Rating: 4.07
Based on 78 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2008 Toyota Corolla is a compact car, part of the 10th generation (2007-2013). Offered as a sedan, it's known for its reliability and fuel efficiency. Key trims include the base CE, S, and LE. The original pricing ranged from approximately $15,000 to $17,000. Its popularity stems from its reputation for dependability, affordability, and low running costs, making it a practical choice.
The Good

The 2008 Toyota Corolla excels in reliability and fuel efficiency (appealing to practical buyers). Performance is adequate for daily driving. While not luxurious, it offers a comfortable ride. The Corolla's simple design and affordable price contribute to its excellent value. Owners appreciate its low maintenance and dependable reputation, fostering a sense of security.

The Bad

The 2008 Toyota Corolla's weaknesses include a somewhat bland interior and less-than-thrilling driving dynamics. Potential buyers should watch out for excessive oil consumption in higher-mileage examples and inspect for rust, especially in areas with road salt. The automatic transmission can sometimes exhibit rough shifting as it ages.

What Problems Does the 2008 Toyota Corolla Have?

The 2008 Toyota Corolla is generally reliable, but some frequently reported problems and long-term reliability concerns exist. Excessive oil consumption is a common issue, particularly in higher-mileage vehicles. This can lead to engine damage if not monitored regularly. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, including rough shifting and occasional slipping, especially as the car ages. Rust can be a problem in regions that use road salt, so inspecting the undercarriage and lower body panels is essential.
Recalls for the 2008 Corolla have included issues related to airbag inflators (Takata recalls) and potential problems with the engine control module (ECM) in certain models, which could cause the engine to stall. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN against recall databases to ensure all necessary repairs have been completed. Some owners have reported minor electrical issues, such as problems with interior lights or power windows, but these are less common. Overall, the 2008 Corolla is a dependable car, but addressing potential oil consumption and rust issues is vital for long-term ownership.

How long will the 2008 Toyota Corolla last?

With proper maintenance, a 2008 Toyota Corolla can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding 300,000 miles with regular servicing. The key to longevity is consistent oil changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires), and addressing any emerging issues promptly. Long-term durability is a strong point, but potential weaknesses include rust (especially in colder climates), increased oil consumption as the engine ages, and potential issues with the automatic transmission at higher mileages. Proper maintenance records are a good indicator of a well-cared-for Corolla.

I have owned my 2008 Corolla since it was a year old. It currently has 184,000 miles on it. Other than regular maintenance I have not spent one cent on repairs. The gas mileage is so great I never worry about the price of gas. It is so dependable and reliable it is almost like a good friend.

Everything perfect except the interior sizing. Also the fact that the gear shift indicator (4spd Auto) is not on the dashboard Head Down Display, only visible by looking down and at the shift lever. Everything else is perfect about this. Even at 118,000 throttle is snappy and steering responsive.

Great car for my Son. Wife used to have one, and he really wanted one of his own. He was excited to get it and we are thankful God blessed to buy it for him
Negative Owner Reviews
CSN
I have this 2008 Toyota Corolla for 3 years and EVERY year, parts of the tensioner would have some problems such as crack and oil leakage. I am tired of this problem and this time they are saying I have to pay $1200 to replace the parts. I have been driving Toyota cars for 11 years and now they are disappointing me with their newer model quality.
Clifford D. P.E.
Ancient design short on front legroom, with lots of engine noise. I bought a 2008 Toyota Corolla LE automatic because of the advertised MPG, but I probably should have test drove it overnight first. It really is short on legroom, and the curved door panel and obtrusive dead-pedal on the drivers side makes my left leg sore, having to twist, and I just can't sit comfortably. I am avg. size, but the car is just not as roomy as the more modern competitors in its class (I recently found out that this model came out pre-1999 in Japan). It is also not very refined when taking off...it seems underpowered compared to my sisters Cobalt. Like others are saying, the Corolla is much louder than other compacts, like there is no sound insulation at all...I guess that's the price for higher mileage, but it is just too expensive ($18,400 MSRP) to sound like the old 1974 Gremlin I had in high school. I would not buy again.
azenergizer
The first thing I noticed was how little you get for your money when you buy a Corolla. On the test drive, the car was very noisy especially on the highway and the steering/handling was terrible. It's very unstable and in my opinion its unsafe. In addition to that the engine rattled somewhat like a diesel. Pros: Standard transmission is smooth and easy to use. It also gives you more power over the automatic. Roomy trunk and back seats fold down. Cons: Overpriced, no standard side/curtain airbags, no traction/stability control, noisy, unstable on corners and highway driving, AC isn't as cold as needed in Phoenix.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Toyota Corolla's built-in tech and entertainment features are relatively basic by today's standards. Standard features typically included a CD player with AM/FM radio and an auxiliary audio input jack. Higher trims might have included upgraded audio systems. Driver-assistance features were minimal, with no standard features like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking.
Safety features included standard front airbags, with optional side airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS) available. Electronic stability control (VSC) was also an available option. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally showed good results, with four or five stars in most categories. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also awarded the 2008 Corolla good ratings in its crash tests. Optional features were limited and generally focused on comfort and convenience items like power windows and locks on the base CE trim. Compared to modern vehicles, the 2008 Corolla lacks advanced safety and tech, but it offered reasonable protection for its time when equipped with optional safety features like ABS and side airbags.

