2007 Jeep Wrangler Review: Unreliable, Uncomfortable, Impractical, and Awesome at Off-Roading

Rating: 4.21
Based on 97 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2007 Jeep Wrangler marked the start of the JK generation, a significant redesign. Available in two-door and the newly introduced four-door (Unlimited) body styles, it ran from 2007 to 2018. Key trims included the base X, Sahara, and the off-road-focused Rubicon. The 2007 model year typically had an original MSRP range of $19,000 to $30,000, depending on the trim and options. Its iconic design and unparalleled off-road capability made it, and continues to make it, incredibly popular.
The Good

The 2007 Jeep Wrangler offers strong off-road performance and a distinctive, iconic design appealing to emotional buyers seeking adventure. Practically, it boasts reasonable reliability and holds its value well. While comfort and efficiency aren't its strengths, its unmatched capability and open-air experience are major draws.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2007 Jeep Wrangler include a somewhat rough ride, especially on-road, and limited fuel economy. Watch out for potential rust issues, particularly underneath. The soft top can be noisy at highway speeds. Also, the initial run of the JK series had some electrical gremlins, so test all features thoroughly.

What Problems Does the 2007 Jeep Wrangler Have?

The 2007 Jeep Wrangler, being the first year of the JK generation, had some frequently reported problems. The 3.8L V6 engine has been known for oil leaks and sometimes excessive oil consumption. Some owners have reported issues with the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module), which can cause a variety of electrical problems. Rust can be a concern, especially in areas with road salt, so inspecting the frame and undercarriage is crucial.

Recalls for the 2007 Wrangler have addressed issues such as potential fuel leaks and problems with the airbag system. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the longevity of the engine and transmission, with proper maintenance being essential to maximizing their lifespan. The soft top can also be prone to wear and tear, requiring replacement over time. The manual transmission may also have issues, check for smooth shifting. Some owners also report "death wobble", which is a dangerous vibration at highway speeds that needs immediate professional attention. Regular maintenance and careful inspection are key to mitigating these potential issues.

How long will the 2007 Jeep Wrangler last?

A well-maintained 2007 Jeep Wrangler can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 15+ years of service with regular maintenance. Key to long-term durability is consistent oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and addressing rust promptly. Weaknesses over time include potential engine issues (oil leaks/consumption), electrical glitches related to the TIPM, and wear and tear on suspension components, especially if frequently used off-road. Frame rust is the biggest threat, so regular undercarriage cleaning and rust prevention are critical.

Negative Owner Reviews
carlover86
better half traded a buick for this JK. right off the bat the radiator died, dealer said it was fine and flushed it. 2 weeks later it over heated. thanks to the extended warranty, they replaced the radiator, thermostat, and all the corresponding hoses. now thats fine. the turn signal switch has a short and is making the dash lights randomly get bright and dim when used. the radio cuts out now and then (xm and fm) now the rear end has chips missing from the gears in the differential... mind you we have never taken it off road...yet... it has just under 100k miles.
Concerned
Vehicle seems great, when asked about a deposit to hold the vehicle they said their policy is 10% non refundable. This would have been sight unseen!!
Gunny
Love the concept BUT with only 63,000 mile and excellent care Complete front end rebulid -Death Wobble Oil leaks - gaskets, intake etc Trans line leaks Poor oil consumption Bad rear brakes -3 times Maybe with 163K this is OK but not in a modern car at 63

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Jeep Wrangler's built-in tech and entertainment were relatively basic by today's standards. Standard features included a basic AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered options like a premium sound system with a subwoofer. Navigation was not commonly available as a built-in option in 2007 models.

Driver-assistance features were virtually non-existent; these Wranglers relied on the driver's skill and awareness. Safety features included standard front airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS). Electronic Stability Control (ESC) was available as an option.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for the 2007 Wrangler are mixed. It received 3 stars for frontal driver-side crash protection and 4 stars for frontal passenger-side crash protection. Rollover ratings were also a concern. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings were also not particularly high. It's important to remember that the Wrangler's design prioritizes off-road capability over on-road safety compared to other SUVs. Optional features included things like remote keyless entry and power windows and locks, but overall, the focus was on simplicity and ruggedness.

What Colors Options are Available?

2007 Jeep Wrangler Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 Jeep Wrangler ranged from approximately $19,000 to $30,000 depending on the trim and options. Currently, used market prices vary greatly based on condition, mileage, and modifications, but typically range from $8,000 to $18,000. Wranglers hold their value exceptionally well due to their enduring popularity and off-road capabilities. Low mileage, clean condition, and desirable options (like the Rubicon trim or aftermarket modifications) positively impact resale value. High mileage, rust, or significant damage negatively impact it.

2007 Jeep Wrangler Cost of Ownership

The 2007 Jeep Wrangler is generally not considered economical to own. Insurance costs can be moderate but vary depending on the driver's record and location. Fuel economy is poor. Maintenance can be moderate if kept stock; modifications increase costs. Repairs can be more frequent and sometimes pricier due to the Wrangler's off-road nature. Long-term ownership costs are higher than average due to fuel consumption, potential repairs, and the need for specialized maintenance.

2007 Jeep Wrangler Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Jeep Wrangler is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Jeep Wrangler Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2007 Jeep Wrangler's key rivals include SUVs like the Toyota FJ Cruiser (later years) and, to a lesser extent, other mid-size SUVs like the Nissan Xterra. In terms of off-road performance, the Wrangler Rubicon surpasses most rivals with its superior hardware. However, on-road performance and comfort are where the Wrangler falls short compared to more traditional SUVs. The FJ Cruiser offers comparable off-road capability but a more refined on-road experience.

Features are generally basic in the Wrangler, especially in lower trims. Rivals often offered more tech and convenience features for a similar price. Reliability is comparable to the FJ Cruiser but potentially less than some other SUVs. Price-wise, the Wrangler holds its value well, making used examples potentially more expensive than competitors of the same age.

Alternatives depend on priorities. If off-road capability is paramount, a used Toyota FJ Cruiser is a strong contender. If on-road comfort and features are more important, consider other mid-size SUVs, acknowledging a trade-off in off-road prowess. For pure off-road performance, the Wrangler is hard to beat, but buyers should be aware of the compromises.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Jeep Wrangler a Good Wagon?

The 2007 Jeep Wrangler is ideal for off-road enthusiasts and those seeking an iconic, open-air driving experience. It's worth buying *if* off-road capability and a unique driving experience outweigh on-road comfort and fuel economy concerns. A used 2007 Wrangler can be a good value, but a thorough inspection for rust and maintenance history is crucial. The Rubicon trim is recommended for serious off-roaders. If primary use is commuting and on-road driving, consider alternatives. Budget-conscious buyers should be aware of the potential for higher long-term ownership costs.

Great for highway or offroading.

This Jeep has many bells and whistles, and the Jeep looks newer than the year. It has a good towing package. The tires are good, and the full-sized spare is a Goodyear Wrangler.

This has been a great vehicle for our family. My middle son drove it and took it to college. Very reliable. He added lots of after market things to it and he's enjoyed driving it. He learned how to drive stick shift and there aren't a lot of teens of 20+ year olds that know how.
