Rating: 4.63
Based on 73 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2014 Jeep Wrangler continues a legacy of off-road prowess dating back to World War II. This iconic vehicle is offered in a 2-door or 4-door (Unlimited) body style. The 2014 model year is part of the JK generation, produced from 2007-2018. Key trims include Sport, Sahara, and Rubicon. Pricing ranged from approximately $23,000 to $35,000 when new. Its rugged capabilities, open-air driving experience, and extensive aftermarket support make it incredibly popular.
The Good

The 2014 Jeep Wrangler boasts exceptional off-road performance, a classic and customizable design, and strong resale value. For the practical buyer, it's durable and capable. Emotionally, it represents freedom and adventure with its removable top and doors. While not the most efficient, its ruggedness appeals to enthusiasts.

The Bad

The 2014 Jeep Wrangler's weaknesses include subpar fuel economy, a less-than-refined ride quality, and significant road noise, especially with the soft top. Be mindful of potential rust issues, particularly in areas with road salt. Check for leaks around the hardtop or soft top and ensure proper operation of the 4WD system.

What Problems Does the 2014 Jeep Wrangler Have?

The 2014 Jeep Wrangler has some commonly reported issues. One prevalent concern is the potential for the 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine to experience cylinder head problems, leading to misfires. This issue was more common in earlier model years of the JK generation but still possible in the 2014. Other potential problems include issues with the cooling system, such as radiator leaks or thermostat failures. Some owners have reported problems with the automatic transmission, experiencing rough shifting or hesitation.
There have been recalls for the 2014 Wrangler, including issues related to airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, and fuel tank leaks in certain models. Always check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around rust, especially in regions with harsh winters and salted roads. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and inspections, is crucial to mitigate these potential problems. Check for leaks around the Freedom Top panels if equipped with a hardtop.

How long will the 2014 Jeep Wrangler last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 Jeep Wrangler can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this milestone with regular servicing. The longevity depends heavily on driving habits and adherence to the maintenance schedule. Long-term durability can be affected by rust, particularly on the frame and body. The Pentastar V6 is generally reliable but monitor for potential cylinder head issues. The drivetrain is robust, but regular fluid changes are essential. Jeeps maintained well tend to hold their value and provide many years of service.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Jeep Wrangler features a fairly basic tech setup compared to modern vehicles. Standard entertainment includes an AM/FM radio with a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims offer a Uconnect infotainment system with a touchscreen display, navigation, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Bluetooth connectivity is available as an option.
Driver-assistance features are minimal, primarily limited to standard anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control. There are no advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking.
Safety features include front airbags and side airbags (optional). Crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA are mixed. The 2014 Wrangler received marginal scores in some IIHS crash tests. NHTSA gave it a 3-star overall safety rating. Optional features include remote keyless entry, power windows and locks (standard on some trims), and air conditioning. The focus is more on off-road capability than advanced technology.

2014 Jeep Wrangler Prices and Market Value

The 2014 Jeep Wrangler had a starting MSRP around $23,000 and could reach $35,000+ for a fully equipped Rubicon Unlimited. Current used market prices range from approximately $18,000 to $30,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Wranglers hold their value exceptionally well due to their popularity and reputation for off-road capability. Factors affecting resale value include low mileage, a clean title, minimal modifications (or tasteful, well-executed ones), and the Rubicon trim, which commands a premium. Limited edition models also tend to retain higher value.

2014 Jeep Wrangler Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Jeep Wrangler is generally not the most economical vehicle to own. Insurance costs can be moderate. Fuel economy is subpar, contributing to higher running costs. Maintenance is relatively straightforward, but repairs can be expensive, especially for off-road-related damage. Long-term ownership costs are moderate to high, influenced by fuel consumption, potential repairs, and the cost of aftermarket modifications, which many owners pursue. Rust prevention is crucial for minimizing long-term repair expenses.

2014 Jeep Wrangler Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Jeep Wrangler is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Jeep Wrangler Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2014 Jeep Wrangler's key rivals are limited due to its unique focus on off-road capability and open-air driving. Vehicles like the Toyota 4Runner offer better on-road comfort and reliability but lack the Wrangler's removable top and doors. The Nissan Xterra (discontinued) was a more rugged competitor but is no longer in production. In terms of pure off-road performance, the Wrangler often surpasses its rivals, especially in Rubicon trim. However, competitors like the Land Rover Discovery (of similar vintage) offer more luxurious interiors and advanced technology, albeit at a higher price point and with potentially lower reliability.
For those prioritizing on-road comfort and fuel economy, the Toyota 4Runner or a used Jeep Grand Cherokee might be better alternatives. If extreme off-road capability isn't a primary concern, a more modern SUV with better safety features and technology could be a preferable choice. The Wrangler excels in its niche, but its compromises in comfort and efficiency should be considered.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Jeep Wrangler a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2014 Jeep Wrangler is ideal for off-road enthusiasts and those seeking a unique, open-air driving experience. It's worth buying if you prioritize off-road capability and are willing to accept compromises in on-road comfort and fuel economy. Buying used is often a good option, as Wranglers hold their value well. The Rubicon trim is recommended for serious off-roading, while the Sport or Sahara trims offer a more balanced approach for daily driving. Thoroughly inspect any used Wrangler for rust and signs of off-road abuse before purchasing.

Nice to own but xxxx to work on

I have already rebuilt the top half of the engine apparently there is an issue with lifters and rocker arms. $4200 in parts and labor. emission issues O2 sensors, purge pump for fuel replaced. It only has 85,000 miles on it and has never been in the mud!!! Parts and accessories are easy to find. I would recommend it as a weekend ride not everyday ride. I like it but its my last one.

Bucket list vehicle! ✔️✔️

First it took some getting used to since we are not frequent drivers of stick shift… But now everything is wonderful! Well with the sturdiness and how solid it is on the road. Interior is rustic just like we wanted, soft top… Great for the Florida sunshine!

My wife wanted a Jeep, she now has a Jeep. She is enjoying the experience, after only driving high end sedans, SUV's and sports cars.

Loving it

I have wanted a Jeep since I was 19 and finally got my first one. Soft top wrangler jk sport. First day the weather hit 55 I had the top down and I am loving it. The ride is pretty smooth and inside very comfortable. The noise is of course a little louder than my older car but I had expected that. Over-all so glad I found this Jeep.

Jeep has vastly improved from 2005-2020

I test drove a Jeep Wrangler in 2005 that handled like an underpowered school bus blown around like a sailboat on the highway. The 2014 Williys version I test drove I bought. The 6 cylinder engine produces 90 MPH power at will, the model holds the lane as well as any SUV, and I still have the full 4x4 capability superior to most other SUV
