The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class marks a mid-cycle refresh of the M-Class SUV, continuing Mercedes-Benz's tradition of luxury SUVs. It's a mid-size SUV available in SUV and Coupe body styles. Key trims include the GLE350, GLE350d (diesel), GLE400, GLE550e (plug-in hybrid), AMG GLE63, and AMG GLE63 S. Pricing ranged from approximately $52,000 to over $100,000 when new. Its blend of luxury, performance, and practicality made it popular.
The Good

The 2016 GLE-Class offers a powerful and refined driving experience, especially in AMG variants. Its luxurious interior and comfortable ride appeal to emotional buyers, while the available diesel engine, spacious cargo area, and Mercedes-Benz reputation provide practical benefits. Reliability is generally good, and the design is both elegant and athletic.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses include the infotainment system, which can be less intuitive than competitors. Some owners have reported issues with the air suspension. The GLE Coupe's sloping roofline compromises rear headroom and cargo space. Repair costs for Mercedes-Benz vehicles can be high, particularly for complex components.

What Problems Does the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class can include issues with the infotainment system, particularly the COMAND interface. Some owners have noted glitches, slow response times, and difficulty with Bluetooth connectivity. Air suspension problems, while not widespread, are a concern for some owners, leading to expensive repairs. Oil leaks are another potential issue, particularly as the vehicle ages.

Recalls for the 2016 GLE-Class have addressed concerns such as fuel leaks due to faulty fuel filter flanges, potentially increasing the risk of a fire. Other recalls have involved issues with the power steering system and the electronic stability program (ESP). It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls before purchase.

Long-term reliability can be affected by the complexity of the vehicle's electronics and systems. Regular maintenance, following the manufacturer's recommended service schedule, is vital to mitigate potential problems. While generally reliable, the GLE-Class, like many luxury vehicles, can be more costly to maintain and repair than non-luxury alternatives. Owners should be aware of the potential for higher repair bills as the vehicle ages.

How long will the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class last?

A 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, with proper maintenance, can realistically provide 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-12 years of service. However, achieving this lifespan depends heavily on diligent maintenance habits, including regular oil changes, fluid checks, and addressing issues promptly. Long-term durability can be compromised by neglect of scheduled maintenance. Weaknesses that may emerge over time include wear and tear on suspension components, increased likelihood of oil leaks, and potential failures of electronic modules. Maintaining meticulous records of service is crucial for maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class boasts a range of tech and safety features. Standard tech includes the COMAND infotainment system with a 7-inch display (upgradable to 8-inch), Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, and mbrace telematics. Entertainment features include a standard audio system with a CD player and USB input; a Harman Kardon or Bang & Olufsen sound system were optional.

Driver-assistance features were plentiful, including standard Collision Prevention Assist Plus (automatic emergency braking), and optional features like blind-spot monitoring, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control (Distronic Plus), and a surround-view camera system. These advanced systems enhance safety and driver confidence.

Safety features include multiple airbags, stability control, and anti-lock brakes. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) are generally good, with the GLE-Class earning top marks in many categories. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) also provides safety ratings, and the GLE-Class typically achieves high scores. It's important to review specific crash-test data for the 2016 model year to assess its overall safety performance. Optional features like parking assist and active blind spot assist further enhanced the vehicle's safety profile.

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class ranged from around $52,000 for the base GLE350 to over $100,000 for the AMG GLE63 S. Current used market prices vary significantly based on mileage, condition, and trim level, typically ranging from $20,000 to $40,000.

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its luxury status and repair costs. Fuel costs vary depending on the engine choice, with the diesel offering better economy. Maintenance and repair costs are also elevated due to the specialized parts and labor required. The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class competes with the BMW X5, Audi Q7, Lexus RX, and Porsche Cayenne. In terms of performance, the GLE's AMG variants are competitive with the Cayenne and X5 M, while the base models offer similar power to the RX and Q7. The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class is ideal for buyers seeking a luxurious and capable SUV with a prestigious badge. It's worth buying if you appreciate Mercedes-Benz's blend of comfort, performance, and style, and are prepared for potentially higher ownership costs. A used GLE can offer excellent value, particularly if well-maintained. The GLE350d is a good choice for those prioritizing fuel efficiency. Thoroughly inspect any used GLE, check for outstanding recalls, and obtain a pre-purchase inspection to minimize potential issues. Consider the AMG variants if performance is a key priority but be aware of increased running costs.

It was an experience

Our 2015 was better than our 2016, the 2016 gave us many years of tire warnings. The ultra thin skylight cover baked us in the Florida sun, we had to use blackout shades it was ridiculous. Other than that it was good. The 2020 though is leaps and bounds over all other GL/GLE 350's we have owned. It's like a space ship, we love it.

I love my GLE

Very smooth ride. Lots of cool safety features. Good power. Good value for my money as I bought this as a CPO. Mercedes Benz financing made it easy to own.

Most reliable brand? Mercedes hands down.

Think of this as the SUV version of the E-class. Ample room, more than enough power to get on the highway (even with a trailer) and manuvers around very well. I have been around MB since I was a kid, 38 years of MB in the family and never a major mechanical issue. From my father, moms, brothers, sisters, and my own, the run strong, safe as a tank and very comfortable. For the money I would not consider any other brand of vehicle whatsoever.

My first Benz!

I love love love this car! This is my very first MB and I cannot tell you how much I am in love with this car. It is the perfect midsize SUV for me and my kids. Plus, the luxury that MB has to offer is unbeatable. Being an SUV is drives really well - it actually feels like your driving a car instead of a big bulky SUV. The drive assist is great. It lets you know when you're driving outside the lane lines which was a little weird at first but now I find it useful. This SUV would seat 5 adults comfortably and a large cargo area for those trips to Costco. Whenever I drive my car I am constantly getting second looks. It's a beautiful car and it handles well. I am so very happy that I decided to go with MBZ GLE versus another midsize SUV.

Best Luxury Car 2016

The best way to pay for lovely moment is to enjoy it. Couldn't have asked for a better SUV. Smooth, solid, easy to drive. If you want to feel like you are in your living room while you are stuck on the freeway, couldn't ask for a better second home.
