2013 Honda Pilot Review: Dependable & Spacious Midsize SUV That's Affordable To Own

Rating: 4.51
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2013 Honda Pilot is a mid-size SUV, part of the second generation (2009-2015). It's a popular choice for families needing ample space and reliability. Key trims included LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring. New, it ranged approximately from $30,000 to $40,000. Its boxy shape maximizes interior space, and its reputation for dependability makes it a sought-after used SUV.
The Good

The 2013 Honda Pilot offers renowned Honda reliability, providing peace of mind. Its spacious interior ensures comfort for passengers and cargo. While not a performance vehicle, it delivers adequate power for daily driving. It represents strong value, appealing to practical buyers, while its family-friendly design and reputation for safety resonate emotionally.

The Bad

The 2013 Honda Pilot's weaknesses include a somewhat dated interior design and handling that can feel cumbersome compared to some rivals. Some owners have reported issues with the variable cylinder management (VCM) system. Transmission issues, while not widespread, are worth inspecting. Fuel economy, while decent, isn't class-leading.

What Problems Does the 2013 Honda Pilot Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2013 Honda Pilot often revolve around the Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system. This system, designed to improve fuel economy by deactivating cylinders, can sometimes lead to excessive oil consumption, rough idling, and vibrations. Some owners have opted to disable the VCM system using aftermarket devices. Transmission issues, such as rough shifting or slipping, are also reported, although less commonly. It's recommended to have the transmission fluid checked and changed regularly.
Recalls for the 2013 Honda Pilot have addressed issues such as potential fuel leakage due to faulty fuel pump components, and airbag inflator issues (as part of the larger Takata airbag recall). Check the NHTSA website for the most up-to-date recall information using the VIN. Long-term reliability concerns are generally minimal, but addressing the potential VCM and transmission issues can significantly extend the vehicle's lifespan. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and transmission fluid flushes, is crucial for preventing major problems. Rust can be a concern in areas with heavy road salt usage, so inspect the undercarriage.

How long will the 2013 Honda Pilot last?

With proper maintenance, a 2013 Honda Pilot can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, providing 10-15 years of service. Honda's reputation for reliability contributes to its long lifespan. Durability is generally strong, but weaknesses over time include potential rust in colder climates and the aforementioned VCM system issues. Regular oil changes (every 5,000-7,500 miles) and transmission fluid replacements (every 30,000-60,000 miles) are key to longevity. Ignoring these maintenance items can lead to premature wear and tear and significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan.

Ok SUV. Roomy. Four 12V outlets on EXL. Onlysay is ONLY aftermarket stereo end of 2022. Not a lot of power but 4wd low "lock". Auto ECO mode needs bypassed to prevent damage from lack of lubercation. Ktuner custom tune helps MPG and a little more pick up. Been reliable. Timing belt snapped so engine replaced, blame mechanic. Eco valve and VTECH valve had to be replaced. Adjustable Camber kit for rear, common. 15K miles in 5.5 yrs so no complaints just think of it as driving a tank. Don't expect MPG advertised unless you keep RPM at 2k and tuned with Ktuner & use non ethanol gas. Lots of Honda add ons available.

Except from the paint peeling on the front top of th car and the braking problem the car has met my requirements. This car is less than 5 years old. The only complaint is the driver side plastic frame is broken with less than 100,000 miles.

I have the Honda Pilot 2013 EX-L. I bought this car in September of 2015 to replace my 2004 Buick Ranier CXL. The exterior color is Amber Metallic (Brown) with a light tan interior. I'll start with THE GOOD: I actually liked the boxy look of the car and like the fact that it has a ton of space inside. The center console and armrest is my favorite. The third row is a plus. It get's a lot better gas mileage than my other car and I feel it will likely run forever. THE BAD: So aside from the leather heated seats, Honda doesn't put a lot of extra features on the car like I had on the Buick. If I want to switch from viewing my gas mileage to my trip counter, I have to push a button n the front panel. The car stereo is not touch screen, I would think this would be a standard feature on a 2013 model car . The trim on the doors looks kinda cheap, like something you would find on a base model car, not made by Honda. The way they designed the seats makes it a little difficult to get in an out of. If they had made the seat flat, instead of the lip on the outside, it would be much easier. THE UGLY: Okay, so unfortunately for me I did not test drive this car long enough. I noticed the day after I bought this car that after driving about 30 minutes my back, and rear hurt, BAD. After an hour I felt like I had been in a fight with an elephant...2 elephants, and had lost. When I say this is the most uncomfortable seat I have ever been in. They should use this car to torture criminals. It's awful. A back, hip and rear killer. As soon as I can get rid of it I will. It's unfortunate because I like the way it looks and feel that it would run forever. sigh.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Honda Pilot features a standard rearview camera, which was a notable safety feature for its time. Higher trims offer additional tech, including a navigation system (EX-L and Touring), and a rear-seat entertainment system with a DVD player (EX-L and Touring). Entertainment features include a seven-speaker audio system (LX), which is upgraded in higher trims.
Driver-assistance features are relatively basic compared to modern vehicles. It does not offer advanced driver-assistance systems like adaptive cruise control or lane departure warning.
Safety features include anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, and a full complement of airbags.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) were generally positive. The 2013 Pilot earned a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS. The NHTSA gave it a 4-star overall safety rating. Optional features mainly consist of the navigation and rear entertainment systems, which were only available on the EX-L and Touring trims. The lack of modern driver-assistance features is a notable difference compared to newer SUVs.

