The 2009 Volvo C70 is a retractable hardtop convertible, offering the security of a coupe and the open-air freedom of a convertible. Part of the second generation (2006-2013), the 2009 C70 came in a single trim level well-equipped with standard features. When new, prices ranged from approximately $39,000 to $45,000. Its standout feature is the three-piece retractable hardtop, offering year-round usability and a more refined experience than traditional soft-top convertibles. It offered Scandinavian design and Volvo's renowned safety features.
The Good

The 2009 Volvo C70 offers a blend of comfort and practicality. Its turbocharged engine provides adequate performance for daily driving. The hardtop convertible design offers both security and open-air enjoyment, appealing to emotional buyers. Volvo's reputation for safety and the C70's comfortable interior make it a sensible choice. While not a sports car, it provides a refined and relaxing driving experience, a strong selling point for value-conscious buyers.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2009 Volvo C70 include potential issues with the complex retractable hardtop mechanism, which can be expensive to repair. Some owners have reported electrical problems and issues with the power windows. The turning radius can feel large. The rear seats are cramped. Prospective buyers should ensure thorough inspection of these components before purchase.

What Problems Does the 2009 Volvo C70 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 Volvo C70 often revolve around the retractable hardtop mechanism. Issues can range from slow operation to complete failure, requiring costly repairs. Electrical problems, particularly with the power windows, door locks, and audio system, are also relatively common. Some owners have reported issues with the climate control system, including problems with the air conditioning compressor and blower motor.

Specific to the 2009 model, there aren't widespread recalls that distinctly plague this year alone. However, it's essential to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any open recalls related to safety issues. General Volvo recalls pertaining to similar models and years might still apply.

Long-term reliability concerns typically involve the lifespan of the turbocharger, potential oil leaks, and wear and tear on suspension components. As the car ages, rubber parts like hoses and seals can deteriorate, leading to leaks and other issues. Regular maintenance and addressing problems promptly can help mitigate these concerns and extend the vehicle's lifespan. A thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended to identify any potential issues.

How long will the 2009 Volvo C70 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Volvo C70 can reasonably provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles of service or more. Years of service depend heavily on driving conditions and maintenance. A well-maintained C70 can last 15 years or longer. Long-term durability relies on addressing potential weaknesses such as the hardtop mechanism and electrical systems. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of worn parts (like belts and hoses), and proactive attention to any warning signs are crucial for maximizing its lifespan. The engine itself is generally robust, but neglecting maintenance can shorten its life.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Volvo C70 came equipped with a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment included a premium sound system with a CD player, auxiliary input, and satellite radio preparation. The car featured dual-zone automatic climate control and cruise control for enhanced comfort.

Driver-assistance features were limited, but Volvo offered the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) as an option, which was a significant safety innovation at the time. Standard safety features were comprehensive, including anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, front airbags, and side airbags.

Optional features included a navigation system and an upgraded Dynaudio premium sound system for audiophiles.

Regarding crash-test ratings, the 2009 Volvo C70 generally performed well in crash tests conducted by the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). It often received good ratings for its overall safety performance, reflecting Volvo's longstanding commitment to safety. Check the IIHS and NHTSA websites for specific ratings for that model year.

2009 Volvo C70 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Volvo C70 had a starting price in the range of $39,000 to $45,000 depending on options. As a used vehicle, prices now range from approximately $6,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The C70 has experienced significant depreciation due to its age and potential maintenance costs associated with its complex hardtop system. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, maintenance history, mileage, and the presence of desirable options like the Dynaudio sound system or BLIS. Convertibles, in general, tend to be seasonal sellers, impacting their value based on the time of year.

2009 Volvo C70 Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Volvo C70 can be moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are typically average for a convertible in its class. Fuel costs are reasonable, given its turbocharged engine, but premium fuel is recommended. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average, particularly if the retractable hardtop or electrical systems require attention. Long-term ownership costs are heavily influenced by the car's maintenance history. Regular maintenance can keep costs manageable, but neglecting repairs can lead to expensive problems.

2009 Volvo C70 Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Volvo C70 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Volvo C70 Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2009 Volvo C70 competes with other hardtop convertibles like the BMW 3 Series Convertible (E93) and the Volkswagen Eos. In terms of performance, the BMW generally offers a more engaging driving experience. Feature-wise, the C70 is well-equipped, but the BMW offered more advanced technology options at the time. Reliability is a mixed bag; the C70's hardtop mechanism can be a concern, while BMWs can also have their share of issues. The VW Eos is typically more affordable but less luxurious.

