The 2015 Subaru BRZ is a compact, sporty coupe born from a collaboration between Subaru and Toyota (who sells it as the 86/GT86). It debuted in 2013 and continues as a popular choice for driving enthusiasts. Key trims include Premium and Limited. The original MSRP ranged from approximately $26,000 to $28,000. It stands out due to its rear-wheel-drive configuration, lightweight design, and focus on driving engagement over outright power, making it an affordable and fun sports car.
The Good

The 2015 BRZ offers engaging performance with its balanced chassis and responsive steering, appealing to the emotional driver. Its sleek, sporty design is visually attractive. While not luxurious, it is reasonably comfortable for daily use. Fuel efficiency is decent for a sports car, and its relatively low initial cost makes it a good value for those seeking an affordable, fun-to-drive experience. Reliability is generally good.

The Bad

The 2015 BRZ's main weaknesses include a lack of low-end torque, which can make it feel sluggish at lower RPMs. The rear seats are very small and impractical for adults. Some owners have reported issues with the valve springs in earlier models, so checking the service history is crucial. Road noise can be significant, and the interior is relatively basic.

The 2015 Subaru BRZ prioritized handling and driver engagement over outright power. The horizontally opposed engine contributes to a low center of gravity, enhancing its agility. The Premium trim offers a good starting point, while the Limited adds more comfort and convenience features. While not the fastest car in its class, its balanced performance and accessible price made it a popular choice.

What Problems Does the 2015 Subaru BRZ Have?

The 2015 Subaru BRZ, and other models from similar years (particularly 2013), had some reported issues, primarily concerning valve spring failures. This issue could lead to engine damage if not addressed. While not all cars were affected, it's crucial to check the vehicle's history for any related repairs or recalls. There have been recalls related to the valve springs, and also for potential fuel pump failure. Other reported problems include some instances of excessive oil consumption, though this is less prevalent than the valve spring issue.

Long-term reliability is generally considered good, but regular maintenance is key. Some owners have noted that the direct injection engine can be prone to carbon buildup over time, which can affect performance. Therefore, using high-quality fuel and performing regular maintenance, including carbon cleaning if needed, can help mitigate this risk.

Checking the car's VIN for any outstanding recalls is essential before purchasing. Pre-purchase inspections by a qualified mechanic can also help identify any potential issues before they become major problems. The 2015 model is generally reliable, but these specific issues should be carefully considered.

How long will the 2015 Subaru BRZ last?

With proper maintenance, a 2015 Subaru BRZ can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Given its age, many examples will have surpassed 100,000 miles. Regular oil changes (every 5,000-7,500 miles), timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires), and adherence to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule are crucial for longevity.

Long-term durability depends heavily on how the car was driven. Track use or aggressive driving can accelerate wear and tear. As mentioned previously, carbon buildup on the valves is a potential long-term weakness, and addressing this proactively can extend the engine's life.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 Subaru BRZ features a relatively basic tech package compared to modern vehicles, focusing more on the driving experience. Standard features include a touchscreen infotainment system (6.1-inch), Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, and an eight-speaker audio system. Navigation was available as an option.

Driver-assistance features are limited. It includes standard antilock brakes, stability control, and a suite of airbags. There are no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like automatic emergency braking or lane departure warning available, even as options. This reflects the car's focus on providing a raw, driver-centric experience.

Safety ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) are generally good. The 2015 BRZ received "Good" ratings in most crash tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it a 5-star overall safety rating.

While the tech and safety features are not cutting-edge, they are adequate for a sports car from this era. The emphasis is on the driving experience, and the safety features provide a basic level of protection. For buyers prioritizing advanced technology, this vehicle may fall short compared to newer models.

2015 Subaru BRZ Prices and Market Value

The 2015 Subaru BRZ had a starting MSRP of around $26,000 to $28,000, depending on the trim level. Current used market prices typically range from $12,000 to $20,000, depending on mileage, condition, and location. Depreciation has been moderate, holding its value relatively well compared to some other vehicles.

Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, mileage, service history (especially regarding the valve spring issue), and any modifications. Clean, well-maintained examples with documented service records command higher prices. Low mileage and desirable options (like the Limited trim) also increase value. Cars with modifications may appeal to some buyers but can negatively impact the resale value for others.

2015 Subaru BRZ Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2015 Subaru BRZ can be moderate, generally higher than a standard sedan but lower than more powerful sports cars. Fuel costs are reasonable due to its decent fuel economy. Maintenance is generally straightforward, but addressing potential carbon buildup and valve spring issues can add to the cost. Repairs can be more expensive than average due to the horizontally opposed engine and specialized parts. Overall, the BRZ is moderately economical to own, balancing performance with reasonable running costs.