2013 Honda Pilot Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Honda Pilot ranged from approximately $30,000 for the base LX trim to around $40,000 for the top-of-the-line Touring model. Current used market prices typically range from $10,000 to $18,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant, but Honda's reputation for reliability helps maintain resale value better than some competitors. Factors affecting resale value include: mileage, condition (mechanical and cosmetic), trim level (Touring models command higher prices), and maintenance history. Clean titles and documented service records also boost resale value.

2013 Honda Pilot Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2013 Honda Pilot are generally moderate, falling within the average range for a mid-size SUV. Fuel costs are also average for its class, though not exceptional. Maintenance costs are relatively low due to Honda's reliability, but repairs can be expensive if major components fail. Long-term ownership costs are generally economical, especially if regular maintenance is performed. Avoiding neglect is key to keeping costs down and maximizing its lifespan. It's generally considered an economical vehicle to own long-term.

2013 Honda Pilot Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Honda Pilot is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Honda Pilot Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2013 Honda Pilot competes with vehicles like the Toyota Highlander, Nissan Pathfinder, Chevrolet Traverse, and Ford Explorer. In terms of reliability, the Pilot and Highlander are generally considered top contenders. The Pathfinder offers a more modern interior and better fuel economy in some trims, while the Traverse boasts more cargo space. The Explorer offers a sportier driving experience.
Compared to the Pilot, the Highlander often commands a slightly higher price on the used market due to its reputation. The Pathfinder and Traverse can be found for less, but may not offer the same long-term reliability. In terms of features, the Pilot's tech is dated compared to newer models in its class. Its performance is adequate but not exciting, lagging behind the Explorer's available turbocharged engines.
If reliability is paramount and a spacious interior is needed, the 2013 Highlander is a similar alternative. For more modern features and a potentially lower price, the Nissan Pathfinder could be considered, but with careful inspection for potential transmission issues. The Chevrolet Traverse offers greater cargo capacity but lower predicted reliability. For buyers prioritizing driving dynamics, a newer Ford Explorer may be preferable.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Honda Pilot a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2013 Honda Pilot is an ideal choice for families seeking a reliable and spacious mid-size SUV at a reasonable price. It's worth buying, especially on the used market, for those prioritizing dependability and practicality over the latest technology or sporty handling. A well-maintained EX or EX-L trim offers a good balance of features and value. However, carefully inspect for VCM-related issues and ensure regular maintenance has been performed. Avoid neglected examples, and consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic. If you value advanced tech, newer models or competing brands might be more suitable, but for proven reliability, the 2013 Pilot remains a solid option.

Not impressed with this car at all

My Honda Pilot won't connect to my phone for hands free link. And no way to fix it. One of the reasons I bought the car is so I dont have to touch my phone while driving. And with a honda this isn't possible unless you can purchase an outdated phone that is compatible. The inside has cheap plastic in areas. Passenger door won't unlock automatic when the car is placed in park like the rest of the doors. Just not pleased after so many people raved how great Honda is. Well I disagree. Not a fan of Honda. Maybe they will improve something technology wise and interior wise. Can't wait to get rid of this pilot of junk. ( pile of junk) If you want a good car buy a Toyota. Toyota is compatible with any phone for hands free. Toyota dont have cheap plastic and isn't cheaply made. I wish I would have bought another Toyota!

First Honda I ever owned

I have a specific set of needs as I use a power wheelchair to get around: 1. Must have fuel fill on driver's side. 2. Must have a towing receiver for my wheelchair lift. 3. Must have rear glass that opens independently of the hatch. The Honda Pilot checked these boxes and many more. Drives nice, gets good gas mileage, is comfortable, seats 8. I haven't had it long, but I'm already in love with it.

Very Pleased!

We are very happy with this car. Those who see it believe it's brand new and are surprised when we way it's 7 years old and with a great deal of mileage, but Hondas have a very reliable reputation and the dealers, Acura of Wappingers Falls, made sure it was in tip-top shape for us!

Great Reliability, Lacks Power

We purchased our 2013 Honda Pilot new in May 2013. It's the loaded (for it's time) Touring 4x4 with every feature Honda had available. We traded in a 2004 Odyssey that had served us well, despite some transmission issues around 120k miles. We probably should have stuck with a minivan, but my wife was done with the soccer Mom look and wanted an SUV. I realized on our first long trip with the kids that the storage in the Pilot wasn't going to cut it and purchased a rooftop cargo box. I NEVER needed that with the Odyssey. As with most 3-row SUV's, there is just not much room behind that last town (unless you buy a Suburban or Expedition EL). After 7 years of hard use, the vehicle has held up remarkably well. The interior still look good and the paint is glossy with no fade. The car was mostly garage kept will helped. It has been very reliable, other than the front brakes which have suffered repeatedly with warped rotors. I've learned to replace the front brakes myself now to save $$. It's a very simple job really. The interior, especially the front dash, is very plasticky compared to other SUV's in the same class/year but that also lends itself to durability. The only real complaint is engine power. It feels

Great reliable car very comfortable

I like it because of it's exterior style & design. The leather interior is nice cream-colored which complimented the dark dashboard. Performance-wise it's powerful 3.5L engine is very reliable & strong enough to accommodate it's sesring capacity of 8. I love the performance of this car & im going to make it last a long time.