Regarding price, the C70 often falls in between the Eos and the BMW in the used market. If performance is a priority, the BMW 3 Series Convertible is a better choice. If budget is a major concern and you want a similar hardtop convertible experience, the VW Eos is worth considering. However, if you value Scandinavian design, safety features, and a comfortable ride, the Volvo C70 remains a compelling option, especially if you can find one with a well-documented maintenance history. Similar alternatives to consider include the Lexus IS 250C for reliability or the Audi A4 Cabriolet for a blend of luxury and performance.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Volvo C70 a Good Sedan?

The 2009 Volvo C70 is ideal for buyers seeking a stylish and comfortable hardtop convertible with a focus on safety and a touch of Scandinavian flair. It's a good choice for those who prioritize a refined driving experience over outright performance. Whether it's worth buying depends on the condition of the specific vehicle and its maintenance history. A thorough inspection is crucial. Purchasing a used C70 is the only option, and it's best to look for one with a well-documented service record and no signs of hardtop or electrical problems. If found in good condition, it can be a worthwhile purchase, offering a unique blend of style and practicality. Otherwise, a comparable convertible from Lexus or BMW might offer better long-term reliability.

C70 Gremlin

MY 09 c70 has an electrical issue no one can figure out. Love the car. Bought it used in 2016. Garage kept so it looks very new. 150K on the odometer. Dealers would not work on it. Found an ex Volvo dealer mechanic that does excellent work (Wade at Starr Cars) and is a Volvo specialist. THIS car has an electrical gremlin. Plane and simple. Other than that. Love the car.

Perfect replacement for an older Porsche

We bought this car in 2019 after selling our Porsche 944. It is a wonderful car to drive and we've used it on all of our long trips where its just my wife and I driving (we have a 7 passenger car when we take the kids places). Upgrading from the Porsche it's nice to have automatic transmission and cruise control and the car is about as low. Understand that luggage space is limited with the top down so while you can take trips with 3 or 4 people, cargo space is limited if you want to be able to put the top down. Satellite radio is great however the tuner is older so you can't get newer stations like "Road Trip Radio" or anything in the 300's, but its still great not to have to look for a new radio station every 15-20 minutes when driving out in South Dakota or Wyoming and there are plenty of classic rock stations. I purchased a Volvo wind-screen that covers the rear seats and that cuts out the back flow considerably (on the tollway, my wife's long hair would be blowing almost straight forward with the top down over 50mph without the screen but with it, there is little back flow if any). Its a great little fun car and gets good mileage too. I replaced all tires with Pilot 4's. Cigarette lighter is flat facing up so you'll want to cover it because things can fall into it if you don't have a cover on it (been there done that) but makes a great place for a 2 USB plugin charger to keep your phones charged. Overall its a really nice car, and has required little service in the 3 years we purchased it except for oil changes (and replacing tires). We just turned 50k miles on it.

How much do I love this car???

The answer: Enough to have owned three--yes THREE--since 2006! All celestial blue, all with the oyster leather interior. The first car I had to return after the lease was up. I bought a used '08 in '15. It was totaled in an accident a few weeks ago, and thus began the hunt for round 3! My insurance company gave me more than I needed to buy a used '09 and I am THRILLED to once again be behind the wheel of this BEAUTY! I entertained other used convertibles, but I'm an Aquarian, we are unorthodox and don't always "conform" to the norms. In the Bay Area where everyone is either driving a BMW, Tesla or Honda, I like to stand out, and this car, in this color, allows me to do just that! Even though my girl is 10 years old, she's in exceptional condition and I'm a very VERY happy Volvo driver.

It's a great car.

This car, which was purchased as a second car, made me change a 17 years relationship with another make and switch to an XC60 as a primary car, which is also excellent. And the dealership, Weston Volvo, is also excellent, not only at sales people, but mainly service.

This cars rides and drives very good. I purchased for my wife and she loves it. She loves the layout of all the controls, and how the car handles and most of all, she wanted a hardtop convertible. 🙂

One fun, cool, fast, sexy convertible!

I love driving this Volvo convertible. It is great looking, fast, and the interior is quieter than convertibles with soft tops because it is a hard top. For a convertible, it has decent cargo storage.

My first convertible car

I was not thinking Volvo convertible at all until i see this car. We were looking for 4 seater with enough rear legroom. I think Volvo C70 has more legroom than others. It doesnt have a real sport car look but so far i liked the design and safety reputation of Volvo