2008 Toyota Corolla Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Toyota Corolla ranged from approximately $15,000 to $17,000 depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $4,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Corolla depreciates relatively slowly compared to other vehicles due to its reputation for reliability. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and whether it has a clean title. Corollas in excellent condition with low mileage and complete maintenance records command higher prices.

2008 Toyota Corolla Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Toyota Corolla is exceptionally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically low due to its safety record and affordable value. Fuel economy is excellent, contributing to lower running costs. Maintenance is generally inexpensive, with readily available and affordable parts. Repairs are usually straightforward and less costly compared to many other vehicles. Long-term ownership costs are among the lowest in its class, making it a financially sound choice for budget-conscious buyers.

2008 Toyota Corolla Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Toyota Corolla is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Toyota Corolla Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2008 Toyota Corolla's key rivals included the Honda Civic, Mazda3, and Nissan Sentra. In terms of reliability, the Corolla and Civic were generally considered top-tier. The Mazda3 offered a sportier driving experience, while the Sentra provided a more spacious interior. Feature-wise, the Corolla was somewhat basic compared to the Mazda3, which often had more available options. Price-wise, the Corolla was competitive, typically falling in the middle of the pack.
If performance is a priority, the Mazda3 is a better alternative. If interior space is crucial, the Nissan Sentra might be preferable. However, for overall reliability and low running costs, the Corolla and Civic are excellent choices. The Honda Civic offers similar reliability and fuel efficiency to the Corolla but can often command a slightly higher price in the used market. For buyers prioritizing long-term dependability and affordability, the 2008 Toyota Corolla remains a strong contender. Consider the Honda Civic for a similar experience or the Mazda3 for a sportier feel.

Reliable and money saver

I have had this car for about a year now and wow is it reliable. It is currently at 107k and gets great gas mileage and runs perfectly. The car is also very easy to work on and so I was able to put in a whole new sound system and screen instead of factory stereo all myself for very cheap. I recommend this car 100%

I though this was a good car

New the car was great. But at 180.000 miles it started making engine noizes. The VVTI tenshioner went out causing the timing chain to slap and strech. I replace all of the VVTI components. Use a name brand intake sprocket! It appears the rod bearings are worn. I have spent a lot of time working on this thing. I ran full synthetic oil. The top end sounds noizy still. There may be some cam or cap ware. Is this a toyota?

Economy transportation

We needed a simple and cheap running sedan and Toyota Corolla fit the bill. 4-doors, large trunk, rear seat was tight for 3 adults as the middle seat was uncomfortable

Rusted Roof Corolla! I am another of the blue rust

Maybe it's specific to the dark blue color, but after about 10 years essentially all of them have a very rusted roof. Reliability is ok, and it performs ok as expected. Doing ok at 200k miles, idling can get a little shaky and it can overheat a bit. I expected more than to have such a common, glaring defect in a Toyota.

Car Okay

Great car. 5 speed, fun to drive. My kids say Ò€œare you taking the sports car today?Ò€ Lol. Very reliable, and gas mileage is incredible. I don’t even worry about gas prices. It’s a 2008, but I only have 118Km on it. Only think I had to do was fix the heat shield once. A $40 fix. Otherwise perfect.

Extremely dependable. Low cost of ownership.

Great car. Sold with 190k on it. I know the previous and current owners. It’s still going strong. Other than maintenance the only thing it was in the shop for was wheel bearings at 130k. Constantly got 33mpg and 29mpg in the winter. I commute 30k a year and have done many multi state road trips in it without worry. I’d still own it but i needed something that would go through deep snow better.
