Rating: 4.32
Based on 90 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan is a minivan, a body style Dodge has been a leader in for decades. This model year is part of the fifth generation (2008-2020). Key trims include the AVP, SE, SXT, and R/T. Its popularity stems from its Stow 'n Go seating, making cargo hauling incredibly easy. New pricing started in the low $20,000s, while used prices vary greatly. The Grand Caravan stands out for its affordability and practicality.

What Problems Does the 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan include issues with the transmission, particularly rough shifting or complete failure at higher mileages. Electrical problems are also common, affecting the power sliding doors, windows, and entertainment system. Some owners have reported issues with the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module), which can cause various electrical malfunctions.

Recalls for the 2013 model year have addressed issues such as faulty airbag inflators and potential fuel leaks, so checking the vehicle's recall history is crucial. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the durability of the Stow 'n Go seating mechanisms, which can become worn or damaged over time. Additionally, the suspension components and braking system may require more frequent maintenance compared to some competitors.

Early model years of the fifth generation (2008-2010) had more reported issues than later years like 2013, but it's still essential to have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a qualified mechanic to identify any potential problems.

How long will the 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan last?

With reasonable maintenance, a 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan can reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or provide 10-15 years of service. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Weaknesses that emerge over time include transmission issues, electrical problems (especially with power doors), and rust in areas with road salt. Regularly changing fluids, addressing repairs promptly, and rustproofing can extend its lifespan. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its service life.

I got this car approximately 3 months ago from a close relative, and I can say there have absolutely been no issues that would make you regret your decision, (knock on wood). The car has never left me stranded, and has always started. When I first got the vehicle I got basic maintenance such as a synthetic oil change, oil filter, an engine filter, and an in-cabin air filter. After some time, the check-engine light appeared due to a thermostat. After one new installment of a thermostat, and some freshly topped coolant, there have been no other issues. I give the comfort rating a 5, due to the spacious interior, and captain-chair seats. I give the interior a 4 because while it may not have "everything" you want, it has everything you need (even coming from a base model). Performance is a 4, because it's not an M3. I give the value a 4 as well simply because of the fact that you can buy one as a consumer fairly priced, and you can sell one as a seller for a decent price. Exterior is a 3, due to the largeness of the vehicle. However, LED brake lights, and rear turn signals are standard, which is really nice. And lastly, other than basic maintenance, and one mishap, I give this car a 5 star rating for reliability.

Our 2013 Grand Caravan has 140,000 miles on it. No problems to date. Rear air conditioner tubing rusted, but covered by warranty. 2nd set of tires and brakes. 21 mpg around town and 32 mpg on highway. We've hauled everything you can imagine and pulls our boat around on the weekends. Needless to say we are very happy with our Dodge Grand Caravan. We will buy another one.

Car stalls while driving with no signs it's hard to manuver the steering wheel and brakes lock it starts when I wants this is so unfair as I'm a single mom of six I'm almost done paying for it and now all this macanical issues arise
transmision
When shift into drive ,the transmission slipped. IT is not always happend. But most time in winter, eventhough i warm up van for 5 mintues.

The best way to review a car is to ask previous owners. I've owned the 09 SXT full loaded for four years and the laundry list of repairs that inevitably accompanied it. Save your money and spend the little extra on another car. Or expect to spend it later down the line on this one, and trust me, you'll spend it before you can even trade it in.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan's built-in tech includes a standard CD player and available Uconnect infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touchscreen (depending on trim). Entertainment options include an optional rear-seat DVD entertainment system with screens for rear passengers. Driver-assistance features are limited compared to newer vehicles but may include features like a rearview camera and blind-spot monitoring on higher trims.

Safety features include standard anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and multiple airbags. Optional safety features include rear park assist and integrated child booster seats.

The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2013 Grand Caravan an overall safety rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave it mixed ratings, with good scores in some crash tests but marginal scores in others. Check NHTSA and IIHS websites for specific test details. Higher trims offer more features than the base AVP.

2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan ranged from around $20,000 for the base AVP trim to over $30,000 for a fully equipped R/T. Current used market prices vary widely based on condition, mileage, and trim, typically ranging from $5,000 to $15,000. The Grand Caravan depreciates significantly, and factors affecting resale value include its maintenance history, accident record, and overall condition. Lower mileage and well-maintained examples fetch higher prices.

2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan tends to be relatively economical in terms of insurance costs. Fuel costs are moderate, given its V6 engine. Maintenance can be average, but potential repairs, especially transmission or electrical issues, can increase long-term ownership costs. Overall, it's not the cheapest vehicle to own, but it provides good value for its utility if major repairs are avoided through preventative maintenance.

2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Minivan Van with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Compare to Other Minivan Van?

The 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan competes with minivans like the Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey, and Chrysler Town & Country. In terms of price, the Grand Caravan is generally more affordable than the Sienna and Odyssey. Performance is comparable, all offering V6 engines. However, the Sienna and Odyssey often outperform the Grand Caravan in reliability and resale value.

Features are similar across the class, with Stow 'n Go seating being a key differentiator for the Grand Caravan and Town & Country. The Honda Odyssey typically offers a more refined interior and better handling, while the Toyota Sienna is known for its longevity.

Alternatives to the Grand Caravan include the Chrysler Town & Country (essentially a more luxurious version), used Honda Odysseys or Toyota Siennas (for better reliability), or even a larger SUV if minivan space isn't essential. For budget-conscious buyers needing minivan functionality, the Grand Caravan is a decent option, but those prioritizing reliability might prefer a used Sienna or Odyssey, albeit at a higher price.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan a Good Minivan Van?

The 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan is ideal for budget-conscious families needing a practical and spacious minivan with easy-to-use Stow 'n Go seating. It's worth buying used if you find a well-maintained example with a clean history and a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Avoid models with high mileage or signs of neglect. Higher trims like the SXT or R/T offer more features, but the SE provides good value if you don't need all the extras. Consider alternatives like a used Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna if reliability is a top priority, but be prepared to pay more.

Great fold down flat seats

I drove from Los Angeles to Florida 4 times with 145K on the clock, no issues gas not bad on eco on freeway, fold down seats are a dream when you purchase some furniture and the ability to go camping with the seats down was great. Kept a mattress in the back if on a long trip I wanted to take a nap at the rest stop. A vehicle i though I would never own turns out to be the most practical I ever owned.

This van is unsafe.

This van is unsafe. The bash lights go out at random times. The turn signals and the brake lights don't work, and the wipers won't turn off. Someone could run into us when the brake lights are out and injure anyone inside. I'm afraid to drive at night or on the highway.

Fix or repair often

It is roomie for a growing family. There are many nice features. There are way too many mechanical issues a recall should be issued to fix. Like when it just shuts off while driving. Feels unsafe a lot of the time. Doors have way too many issues. Back end leaks. Have overhauled the motor a few times and still keep having repairs. Great car but budget for the repairs.

It was okay

This car is a people mover. It has lots of room and the Stow and Go seating is very handy. I took lots of long trips in it and the roominess was good for traveling with kids. It was not all that reliable though and was requiring expensive repairs after only about 145,000 miles, so I traded it in.
