2019 Jeep Wrangler Review: Fun Off-Roader That Holds Up Well Over Time

Rating: 4.76
Based on 52 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2019 Jeep Wrangler, part of the JL generation launched in 2018, continues Jeep's iconic off-road legacy. Available as a two-door or four-door (Unlimited) convertible SUV, it offers several trims including Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon. Its removable top and doors, combined with impressive off-road capabilities, make it exceptionally popular. The approximate pricing range when new was $28,000 to $48,000, depending on the trim and options.
The Good

The 2019 Jeep Wrangler boasts exceptional off-road performance and a distinctive, iconic design that appeals to adventurous buyers. Its powerful engine options provide adequate performance. Practically, it offers good resale value and a robust build. However, comfort and efficiency are not its strongest points compared to other SUVs.

The Bad

The 2019 Jeep Wrangler's weaknesses include its compromised on-road handling, wind noise at higher speeds, and relatively poor fuel economy. Watch out for electrical issues, particularly with the infotainment system and power windows. Some owners have reported issues with the "death wobble" at higher speeds, necessitating careful inspection of the suspension and steering components.

What Problems Does the 2019 Jeep Wrangler Have?

Frequently reported problems with the 2019 Jeep Wrangler include electrical issues, particularly related to the Uconnect infotainment system, power windows, and the auxiliary start/stop system. Some owners have also experienced issues with the automatic transmission, reporting rough shifting or hesitation. The "death wobble," a violent shaking of the front end at higher speeds, has been reported by some owners and is often linked to steering or suspension components.
Recalls for the 2019 Jeep Wrangler have included issues related to the rearview camera malfunctioning and potential problems with the welds on the front track bar bracket which can lead to steering issues.
Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the electrical system and the potential for corrosion, particularly in regions with harsh winters and salted roads. The soft top, while a desirable feature, can be prone to wear and tear over time, requiring replacement. Oil consumption issues have been reported by some owners of the 3.6L V6 engine. Regularly checking and maintaining fluid levels, especially engine oil, is crucial for long-term reliability.

How long will the 2019 Jeep Wrangler last?

With regular maintenance, a 2019 Jeep Wrangler can reasonably be expected to reach 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Key to longevity is adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule, including regular oil changes, fluid checks, and inspections of suspension and steering components. Long-term durability can be affected by off-road use; excessive or aggressive off-roading can accelerate wear and tear. The electrical system and the soft top are potential weaknesses over time, requiring proactive care and occasional replacement.

Negative Owner Reviews
Bcollie
After a very short ownership experience of a new Jeep Wrangler, I could not wait to trade to a safer and better riding vehicle. This new JL was the 4th Jeep I have owned and the most disappointing. The steering at highway speeds can be down right dangerous. I should have considered the consumer reviews that expressed concern with the steering and handling of the new JL. they turned out the be correct and accurate.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2019 Jeep Wrangler offers a range of built-in tech and safety features. The Uconnect infotainment system is available with screen sizes ranging from 5 to 8.4 inches, offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Entertainment features include available premium audio systems.
Driver-assistance features are somewhat limited compared to other SUVs, with available options including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, and park assist. Adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning were optional.
Standard safety features include stability control, traction control, and multiple airbags. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave the 2019 Wrangler Marginal ratings for driver-side small overlap front crash test and Acceptable for side crash test; Headlights were rated Poor. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it a 4-star overall safety rating. The removable doors and roof impact the Wrangler’s crash test performance, contributing to its lower scores compared to other SUVs.

2019 Jeep Wrangler Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2019 Jeep Wrangler ranged from approximately $28,000 for a base Sport model to around $48,000 or more for a fully loaded Rubicon. Used market prices currently range from approximately $25,000 to $40,000 depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Wranglers hold their value well due to their iconic status and strong demand. Factors affecting resale value include the trim level (Rubicons command a premium), overall condition, mileage, and any aftermarket modifications. Lower mileage and a clean Carfax report will significantly increase resale value.

