2005 Toyota Sienna Review: A Little More Comfortable Than the Honda Odyssey, and a Little More Expensive

Rating: 4.50
Based on 67 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2005 Toyota Sienna is a minivan, part of the Sienna's second generation (2004-2010). It offers practicality and reliability. Key trims included CE, LE, XLE, and XLE Limited. The Sienna was popular for its spacious interior, smooth ride, and available all-wheel drive, setting it apart from many competitors. New, the price range was roughly $23,000 to $35,000, depending on trim and options.
The Good

The 2005 Toyota Sienna excels in reliability and comfort, appealing to practical buyers. Its smooth ride and spacious interior are emotionally satisfying for families. Performance is adequate, and the Sienna holds its value well. While not the most stylish, its design is functional and family-friendly, contributing to its overall value proposition.

The Bad

The 2005 Toyota Sienna's weaknesses include potential oil consumption issues in higher mileage models. Watch out for sliding door problems, which are a common complaint. Rust can be a concern in northern climates. The automatic transmission should be checked for smooth shifting, as some owners have reported issues over time.

What Problems Does the 2005 Toyota Sienna Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2005 Toyota Sienna include issues with the power sliding doors, which can become stuck or malfunction. Oil consumption can be a problem as the engine ages and mileage increases, requiring more frequent top-offs between oil changes. Some owners have also reported issues with the automatic transmission, such as rough shifting or hesitation, particularly at higher mileages.
Recalls for the 2005 Sienna have included issues with the spare tire carrier potentially corroding and failing, and in some cases, problems with the power windows. These recalls should have been addressed by dealerships, but it's important to check the vehicle's history.
Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the durability of the suspension components, particularly in areas with harsh road conditions. Rust can also be a significant factor in areas with heavy salt usage during winter. Checking the undercarriage for excessive rust is crucial. Overall, while the Sienna is generally reliable, these potential issues should be inspected before purchasing a used model.

How long will the 2005 Toyota Sienna last?

With proper maintenance, a 2005 Toyota Sienna can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report getting 15-20 years of service from their Siennas. Regular oil changes (every 5,000-7,500 miles), transmission fluid changes (every 60,000 miles), and timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires are crucial.
Long-term durability hinges on preventing rust and addressing issues like oil consumption early on. Weaknesses can include the power sliding doors and potential transmission problems as mileage accumulates. However, with diligent care, the Sienna can offer years of reliable family transportation.

Great family car with room for seven, plenty of storage, rides smooth, comfortable seats, good on gas, seats tumble for large item hauling, nice sound system.

I bought the Sienna when it was brand new. It currently has 214000 miles on it and I just love it. Has been a great vehicle and I hope to keep driving it for as long as I am alive.
Negative Owner Reviews

We bought an 2005 XLE limited new. Just traded it in and I am so glad its gone. It was the most expensive car to maintain I have ever owned (even compared to MBenz). We put 6 sets (12 tires) of tire on it (run flats suck), two door motors, several belts, and a host of other money dumped into it. We took it to a mechanic that said dump it as radiator had issues as well as trnasmison. It was a great car by design, support comfortable, just was no good mechanically.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2005 Toyota Sienna's built-in tech was relatively basic for its time. Standard features included a CD player and air conditioning. Higher trims offered upgrades like a JBL premium sound system and a DVD entertainment system with a screen for rear passengers.
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. It included antilock brakes (ABS) and traction control, but features like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning were not available.
Safety features included front airbags, side airbags (optional on some trims), and anti-lock brakes. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) was also available as an option, enhancing safety in slippery conditions.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally showed good performance for the 2005 Sienna. It typically received 4 or 5 stars in frontal and side impact tests, providing a reasonable level of occupant protection for its era.
Optional features varied depending on the trim level and could include things like a sunroof, power sliding doors and liftgate, and upgraded audio systems. Keep in mind that technology has advanced significantly since 2005, so don't expect cutting-edge features in this vehicle.

2005 Toyota Sienna Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2005 Toyota Sienna ranged from approximately $23,000 for the base CE model to around $35,000 for a fully loaded XLE Limited. Current used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level.
The Sienna depreciated significantly over the years, but its reputation for reliability helps it retain some value. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, maintenance history, overall condition (interior and exterior), and the presence of desirable options like the DVD entertainment system or all-wheel drive. Low mileage examples in excellent condition command a premium.

