The Good
The 2016 BRZ offers a thrilling driving experience thanks to its balanced chassis and responsive steering. It's relatively reliable and fuel-efficient for a sports car. The sleek design appeals emotionally, while the affordable price and decent gas mileage make it a practical choice. The focus on driver engagement is a major advantage.
The Bad
The 2016 BRZ's main weaknesses include a lack of low-end torque, making it feel underpowered at times. The rear seats are extremely small and impractical. Infotainment can feel dated. Watch for oil consumption issues and potential valve spring recalls. The ride can be stiff for some.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2016 Subaru BRZ Have?
Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the engine. While the BRZ is generally reliable, the high-revving nature of the engine and the potential for oil consumption can impact longevity. Some owners have reported issues with the fuel pump and direct injection system over time. Regular maintenance, including frequent oil changes and inspections, is essential to mitigate these risks.
It is recommended to research any applicable recalls and service bulletins related to the VIN of any potential purchase to ensure all necessary repairs have been performed. Checking owner forums and consulting with mechanics experienced with Subaru BRZ models can also provide valuable insights into potential issues.
How long will the 2016 Subaru BRZ last?
Over time, weaknesses can include increased oil consumption, wear on suspension components (especially if frequently tracked or driven on rough roads), and potential issues with the direct injection system. Regular inspections and preventative maintenance are crucial for maximizing its lifespan.
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features are limited. The BRZ lacks advanced features like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, or automatic emergency braking. Safety features include standard antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a suite of airbags.
Optional features for the 2016 model year were limited. Higher trim levels, like the Limited, offered upgrades such as leather upholstery and heated seats, but significant technology upgrades were not available.
Crash-test ratings: The 2016 Subaru BRZ received good ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It earned a "Good" rating in most crashworthiness tests. However, ratings can vary depending on the specific testing year and criteria. Consult IIHS and NHTSA websites for precise and up-to-date crash-test information. Overall, the BRZ prioritizes a pure driving experience over advanced technology and driver-assistance systems.

How Does the 2016 Subaru BRZ Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?
Compared to the Miata, the BRZ offers a fixed roof and small rear seats, making it slightly more practical. The Miata is often praised for its superior driving feel and top-down experience. Performance is similar, with the Miata feeling slightly more nimble. The Scion FR-S is nearly identical to the BRZ, offering the same driving experience and reliability.
Against the Mustang EcoBoost or 370Z, the BRZ lags in outright power and acceleration. However, it excels in handling and driver engagement. The Mustang and 370Z offer more features and a more powerful engine but are also heavier and less nimble.
Alternatives: If you prioritize pure driving fun and a lightweight feel, the Miata is a strong contender. If you want more power, consider the Mustang EcoBoost or 370Z, but be prepared for a less refined driving experience. The BRZ is a good balance of affordability, handling, and reasonable practicality.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Subaru BRZ a Good Passenger Sedan?
Buying used can be a good option, as the BRZ holds its value reasonably well. Look for well-maintained examples with complete service records, and be sure to check for any outstanding recalls, especially the valve spring recall. The Limited trim offers some desirable upgrades like leather seats, but the Premium trim can be a good value if you're primarily focused on the driving experience.

Beautiful in and out.The color is absolutely unbeatable. Absolutely love how it still has a bit of sound despite the smaller engine. Best purchase I’ve ever made. 10/10 stars

Loving it.For a sports car with only 200 odd horsepower, it handles great, its comfortable, has a great hands free system, and it's amazing on gas. Will definitely be the car I keep for a while.

A great driver's carI would recommend this car to anyone who is looking for an engaging driver's car that is at home on the race track, but is also more practical for daily driving than a Miata. The boxer engine takes some getting used to, and the engine note isn't the best, but for the money, it's one of the purest sports cars out there.