2019 Jeep Wrangler Cost of Ownership

The 2019 Jeep Wrangler is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance costs can be higher due to the vehicle's off-road capabilities and potential for damage. Fuel economy is relatively poor compared to other SUVs. Maintenance costs are average, but repairs can be expensive, especially for specialized components like the four-wheel-drive system. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance habits and driving style. Neglecting maintenance can lead to significant repair bills. Expect higher than average running costs.

2019 Jeep Wrangler Insurance

Insurance for a 2019 Jeep Wrangler is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon Open with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2019 Jeep Wrangler Compare to Other Wagon Open?

The 2019 Jeep Wrangler's key rivals include the Toyota 4Runner and, to a lesser extent, mid-size trucks like the Toyota Tacoma and Chevrolet Colorado. In terms of off-road performance, the Wrangler and 4Runner are closely matched, but the Wrangler offers more open-air driving experience with its removable top and doors. The 4Runner generally has better reliability ratings.
Features-wise, the Wrangler lags behind some competitors in terms of advanced driver-assistance systems. The Tacoma and Colorado offer more practicality for hauling cargo, while the Wrangler excels in passenger comfort (especially the Unlimited model). Price-wise, the Wrangler is competitive, but used prices can be inflated due to high demand.
Alternatives: If off-road capability is paramount, the Toyota 4Runner is a strong contender with better predicted reliability. For daily driving comfort and practicality, a mid-size truck might be a better choice. If serious off-roading isn't a priority, a more comfortable and fuel-efficient SUV would be a more practical option. The Land Rover Defender offers a similar blend of off-road capability and rugged style, but at a higher price point.

Final Verdict: Is the 2019 Jeep Wrangler a Good Wagon Open?

The 2019 Jeep Wrangler is ideal for buyers who prioritize off-road capability, iconic styling, and the open-air driving experience. It's worth buying if you understand its compromises in on-road handling, fuel economy, and cabin noise. A used model can be a good value, especially if well-maintained and with lower mileage. The Rubicon trim is best for serious off-roaders, while the Sahara offers a more comfortable daily driving experience. Consider a thorough inspection before purchasing, paying close attention to the electrical system and suspension components.

This cars have too many problems.

This cars have too many problems. The forums tell the story, and they just count it as "it's a jeep" Corrosion problems all over the place, specially around the hinges. After 36k miles, I had the engine rockers start knocking, it turns out this is typical. The jeep wobble of death is real. Radio would turn off randomly, then after a few minutes would come on again. Roof leaks between panels. The worst part is that none of the problems I encountered were isolated issues, they are very typical for those cars.

Love driving the new Rubicon.

You either get it or you don't… That's what you hear from most Jeep Wrangler owners. This is the second addition to our Jeep fleet. No, they are not the most comfortable, if that's what you are looking for this vehicle is not for you. If you're looking for great gas mileage, again this vehicle is not for you. However, if you are looking for a fun go anywhere vehicle then the wrangler is for you! Take it out on the trail, out on the beach, or just around town, the Jeep Wrangler is a great vehicle to make memories in.

Keeps are so much fun!

This is my third Jeep and I love it. I like it because it is easy to drive and park. Runs great. The back seat folds completely so you get a large cargo area.My only issue is the channel to clear water from roof is not long enough and after rain, when you open up the door, rain water gets inside.

What can say? It's a Jeep!

While it still displays all of the iconic style identifiers of the classic Wrangler (going back to the 1941 Willys), the new JL is a very refined improvement over the JK in 100 small but significant ways. The styling is richer looking and slightly more aerodynamic. The interior is vastly improved, from the completely redesigned dash, to the lighter, easier to remove roof panels. It is quieter, smoother and more comfortable than previous Wranglers. With 3 USB ports, 2 12V outlets, standard hi-def backup camera, bluetooth and multiple electronic display information functions, the Wrangler finally enters the 21st century. The Sport model can still be very basic, and options such as the better radio, auto air and power windows are essential. You can add things like running boards and a gas cap cover door make it look more finished (I did). The steering is not as tight as I'd like, and there's still some wind noise, but this ain't a BMW. One distinguishing feature of the Wrangler is that it's built to be easily modified and upgraded. And you can take off the tops and the doors! Of course, no other off-road capable vehicle even comes close. All in all, this is a crazy fun vehicle to drive with a very cool look. Just don't ever call it a car.
