Rating: 3.88
Based on 46 Owner Reviews â–¶
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2004 Chevrolet Colorado marked GM's entry into the compact pickup truck market, replacing the S-10. Available in regular, extended, and crew cab body styles, the Colorado offered configurations for various needs. Key trims included the base model, LS, and Z71. New pricing ranged from approximately $15,000 to $25,000 depending on the configuration. It was popular for its improved ride quality and modern styling compared to its predecessor, providing a comfortable and capable alternative in the segment.
The Good

The 2004 Chevrolet Colorado offered decent performance from its inline engines, providing adequate power for everyday tasks. Its modern design was more appealing than older compact trucks. It was relatively fuel-efficient for its class, offering practical value. For emotional buyers, it offered a rugged, truck-like experience with available off-road trims. Its affordability made it an attractive option.

The Bad

The 2004 Chevrolet Colorado had some known weaknesses. The interior materials were considered cheap and basic. Some owners reported issues with the 4WD system and electrical components. Rust was a potential problem, particularly in areas with harsh winters. Premature ball joint wear and issues with the door lock actuators were also common complaints.

What Problems Does the 2004 Chevrolet Colorado Have?

The 2004 Chevrolet Colorado had several frequently reported problems. One of the most common issues involved the intermediate steering shaft, which could cause a clunking or popping noise. Some owners also experienced problems with the door lock actuators failing. Another prevalent issue was premature ball joint wear, requiring frequent replacements. Rust, especially in areas where salt is used on roads, was a significant concern, affecting the frame and body panels.
Electrical problems, including issues with the 4WD system and various sensors, were also reported. Engine issues, such as head gasket failures, were less common but could occur in higher-mileage vehicles. There were recalls related to various safety concerns, including issues with the airbags and the fuel system. Long-term reliability concerns often revolved around the durability of the suspension components and the overall build quality of the interior. While not exclusive to the 2004 model year, these issues tended to be more pronounced in earlier models due to age and wear. It is recommended to thoroughly inspect any used 2004 Colorado for signs of rust, listen for unusual noises from the steering or suspension, and check the functionality of all electrical components.

How long will the 2004 Chevrolet Colorado last?

With proper maintenance, a 2004 Chevrolet Colorado could potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners reported achieving this milestone with regular servicing. However, long-term durability was influenced heavily by maintenance habits and environmental factors. Vehicles regularly serviced and driven in moderate climates tended to last longer. Weaknesses over time included rust, particularly in regions with harsh winters. Suspension components, such as ball joints and shocks, were prone to wear. Electrical issues and engine problems, although less frequent, could arise as the vehicle aged. Proper fluid changes, timely repairs, and rust prevention measures were crucial for maximizing the lifespan of the 2004 Colorado.

I traded in my Sierra for the Canyon in July 2004, it had 24 miles on it. What an awesome little truck. It now has 279,000. Mechanically sound. Replaced alternator 5 yrs ago. Been thru 5 sets of tires! Wrecked twice. It has worked hard its whole life and been very reliable and nothing but dependable, Im back into a full size pickup, but I couldnt part with the Canyon. Still own it. Kids drive it. I really do love this truck- Its not for sale!

Built cheaply but cost dearly to fix any issues with vehical. Hopefully the 4door is more comfortable but the 2door is Not. Makes me miss my Ford. This truck was not made for the working man!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Chevrolet Colorado offered basic tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment features included an AM/FM radio, with optional CD players available on higher trims. Built-in tech was relatively limited compared to modern vehicles; features like navigation or advanced infotainment systems were not available. Driver-assistance features were also minimal, primarily consisting of standard features like power steering and brakes.
Safety features included standard front airbags and antilock brakes (ABS) were often optional. Side airbags were not available. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) indicated mixed results. Cab configurations without side airbags generally received lower scores in side-impact tests. Optional features included power windows, power locks, and remote keyless entry, primarily on the LS and Z71 trims. The interior was functional but basic, with a focus on utility rather than luxury. The 2004 Colorado lacked many of the advanced technology and safety features found in contemporary vehicles, reflecting the standards of the time. Given its age, potential buyers should prioritize a thorough inspection and consider upgrading safety features if possible.

2004 Chevrolet Colorado Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Chevrolet Colorado's price ranged from approximately $15,000 to $25,000, depending on the trim and options. In today's used market, prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, but this can vary greatly based on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant due to age. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition, mileage, any history of accidents or damage, and the specific trim level. Models with lower mileage, well-maintained engines, and minimal rust command higher prices. The availability of desirable options, such as 4WD, also impacts resale value. High mileage and rust issues significantly reduce its value.

2004 Chevrolet Colorado Cost of Ownership

The 2004 Chevrolet Colorado is moderately economical to own. Insurance costs are generally reasonable. Fuel costs depend on the engine and driving habits, but are typical for a compact truck of that era. Maintenance can be affordable, but repairs, especially for known issues like ball joints and electrical problems, can add up. Long-term ownership costs are influenced by the vehicle's condition and maintenance history. Rust repair can be a significant expense. Overall, it's not overly costly, but diligent maintenance is essential to keep expenses down.

2004 Chevrolet Colorado Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 Chevrolet Colorado is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 Chevrolet Colorado Compare to Other Truck?

The 2004 Chevrolet Colorado competed with the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, and Ford Ranger. In terms of performance, the Tacoma often had a slight edge in reliability and resale value. The Frontier offered a similar level of capability and features at a competitive price. The Ranger was a more established player with a loyal following.
Compared to the Tacoma, the Colorado's reliability wasn't as strong, and its resale value was lower. The Frontier offered a more robust engine in some configurations, while the Ranger had a simpler, more durable design. Feature-wise, the Colorado was comparable, offering similar options and trim levels.
If reliability and long-term value are top priorities, the Toyota Tacoma would be a better alternative, despite its higher price. For a balance of features and affordability, the Nissan Frontier could be considered. The Ford Ranger offers a more traditional truck experience. The Colorado provides a decent blend of comfort and capability, but its known reliability issues should be carefully considered. A thorough inspection is essential before purchasing.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Chevrolet Colorado a Good Truck?

The 2004 Chevrolet Colorado is ideal for buyers seeking an affordable and capable compact pickup truck for light-duty tasks. It's worth buying if found in good condition with documented maintenance history and minimal rust. A well-maintained Z71 trim offers a good balance of features and off-road capability. However, potential buyers should be aware of the common reliability issues and thoroughly inspect the vehicle before purchasing. It's best suited for those who need a basic truck for occasional hauling or recreational use and are willing to perform regular maintenance. Given its age, it's recommended to prioritize condition over specific trims and budget for potential repairs.

Overall really good investment.

It'll have those periodic problems that any vehicle will have with time, mostly stupid little things that are annoying to deal with and a pain to fix, but all things considered, I think it holds up pretty well, and it delivers reliable performance. I get a lot done with this vehicle.

Most reliable vehicle I have ever owned.

My 2004 Colorado LS has 270,000 miles on the in-line 5. Never had a better motor and I am 70 years old. I have the old changed every 5k miles and never have to add a drop. ! Very fast from the red light too.

Just got this truck 2004 Colorado with 127k miles.

Just got this truck 2004 Colorado with 127k miles. Pretty basic, no cruise control, no fancy android auto (really miss this) and you actualy have to use a key to open the doors! How 90's. Anyway, gas mileage sucks at 16mpg, but it runs well, carries stuff well, has trailer hitch and in general I'm very happy with the purchase and would get another.