2015 Subaru BRZ Insurance

Insurance for a 2015 Subaru BRZ is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2015 Subaru BRZ Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2015 Subaru BRZ's key rivals include the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Nissan 370Z, and Scion FR-S (its Toyota twin). The BRZ offers a unique blend of affordability, rear-wheel-drive handling, and sporty styling. The Miata excels in open-top fun and nimbleness but lacks the BRZ's rear seats (however small). The 370Z boasts more power but is heavier and less agile. The FR-S is essentially the same car as the BRZ, so preference comes down to price and availability.

In terms of performance, the BRZ offers balanced handling and a responsive engine, though it lacks low-end torque compared to some competitors. Features are basic but adequate for the price point. Reliability is generally good, but the valve spring issue is a concern. Price-wise, the BRZ is very competitive.

Alternatives to consider include:
  • Mazda MX-5 Miata: For pure driving enjoyment, especially if you prefer a convertible.
  • Nissan 370Z: If you prioritize more power and a more aggressive driving experience.
  • Used BMW 128i/135i: Offers a more premium feel and potentially more performance, but may come with higher maintenance costs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 Subaru BRZ a Good Sedan?

The 2015 Subaru BRZ is ideal for driving enthusiasts seeking an affordable, engaging, and fun-to-drive sports car. It's worth buying, especially on the used market, provided you're aware of its potential weaknesses and have it inspected thoroughly. A well-maintained example with a clean service history, especially one where the valve spring issue has been addressed, is a smart buy. The Limited trim offers some worthwhile upgrades over the base Premium, but both are enjoyable. If you prioritize raw driving feel over luxury or advanced technology, the 2015 BRZ delivers a compelling package.

One of the best cars I’ve owned

I’ve owned multiple sports cars and this is one of the best in terms of value. It’s not the fastest in a straight line but that’s not what it’s designed for. It handles so well in the turns and is still comfortable for doing long road trips. They are super easy to modify and super easy to work on.

Definitely exceeded expectations

Pros: -Handles like a dream, really fun to drive -Quick for a 4-cylinder -Slick looking inside and out -Extremely reliable Cons: -Rear seats only good for car seats or animals -Fairly loud, minimal soundproofing -Not the easiest to get in and out of due to how low the seats are

I’ve never had issues with the BRZ

This car is not only stylish and sophisticated, but it is easy to drive and I feel very safe driving it even though it’s a smaller car. It’s extremely comfortable and has never given me serious issues I can’t fix. I truly love this car.

Amazing Car!

A good friend of mine let me drive his brz and I loved it so much that I had to get my own, just the raw feel of the car makes you enjoy driving it, those moments when you’re able to let loose and enjoy the backroads is amazing, it may lack power but I’m always smiling when driving.

Best value performance car

This car is phenomenal if you are in the market for a RWD lightweight performance oriented car. I shopped around for about 2 years for a car that really appealed to me in this price range and market. It strongly competes with the Honda S2000, ND Miata, and Lotus Exige for the light weight and low center of gravity. But it doesn't sacrifice the creature comforts of a modern street car to afford the curb weight. This BRZ still has comfort access, push button start, bluetooth audio and phone, GPS, heated seats, and a rearview camera. The factory head unit leaves a little to be desired and for sure isn't making Audi or Tesla shake in their boots, but it does what you need it to. And the niche market of people in the market for a BRZ aren't usually going to cry about the head unit while they're pounding some canyon or mountian roads or shaving seconds off their autocross times. It is also a basic double din sized head unit which goes with the theme of the car allowing the owner to customize it easily to match whatever they desire. I personally purchased this car to be a fair weather daily commuter and a occasional autocross and road course car. I am the second owner and purchased the vehicle with an edelbrock supercharger already installed so I never experienced the torque dip of the stock FA20. I have also modified it to meet my goals with larger 17x9 Enkei RPF1 wheels and 255/40/17 tires. I have also installed a full exhaust system including a tomei unequal length header to improve low end torque out of boost. I have driven many other sport cars in this market and can guarantee that not many vehicles will give the driver the confidence to throw the car into corner after corner exterminating apex after apex. The factory seats are bolstered perfectly and will hold you in place while weaving the car back and forth trying to maximize the lateral g force. Ultimately, go buy one and you won't be disappointed. And for the price you will save compared to the competing cars, you will have plenty left over to make it exactly how you want it with more left over to spare.

Bad luck i think

I currently own a 2015 BRZ only owner. At 135 000km my motor let go. God knows why and just out of warranty. Car was always serviced on time never abused. So no logical reasoning for this.

Like a slot car...

Best handling & most dynamic car I've ever owned! Fantastic clutch and gearbox and trouble-free ownership. My first Subaru, but won't be last. Highly recommended if you like to hang the rear out!
