What Problems Does the 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 center around the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, particularly in the 5.3L V8 engines. This system, designed to improve fuel economy by deactivating cylinders, can lead to excessive oil consumption. Owners often report needing to add oil between changes. Over time, this can foul spark plugs and damage catalytic converters.

Transmission issues, such as hard shifting or slipping, have also been reported. Rust, particularly on the rocker panels and cab corners, is a common concern, especially in regions where road salt is used. Electrical problems, including issues with the door locks and window motors, have been noted by some owners.

Recalls for the 2009 Sierra 1500 have included issues with the brake pedal assembly and potential problems with the fuel tank. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to see if any recalls apply. Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the AFM system's impact on engine longevity and the potential for rust in harsh climates. Some owners have also reported premature wear of front-end components.

How long will the 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 15-20 years of service life. However, long-term durability is heavily influenced by maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid services, and addressing rust promptly are critical. The primary long-term weaknesses include the AFM system's potential for oil consumption issues, transmission wear, and rust development. Neglecting these issues can significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan. Preventative maintenance is key to maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

I bought my gmc sierra in 2009 , brand new, and it’s the best truck that I have ever owned, and I have tried a lot of nice trucks, I mean i have owned a truck, Ford used to be my favorite , but it doesn’t even stand a chance up next to a gmc sierra like mine, my brother in-laws were very jealous about me owning it, my brothers all liked it, I have had a lot of pleasure driving my truck, and I have had very little problems with it, I’m retired now or i would buy another one just like it, gmc is the premier truck, it’s the very best, i love my truck.

Love it was the best vehicle choice I’ve made since I started driving about 20 years ago. I would definitely recommend the truck to a friend or even a random person I mean it

Junk bumper to bumper. Lifters are a guarantee to be replaced, ac compressors are garbage. Noisey bumpy ride. I can not wait to be able to sell this truck.

I owned a Sierra before so very similar to that truck. Needed another work truck and I always go Chevrolet or GMC. Will be a great investment for my business!!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 GMC Sierra 1500's built-in tech, entertainment, and safety features were fairly standard for its time. Base models typically included an AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered features like a Bose premium sound system, satellite radio, and a navigation system (optional). Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern trucks, but included available features like StabiliTrak electronic stability control.

Safety features included standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), front airbags, and side-curtain airbags on some trims. Optional features included rear parking sensors and OnStar.

Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) varied depending on the cab configuration. NHTSA gave the 2009 Sierra 1500 Crew Cab a 5-star rating for front and side crash protection for the driver and passenger. IIHS gave the Sierra "Good" rating for frontal offset crash tests for crew cab models, while other cab styles may have different results. Remember to check specific crash-test ratings for the specific cab configuration you are considering. Overall, the 2009 Sierra 1500 offered a decent array of features for its time, but lacks the advanced driver-assistance technologies found in newer vehicles.

2009 GMC Sierra 1500 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 ranged from around $20,000 for a base model to over $40,000 for a fully loaded Denali. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $18,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant, as is typical for trucks. Factors affecting resale value include the truck's overall condition, mileage, engine type (V8s generally hold more value), and whether it's a 4x4 model. Trucks with a clean title and documented maintenance history command higher prices.

2009 GMC Sierra 1500 Cost of Ownership

The 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 is moderately expensive to own long-term. Insurance costs are average for a full-size truck. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance is relatively straightforward, but repairs can be costly, particularly if the AFM system or transmission requires attention. Rust prevention is an ongoing expense in some regions. Overall, while not the most economical choice, careful maintenance can help control long-term ownership costs. Budget for potential AFM-related repairs.

2009 GMC Sierra 1500 Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 competes with the Ford F-150, Dodge Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra. In terms of performance, the Sierra's V8 engines are comparable to those offered by its rivals. Features are generally similar across the class, though the Sierra's interior design might be seen as slightly more refined than the Ram but less modern than the F-150.

Reliability is a mixed bag. The Ford F-150 is generally considered slightly more reliable, while the Toyota Tundra often tops the reliability charts. The Dodge Ram 1500 can have its own set of issues, similar to the Sierra. Price-wise, the Sierra is usually in the same ballpark as the F-150 and Ram, while the Tundra tends to command a slightly higher premium.

Alternatives to the 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 include the 2009 Ford F-150, which offers a wide range of configurations and a solid reputation, or the 2009 Toyota Tundra, known for its exceptional reliability. If reliability is a top priority, the Tundra might be a better choice, but if a good balance of features, performance, and price is desired, the Sierra remains a competitive option.

Most reliable truck i’ve ever owned

Plenty of space and the 5.3L V8 is one of the best motors i’ve ever had in a truck. Never broken down or left me stranded.

200000 Plus and Still going.

This is the longest lasting vehicle I have ever owned. I had a few problems with the suspension, but that was from wear at tear. Also the window switches have been cleaned out so they can work properly. Other than that, best investmeant i ever made.

Power and comfort features

I chose the crew and SLT 6.0L with all bells and whistles. Has the Z71 and All Terrian package. Leather heated seats are very comfortable and touch screen navigation with 6 disc Bose system sounds great for stock set up. I now have 200,000 miles and have never had any issues with engine or transmission. Still runs and shifts as new. 10,000+ towing capacity with integrated trailer breaks work very well while towing 27 foot TV weighing 8,000 pounds loaded. The interior quality is very upscale SUV and has plenty of room for family of 5. Would highly recommend paying extra for GMC quality over Dodge/Ford. The fuel economy isnt great but you have to pay to play
