The 2014 Subaru BRZ is a sporty, rear-wheel-drive coupe born from a collaboration between Subaru and Toyota. Known for its exceptional handling and affordability, the BRZ quickly became popular among driving enthusiasts. It's only available as a 2-door coupe. Key trims include the base model and the Premium. The original MSRP was around $25,000-$28,000, but used prices vary. Its light weight, responsive steering, and balanced chassis make it a standout.
The Good

The 2014 BRZ offers sharp, engaging performance and balanced handling that appeals to driving enthusiasts. Its sleek design turns heads, while reasonable fuel efficiency makes it practical for daily use. While not luxurious, its relative reliability and affordability make it a smart buy for those seeking fun without breaking the bank.

The Bad

The 2014 Subaru BRZ's weaknesses include its relatively low horsepower, which some drivers find lacking. The rear seats are very small and impractical. Listen for any engine ticking sounds, as some models experienced valve spring issues. Be aware of potential oil consumption problems and check for proper maintenance records.

What Problems Does the 2014 Subaru BRZ Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 Subaru BRZ include engine valve spring failures, particularly in earlier production models. This issue can lead to engine damage and requires costly repairs. Oil consumption is another concern, with some owners reporting excessive oil usage between changes. Check for oil leaks and monitor oil levels regularly.
There have been recalls related to valve springs and potential engine stalling. Always verify if recall work has been completed on any used BRZ you're considering. Other less frequent issues include fuel pump failures and occasional electrical glitches. Long-term reliability can be affected by these issues if not properly addressed. Proper maintenance, including regular oil changes and inspections, is crucial for mitigating these risks. Some owners have also reported issues with the throw-out bearing in the manual transmission. Always get a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic familiar with Subaru Boxer engines before buying a used BRZ.

How long will the 2014 Subaru BRZ last?

With good maintenance, a 2014 Subaru BRZ can reasonably be expected to reach 150,000-200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reaching this milestone. However, diligent maintenance is key. The Boxer engine's design can make some maintenance tasks more complex and potentially expensive. Watch out for potential oil consumption and valve spring issues that can shorten engine life. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt. Regular washing and rustproofing can help extend the body's life. Overall, the BRZ can be a durable car with proper care, but potential engine issues need attention.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Subaru BRZ features a basic infotainment system with a touchscreen display, Bluetooth connectivity, and a USB port. The base model offers limited features beyond that. The Premium trim adds a few more convenience items, but overall tech is basic compared to newer cars.
Driver-assistance features are minimal, limited to standard features like anti-lock brakes, stability control, and traction control. There are no advanced safety systems like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking available on this model year.
Safety features include front and side airbags. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) were generally good. It's important to check the specific ratings for the 2014 model year on their websites for detailed information. Optional features were mostly limited to trim levels, with no major technology upgrades available as standalone options. Its focus is clearly on the driving experience, not cutting-edge technology.

2014 Subaru BRZ Prices and Market Value

The 2014 Subaru BRZ had a starting MSRP of around $25,500. Current used market prices typically range from $12,000 to $20,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The BRZ depreciates at a moderate rate, holding its value relatively well due to its popularity among enthusiasts. Factors affecting resale value include maintenance history, accident-free status, and the presence of desirable options like the Premium trim or a manual transmission. Lower mileage examples command a premium. The overall condition of the vehicle is a significant factor in determining its resale price.

2014 Subaru BRZ Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2014 Subaru BRZ are generally moderate, but can be higher for younger drivers. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the automatic transmission. Maintenance can be average, but potential engine repairs (valve springs, oil consumption) can significantly increase costs. The BRZ isn't the most economical car to own due to potential repairs, but it's not excessively expensive either. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on how well the car has been maintained and driven.

2014 Subaru BRZ Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Subaru BRZ is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Subaru BRZ Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2014 Subaru BRZ competes with cars like the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Scion FR-S (its Toyota twin), and, to some extent, the Nissan 370Z. The Miata offers a similar level of driving fun but as a convertible. The FR-S is essentially the same car as the BRZ. The 370Z has more power but is heavier and less nimble.
In terms of performance, the BRZ excels in handling and balance. Features are basic compared to modern cars. Reliability can be a concern due to potential engine issues. Price-wise, it offers good value for the driving experience.
Alternatives depend on priorities. If you want a convertible, the Miata is a better choice. If you prefer more power, the 370Z might appeal. If you want a similar car but prefer a Toyota badge, the Scion FR-S is nearly identical. A slightly newer model year of the BRZ/FR-S might address some of the early production issues. The BRZ stands out for its focused driving experience at an accessible price point, even with its potential downsides.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Subaru BRZ a Good Sedan?

The 2014 Subaru BRZ is ideal for driving enthusiasts who prioritize handling and rear-wheel-drive fun over outright power or luxury. It's worth buying if you're aware of the potential engine issues and have it thoroughly inspected before purchasing. A well-maintained Premium trim with a manual transmission is generally more desirable. Considering its age, buying used is the only option. Be prepared for basic technology and limited practicality. If you're looking for a pure driving experience on a budget, the 2014 BRZ is a compelling option, but proceed with caution and do your homework.

Lotus looks handling on beer budget

Took a used Brz automatic for a test drive and wow. I've driven heavily modified suspension/engine cars, german cars, fast fords, lexus, nissans but xxxx. The feeling you get from this car is fantastic. Handling and steering are so good from the factory it really makes up a lot for the missing ponies. Really though, it only needs a little more power. Not a turbo or supercharger. That would only blow up the price fast. Aftermarket bolt ons would liven it up. For the price its hard to beat. Sure you can not pick it's slow. Try to find this kind of steering handling outside of Porsche prices. Consider you'll have more fun below the speed limit than most and stay out of jail at the same time. Other than this, you could buy a miata

Best sports car for the money

Although it's not a dragster, it's quick and fun to drive and it's easy to get over 30 mpg. Good for daily driver or just for fun.

Awesome Sports Car !

I have now owned this car for over 2 months. Been driving it to work, and going out at nights with me wife while trying to get the kids to stay home. Im an old man now, 43 yrs of age and this is the first sports car I have ever owned. Apart from driving me sisters 1989 Prelude back in the days. I purchased the 2014 GT Striped BRZ and I love it. It looks sweet, turns heads, and the feel of driving it takes me back to my younger years. I dont go overboard in speeds, as I am more of a mature driver now. This car is not known to beat others in a straight line. You should understand this by now from YouTube videos and forums. However dont underestimate the corners and curves. It can fly through them with ease. Driving it manual as I am, is a dream. It is so fun to flick through gears and to hear the " Rumble " of the boxer engine. I dont have much money to play with modifications, just with stock I am more than greatful to have this car. Have a hectic time at work? Driving this car home takes half of the stress away. Love it, and would buy it again in a heart beat !

Best overall car ever!

It's the best overall car ever for reliability, function and mostly the fun factor. Plus it's great on gas. I've never driven a better overall car.

Most fun car I've driven

Don't look at the 0-60 on this car because that's not what makes this car. What makes this car is how it handles and how fun it is. It really is a car you can do anything in and still have full control while looking good as well. It's still pretty fast but will beat most cars when it comes to handling.

Brz is a drivers dream

This car can handle like no other car for the money. People complain about the power but driving a slow car fast is the best way to drive.
