Rating: 4.59
Based on 52 Owner Reviews β–Ά
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 is a full-size pickup truck, part of the second generation Sierra produced from 2007 to 2014. Available in regular, extended, and crew cab configurations, it offered diverse body styles. Key trims included the base, SLE, SLT, and Denali. Its popularity stems from its robust build, comfortable ride (for a truck), and a wide range of engine options. New, the Sierra 1500 ranged approximately from $20,000 to $40,000, depending on trim and options.
The Good

The 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 offers a compelling blend of practicality and appeal. Its strong engine options deliver ample power for work and play. While not the most fuel-efficient, its overall reliability is a definite plus. Comfortable cabin appointments and a stylish exterior design provide an emotionally satisfying ownership experience, while its proven track record offers peace of mind for the practical buyer.

The Bad

The 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 has some known weaknesses. Watch out for potential issues with the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, which can lead to oil consumption. Transmission problems, particularly in early models, have been reported. Rust can also be a concern, especially in regions with harsh winters. Check for electrical issues and ensure proper maintenance records are available.

What Problems Does the 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 Have?

The 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 has several frequently reported problems. The Active Fuel Management (AFM) system on the 5.3L V8 is a common concern, leading to excessive oil consumption and potential engine damage over time. Transmission issues, including hard shifting and slipping, have also been reported, particularly in earlier production models. Rust is a significant concern, especially in areas with road salt, affecting the undercarriage and body panels. Electrical problems, such as malfunctioning door lock actuators and issues with the instrument cluster, are not uncommon.

Recalls for the 2007 Sierra 1500 have addressed issues like faulty brake light switches and potential steering shaft problems. Long-term reliability can be affected by the AFM system, rust, and transmission wear. Suspension components, such as ball joints and tie rod ends, may require replacement due to wear and tear. Regular maintenance, including frequent oil changes and rust prevention measures, can help mitigate some of these issues, but they remain significant concerns for potential buyers. Checking the vehicle's history for past recalls and addressing any potential issues promptly is crucial for long-term ownership.

How long will the 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 can reasonably reach 200,000 miles or more, translating to 15-20 years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes or ignoring early warning signs of mechanical issues will significantly shorten its lifespan. The AFM system's potential for oil consumption issues, along with rust susceptibility and potential transmission wear, are key weaknesses that can impact long-term durability. Regular inspections and proactive repairs are essential to maximize its lifespan.

This pickup truck has met all my needs. It has plenty of legroom in the front and back. The most comfortable ride I've had in a pickup after testing several others. A real find and bargain for someone who's looking to buy an extended cab pickup.

It would really be nice if this dealer would add some interior photos. There is no need for 20 exterior photos of a vehicle.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 offered a relatively basic level of technology compared to modern vehicles. Entertainment features typically included an AM/FM radio with a CD player; higher trims could offer a Bose audio system and satellite radio. Driver-assistance features were limited, with standard features like antilock brakes (ABS) and traction control being the primary offerings.

Safety features included front airbags and optional side-curtain airbags on some trims. Electronic stability control (StabiliTrak) was available on some models, enhancing vehicle control in slippery conditions. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring available.

Crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) varied depending on the cab configuration. Regular and extended cab models generally received four-star ratings for frontal crash protection, while crew cab models often achieved five-star ratings. Side-impact crash test ratings were generally lower, with three or four stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) ratings also varied; some models earned "Good" ratings in frontal offset crash tests, while others received "Acceptable" ratings. Optional features included OnStar, which provided emergency services and vehicle diagnostics.

2007 GMC Sierra 1500 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 ranged from approximately $20,000 to $40,000, depending on the trim level, cab configuration, and options. As a used vehicle, prices now range typically from $5,000 to $15,000, contingent on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant due to its age. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's overall condition, maintenance history, mileage, and the presence of desirable options like four-wheel drive or a specific engine. Well-maintained, lower-mileage examples with a clean title command higher prices.

2007 GMC Sierra 1500 Cost of Ownership

The 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 is moderately costly to own long-term. Insurance costs are average for a full-size truck. Fuel economy is below modern standards. Maintenance, including oil changes and tire replacements, is typical. However, repairs can be significant due to potential issues like AFM system problems, transmission wear, and rust. Budgeting for potential major repairs is essential. Overall, it's not the most economical vehicle, but the initial purchase price can be attractive.

2007 GMC Sierra 1500 Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 competes with the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (its corporate twin), Dodge Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra. Performance is comparable to the F-150 and Silverado, with similar engine options and towing capabilities. The Tundra offered potentially better reliability in some areas but might be more expensive to buy used.

In terms of features, the Sierra 1500 is somewhat basic compared to later model rivals. The Ram 1500, particularly in higher trims, offered a slightly more comfortable and refined interior. Reliability-wise, the Ford F-150 had its own set of potential issues, while the Tundra often scored higher in long-term reliability surveys. Price-wise, the Sierra 1500 generally falls in the middle of the pack on the used market.

A comparable alternative would be the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, offering similar performance and features at a similar price point. If reliability is a top concern and budget allows, a Toyota Tundra, though possibly pricier, might be a better choice. The Ford F-150 could be a viable option depending on specific needs and availability, but careful inspection for known issues is recommended. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities and the specific condition of the vehicle being considered.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 is suitable for buyers seeking an affordable and capable full-size truck for work or occasional hauling. It's worth considering if purchased used at a reasonable price, especially if the vehicle has been well-maintained and has a documented service history. However, potential buyers should be aware of common issues like AFM-related oil consumption, transmission problems, and rust. Opting for a higher trim level like the SLT offers more creature comforts. Thorough inspection before buying is essential, and a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended.

Very reliable full size truck that will haul a lot

This truck drives great, whether full or empty. The ride comfort is excellent and I've never had the rough ride other trucks have. Turn the key and she starts easily with very little maintenance required. Oil changes, battery, tires and a few other things. I've used this truck to haul a lot of things. It's very strong and holds a lot. The Decked bed system is awesome. I can store things inside (tools, supplies, etc) and I don't have to worry about them getting wet. The side tool boxes also keep things dry and I store the Decked dividers, tie downs, bungee cords, etc. The truck has done everything we've asked it to. I highly recommend it.

Great truck

The truck was a great truck. Mechanically it just wouldn?t stop. I had 150,000 miles on it and only performed routine maintenance. The body on the hand didn?t stand up too well here in New Hampshire.