2005 Toyota Sienna Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2005 Toyota Sienna are generally moderate, as it's a family-oriented vehicle. Fuel costs are average for a minivan of its era. Maintenance is relatively affordable due to Toyota's reputation for reliability and readily available parts. However, potential repairs (like sliding door or transmission issues) can be costly.
Overall, the 2005 Sienna is moderately economical to own, but proactive maintenance is key to preventing expensive repairs and ensuring long-term reliability.

2005 Toyota Sienna Insurance

Insurance for a 2005 Toyota Sienna is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Van with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2005 Toyota Sienna Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Van?

The 2005 Toyota Sienna competed with minivans like the Honda Odyssey, Chrysler Town & Country, and Dodge Caravan. In terms of reliability, the Sienna and Odyssey were generally considered top contenders, often surpassing the Chrysler products. The Sienna's available all-wheel drive was a unique selling point.
Performance-wise, the Sienna was competitive, although some rivals offered slightly more powerful engines. Features were comparable across the class, with higher trims offering similar amenities like DVD entertainment and leather upholstery. Price-wise, the Sienna was generally in line with its competitors.
A 2005 Honda Odyssey would be a similar alternative, offering comparable reliability and features. The Chrysler Town & Country, while offering innovative features like Stow 'n Go seating, generally lagged behind in reliability.
If reliability is the top priority, the Sienna or Odyssey are strong choices. If innovative features are more important, the Chrysler products might be considered, but with the understanding that reliability might be a trade-off.

Final Verdict: Is the 2005 Toyota Sienna a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Van?

The 2005 Toyota Sienna is ideal for families seeking a reliable and spacious minivan on a budget. It's worth buying as a used vehicle if it has been well-maintained and has a clean history.
Specific trims like the XLE offer a good balance of features and value. Before purchasing, thoroughly inspect for rust, sliding door issues, and potential oil consumption. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended. If you prioritize reliability and practicality over the latest technology, a well-maintained 2005 Sienna can be a smart choice.

313,000 miles and Counting! Fantastic Van!

This van is amazing. It was gifted to me by my grandparents with 290,000 miles on the engine. As of right now it currently has 314,000 miles. I am absolutely amazed by the integrity of this vehicle and how well it has held together over the years. Yes there are small cosmetic issues, as you would expect with a car that’s 18 years old. We chose to replace the coolant system around 300,000 miles. Minor set back, but it has run even better since then. The DVD player no longer works, but all the speakers are in fanatic condition, seats as well for the years of love, soccer games, and countless trips. This van has transported not 1 but 5 generations of family members over the years. We may look into a transmission swap- but I am honestly interested in finding out just how far this one will go. I definitely will only be purchasing siennas from here on out, as this one has proven that with proper maintenance, they will continue to thrive well after 300,000 miles.

They got this one right

I have driven this vehicle for 16 years and made 15 round trips to Miami Beach Florida From Chicago Illinois (snow bird) along with moderate daily driving. Performing basic maintenance mostly through a Toyota dealer. Relatively low mileage of 82,000 miles with only one minor incident. Before that I’ve driven dodge caravan unreliably. This is a fantastic vehicle. We liked it so much we bought a 2020 model and continue to drive the 2005. In many ways I prefer the 2005 or the newer version. Of course time will tell how the 2005 holds up.

Most Reliable Car I've Owned!

This car has been the most reliable for me and my family. It was ideal to have for 2 young children for day trips, vacations, and whenever we need to transport lots of items to a party or event. I got 25 mpg on this car! I also used this to transport other people for money and it more than paid for itself!

Toyota Sienna is excellent family vehicle

Great family car with room for seven, plenty of storage, rides smooth, comfortable seats, good on gas, seats tumble for large item hauling, nice sound system.

2005 Toyota Sienna Limited

I bought the Sienna when it was brand new. It currently has 214000 miles on it and I just love it. Has been a great vehicle and I hope to keep driving it for as long as I am alive.

Very versatile minvan, 7 passenger

Comfortable for long trips, useful for various hauling jobs with seating configurations, very reliable with all major systems working well after 15 years and 135000 miles.
