The 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 is a full-size pickup truck known for its blend of capability and refinement. Part of the second-generation Sierra (2007-2014), it's available in regular, extended, and crew cab body styles. Key trims include the Work Truck, SLE, SLT, and Denali. When new, prices ranged from around $20,000 to over $40,000 depending on configuration. Its robust engine options and available luxury features helped it stand out in a competitive market. It's popular for its versatility, serving both work and personal needs.
The Good

The 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 boasts strong performance thanks to its powerful engine options. While fuel efficiency isn't its forte, its reputation for reliability is appealing. What Problems Does the 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 include excessive oil consumption, often attributed to the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system. This system, designed to improve fuel economy by deactivating cylinders, can sometimes lead to oil leaking past the piston rings. Transmission issues, such as slipping or rough shifting, have also been reported. Electrical problems, including issues with the instrument cluster and power windows, are not uncommon. Rust, particularly around the wheel wells and rocker panels, is a long-term concern, especially in regions where salt is used on roads. Recalls for the 2008 Sierra 1500 have included issues related to the brake system and potential fuel leaks. While the 2008 model year itself doesn't have significantly more problems than other years in this generation, the AFM issue is a common and well-documented concern that prospective buyers should be aware of. Routine maintenance, including frequent oil changes and addressing any unusual noises or symptoms promptly, is crucial to mitigating these long-term reliability concerns.

How long will the 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 last?

A well-maintained 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. With consistent maintenance and timely repairs, many owners report service lives exceeding 15 years. Durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes or ignoring warning signs can significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan. The primary long-term weaknesses revolve around the AFM system potentially leading to oil consumption, rust in certain climates, and eventual wear and tear on components like the transmission and suspension. Preventative maintenance, such as regular fluid flushes and rustproofing, can extend its service life substantially.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 offered a range of tech and safety features for its time. Base models included a standard AM/FM radio, while higher trims could be equipped with a CD player, satellite radio, and a premium Bose sound system. Navigation was an optional feature on some models. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, but included available features such as StabiliTrak electronic stability control and traction control.
Safety features included standard antilock brakes (ABS) and front airbags. Side-curtain airbags were optional on some models.
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 varying crash-test ratings, depending on the cab configuration. For example, the crew cab version often received higher ratings than the extended cab in frontal crash tests. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also conducted crash tests, with results varying. It's advisable to consult the NHTSA and IIHS websites for specific crash-test ratings based on the cab style. While the tech is dated by today's standards, features like satellite radio and stability control were advancements at the time. Consider specific trim packages when evaluating the tech available in a particular 2008 Sierra 1500.

2008 GMC Sierra 1500 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 ranged in price from approximately $20,000 for a basic work truck to over $40,000 for a fully loaded Denali. Current used market prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and trim level, ranging from roughly $5,000 to $15,000. Depreciation has been substantial, as is typical for trucks. Factors affecting resale value include the engine type (V8s generally command higher prices), cab configuration (crew cabs are more desirable), 4WD capability, and overall condition. Trucks with documented maintenance history and minimal rust hold their value better. High mileage and neglected maintenance significantly reduce resale value.

2008 GMC Sierra 1500 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 are typically moderate, but can vary based on driving record and coverage levels. Fuel costs are generally high, especially with V8 engines. Maintenance can be moderate if routine services are followed. However, potential repairs, such as those related to the AFM system or transmission, can be costly. Long-term ownership costs are generally considered average to above average for a full-size truck, making it less economical compared to smaller vehicles. Budgeting for potential repairs is essential.

2008 GMC Sierra 1500 Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Four-Door Cab Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 Compare to Other Four-Door Cab Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 GMC Sierra 1500's key rivals included the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (its corporate twin), and Dodge Ram 1500. In terms of performance, the Sierra offered comparable engine options and towing capacity to its competitors. Feature-wise, the higher trims like the SLT and Denali provided similar levels of comfort and technology. However, the Ford F-150 was often praised for its slightly more refined ride and interior. The Dodge Ram 1500 offered a distinctive styling and a comfortable rear suspension design. Reliability-wise, all these trucks have their potential issues. The Sierra's AFM system is a known concern, while the Ford and Ram have their own common problems. Price-wise, the Sierra was generally competitive. Alternatives to the Sierra include the Toyota Tundra, known for its strong reliability, but potentially pricier on the used market. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a very similar alternative, offering nearly identical features and performance at a potentially lower price point. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual needs and preferences, as well as the specific condition and price of the used vehicle.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 a Good Four-Door Cab Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 is a solid choice for individuals needing a capable and versatile full-size truck. It's ideal for those who require towing or hauling capabilities but also desire a comfortable and well-equipped vehicle. Whether it's worth buying depends heavily on the truck's condition and price. A well-maintained Sierra 1500, particularly an SLE or SLT trim with a V8 engine, can offer good value. However, buyers should carefully inspect for rust, listen for transmission issues, and be aware of the potential for AFM-related oil consumption. Given its age, buying used is the only option, and a thorough pre-purchase inspection is strongly recommended. Consider a Silverado 1500 as a very similar and possibly cheaper alternative.

Worst truck ever made.

had to replace catalytic converter, power steering line, brake pads, CV joints, tensioner, pulleys, belts, valve cover for oil issues, dipstick tube holder, power switch for window after 90 days of ownership. 160K and is in shop again for throttle body sensor and exhaust issues! Wish it would spontaneously explode.

This is one of the worst vehicles I've owned

It wouldn't be a bad truck if it didn't have over $3,000 worth of problems to it that I bought from the dealership other than that it wouldn't be a bad truck

Going to miss this truck!

Simply a great truck! Has almost every feature you could want, even being 10 years old! The 6.2L V8 sounds and drives great, even produces decent mpg considering (about 17mpg). Originally this truck was purchased new by my Father who later passed it down after racking up 200k miles driving to work in it!
