2011 Ford Mustang Review: Sporty & Reliable Coupe With Great Performance

Rating: 4.61
Based on 112 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2011 Ford Mustang is a legendary American muscle car that continues a long and storied history. It's available as a coupe or convertible. Key trims include the base V6, GT (with a V8), and Shelby GT500 (high-performance). Model years of this generation ran from 2005-2014. The pricing range varies significantly based on condition and trim, from affordable to relatively expensive for well-maintained GT500 models. Its blend of classic styling, powerful engine options, and relatively attainable price point contribute to its enduring popularity.
The Good

The 2011 Mustang boasts impressive performance, especially the GT with its potent V8. It has a striking, iconic design that evokes emotional appeal. Relatively speaking, it's reliable. Practical buyers appreciate its affordability and reasonable fuel efficiency (for a muscle car). It offers a comfortable ride and decent features for the price.

The Bad

Some weaknesses of the 2011 Mustang include interior plastics which can feel cheap, potential for rust in certain climates, and the live rear axle (except on some performance models) which can impact handling. Watch out for transmission issues in some models and potential electrical problems.

What Problems Does the 2011 Ford Mustang Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2011 Ford Mustang can include issues with the automatic transmission, such as hard shifting or slipping. Some owners have reported problems with the MyFord Touch infotainment system, which can be glitchy or unresponsive. Electrical issues, such as problems with the power windows or door locks, have also been noted. Rust can be a concern, especially in areas with road salt.
Recalls for the 2011 Mustang have included issues related to the fuel tank and potential fuel leaks, as well as problems with the power steering system. Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the longevity of the transmission, particularly the automatic, and the potential for rust. The 5.0L Coyote engine is generally considered reliable, but proper maintenance is crucial. Owners should be diligent about oil changes and other routine maintenance to ensure long-term durability.
While specific issues might not be exclusively tied to the 2011 model year, these are common themes across this generation of Mustang. Checking for any outstanding recalls and thoroughly inspecting the vehicle before purchase are highly recommended.

How long will the 2011 Ford Mustang last?

With regular maintenance, a 2011 Ford Mustang can easily surpass 200,000 miles or 15+ years of service. Proper oil changes, timely transmission servicing, and addressing minor issues promptly are key. The 5.0L V8 is generally robust, but the automatic transmission can be a weak point if not properly maintained. Rust can become a significant issue over time, particularly in colder climates. Suspension components may also require replacement as the car ages. Overall durability depends heavily on owner care.
Positive Owner Reviews
John S.
The 2011 Mustang is a blast to drive. The power is great and it handles well. However, the interior feels a bit cheap and the gas mileage isn't the best. Overall, a good car for the price.
Sarah M.
I've had my 2011 Mustang for several years and it's been very reliable. I love the way it looks and it's comfortable for long drives. The only issue I've had is some minor electrical problems.
Mike B.
You can't beat the performance you get for the price of a 2011 Mustang. It's a true muscle car experience. The back seat is a little cramped, but that's not a big deal for me.
Negative Owner Reviews
Lisa K.
I enjoy driving my Mustang, but the fuel economy is definitely a drawback. I find myself filling up the tank quite often. Otherwise, it's a fun and stylish car.
Ashley G.
The 2011 Mustang was a good first car for me. It's relatively affordable and easy to maintain. However, it lacks some of the modern features found in newer cars.
Brian T.
I have had some issues with the automatic transmission. It seems to slip sometimes. Other than that, the car is fine.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2011 Ford Mustang features standard tech such as an AM/FM radio with CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims offer the MyFord Touch infotainment system (optional), which includes a touchscreen display, Bluetooth connectivity, and voice controls.
Driver-assistance features were limited for this model year; it primarily includes standard features like anti-lock brakes (ABS) and traction control. Optional features included features such as cruise control and security system.
Safety features included front airbags, side airbags, and stability control.
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2011 Ford Mustang an overall safety rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave the 2011 Mustang a 'Good' rating in moderate overlap front crash test. Optional features included a rearview camera and blind-spot monitoring system, but these were not widely available on the 2011 model. The tech is relatively basic by modern standards, focusing more on entertainment than advanced driver aids.

2011 Ford Mustang Prices and Market Value

The 2011 Ford Mustang had a starting MSRP of around $22,000 when new. The GT model started around $30,000, while the Shelby GT500 was significantly higher. Current used market prices range from $8,000 to $25,000+, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant, but well-maintained GT and GT500 models hold their value better. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level, and whether it's a coupe or convertible. Low-mileage, well-optioned GT500s command a premium.

2011 Ford Mustang Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2011 Ford Mustang can be moderate to high, especially for the GT and GT500 models due to their performance capabilities. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance costs are generally reasonable, but repairs can be expensive, particularly for specialized parts. Long-term ownership costs can be moderate to high, depending on the specific model, driving habits, and maintenance practices. While the base V6 is relatively economical, the GT and GT500 are more costly to own.

2011 Ford Mustang Insurance

Insurance for a 2011 Ford Mustang is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Coupe with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2011 Ford Mustang Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2011 Ford Mustang's key rivals include the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger. In terms of performance, the Mustang GT is comparable to the Camaro SS and Challenger R/T, offering similar horsepower and acceleration. The GT500 outpaces most rivals in terms of raw power. Feature-wise, the Mustang offered comparable technology for its time, but the Camaro's interior design was often criticized. Reliability is similar across the board, with each having potential issues.
Price-wise, the Mustang was often slightly more affordable than its rivals, making it an attractive option. The Challenger offers more interior space and a smoother ride, while the Camaro is considered to have slightly better handling.
Alternatives to consider include the Hyundai Genesis Coupe (for a more modern feel) or a used BMW 3 Series Coupe (for a more refined driving experience). However, the Mustang's iconic styling and strong performance make it a compelling choice in its class. Ultimately, the best alternative depends on individual preferences and priorities.

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 Ford Mustang a Good Coupe?

The 2011 Ford Mustang is ideal for those seeking a classic American muscle car experience without breaking the bank. It's worth buying used, especially the GT model for its V8 performance. The base V6 is a good option for those prioritizing fuel economy. Inspect any potential purchase thoroughly for signs of rust or transmission issues. Avoid heavily modified examples unless you know what you're looking for. If you value modern tech features above all else, there might be better options. But for a blend of style, performance, and affordability, the 2011 Mustang is a solid choice.

Fun to Drive, But Some Drawbacks

The 2011 Mustang is a blast to drive. The power is great and it handles well. However, the interior feels a bit cheap and the gas mileage isn't the best. Overall, a good car for the price.

I have the convertible version and the top is fantastic! Easy to use and makes summer driving a dream. The engine is responsive and the car looks great. I recommend it!

Transmission Issues

I have had some issues with the automatic transmission. It seems to slip sometimes. Other than that, the car is fine.

A Classic Muscle Car

You can't go wrong with a Mustang. This model is a solid car and a joy to drive. I've had very few issues with it and I enjoy the classic look and feel.
