The 2015 Honda Pilot is a mid-size, three-row SUV that has been a popular choice for families for many years. This generation, spanning model years 2009-2015, offered a practical and spacious design. Key trims include LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring. New, the pricing ranged from approximately $30,000 to $42,000. Its popularity stems from its reputation for reliability, ample cargo space, and comfortable ride, making it ideal for families needing a dependable and versatile vehicle.
The Good

The 2015 Honda Pilot offers a blend of practicality and comfort. It's known for its Honda reliability, appealing to practical buyers. The spacious interior and smooth ride enhance comfort, while the capable V6 engine provides adequate performance. For emotional buyers, it provides a sense of security and family-friendliness, making it a solid value proposition.

The Bad

Some owners have reported issues with the variable timing solenoid and occasional transmission quirks. Rust can be a concern in colder climates, so inspecting the undercarriage is advisable. What Problems Does the 2015 Honda Pilot Have?

The 2015 Honda Pilot generally enjoys a good reputation for reliability, but some common issues have been reported. One frequent concern revolves around the variable timing solenoid, which can sometimes lead to rough idling or decreased engine performance. Some owners have experienced transmission issues, such as slipping or harsh shifting, especially at higher mileages. These issues are not widespread but are worth noting.

Rust, particularly in regions with harsh winter conditions and road salt usage, can be a long-term concern. It's crucial to inspect the undercarriage for rust, especially around suspension components and brake lines.

While specific recalls for the 2015 model year might vary, it's always advisable to check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website for any outstanding recalls related to your specific VIN. Recalls can address safety-related defects, and it's essential to ensure they've been addressed.

In terms of long-term reliability, maintaining the vehicle with regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and timely replacement of wear items (like brakes and tires) is crucial for maximizing its lifespan. Overall, the 2015 Pilot is considered reliable, but addressing potential issues promptly can prevent them from escalating into more significant problems.

How long will the 2015 Honda Pilot last?

With proper maintenance, a 2015 Honda Pilot can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Expecting 10-15 years of service is realistic, assuming consistent maintenance schedules are followed. Long-term durability is a strong point, but weaknesses can emerge over time. Rust, as mentioned previously, is a potential issue. Suspension components, such as struts and bushings, may require replacement after 100,000 miles. Regular fluid changes (transmission, coolant, brake fluid) are crucial for maximizing longevity. The key to long life is proactive maintenance.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 Honda Pilot's tech features are somewhat dated compared to newer vehicles. Base models offer a basic audio system with CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims add features like a touchscreen display, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, and a rearview camera. The EX-L and Touring trims offer optional navigation and a rear-seat entertainment system with a DVD player.

Driver-assistance features are limited compared to modern SUVs. Available features include Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with traction control, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and tire pressure monitoring. Higher trims might include parking sensors.

Safety features include front, side, and side curtain airbags. Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were generally good when new. However, it's essential to consider that crash-test standards have evolved since 2015.

While the 2015 Pilot lacks advanced driver-assistance systems like adaptive cruise control or lane departure warning, its focus on fundamental safety and reliable operation remains a strong point for many buyers. Its dated tech is a compromise for affordability and proven reliability.

2015 Honda Pilot Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2015 Honda Pilot ranged from approximately $30,000 to $42,000 depending on the trim level and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $12,000 to $22,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. The Pilot depreciates at a moderate rate, retaining a decent amount of its value due to its reputation for reliability. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (especially rust), maintenance records, and trim level (Touring trims typically command higher prices). Low mileage and well-maintained examples fetch the highest prices.

2015 Honda Pilot Cost of Ownership

The 2015 Honda Pilot is generally considered economical to own in the long run. Insurance costs are typically moderate for this class of vehicle. Fuel economy is average for a V6-powered SUV. Maintenance costs are reasonable, with Honda parts being readily available and relatively affordable. Regular maintenance can prevent costly repairs. While some repairs may be needed as the vehicle ages, overall, the Pilot's reliability contributes to lower long-term ownership costs compared to some competitors.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2015 Honda Pilot Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2015 Honda Pilot competes with the Toyota Highlander, Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Explorer, and Nissan Pathfinder. In terms of reliability, the Pilot and Highlander are generally considered top performers. The Traverse offers more cargo space but may not match the Pilot's reliability. The Explorer provides sportier handling but can be more expensive to maintain. The Pathfinder offers a more modern interior but has had some reliability concerns.

Regarding features, the Pilot's tech is dated compared to rivals like the Explorer and Pathfinder. However, the Pilot's strength lies in its practical design, comfortable ride, and proven reliability. For buyers prioritizing reliability and a spacious interior, the Pilot and Highlander are excellent choices. If a more modern interior and advanced features are desired, the Ford Explorer or Nissan Pathfinder might be considered, but be mindful of potential reliability tradeoffs. The Toyota Highlander is a very similar and competitive alternative, often considered nearly equivalent in many categories. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities and budget.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 Honda Pilot a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2015 Honda Pilot is an ideal choice for families seeking a reliable, spacious, and practical SUV. It's worth buying, especially on the used market, for those prioritizing reliability and affordability over the latest technology. Lower mileage EX or EX-L trims offer a good balance of features and value. Avoid models with extensive rust. If you need a dependable family hauler and don't require cutting-edge tech, the 2015 Pilot represents a solid and sensible option. Consider a pre-purchase inspection to ensure its mechanical health and longevity. It's a strong contender if reliability and space are your top priorities.

Will Never Love Another!

Have had 4 Hondas. One I put almost 300,00 miles on with no major problems. Will buy more. Handles with ease, plenty of storage. We've had 2 Pilots and 2 Ridgelines.

Great car/ Looked at others/this was the best

Had the car for 5 years and had 59,000 miles. I loved the car and had no mechanical problems. Decided to trade it in to get a newer model while I could get a good amount on the trade-in.

Most reliable car out there. Holds its value well

Tons of room, great MPGs, comfortable. Can't say enough about this vehicle. Would definitely buy another one. Better than the BMW X5 by far. Fun to drive as well.

Very roomy!!

Honda's are always reliable and the added bonus with this car is its compact size yet it's still roomy and seats 8 people. Better than a minivan!!

For a box on wheels, it's as good as it gets

Yes, the black interior is quite sullen and the leather isn't the highest quality. Interior plastics are pretty flat and the front dash is an expanse of seemingly never-ending buttons and switches. But you know what? It just works. My 2014 Pilot Touring 4WD is my second Pilot, the first being a 2008 EX 4WD which is still running like a champ and outside of routine maintenance has only had one 'repair' - a wheel bearing in a dozen years of kid-heavy operation. The 2014 we bought in Jan 2018 used with 30K miles on it as we test drove, and really didn't like at all, the third generation body style which had disconnected steering/lack of road feel, excessive length (they made the third generation narrower and longer to maintain passenger volume, ugh), too soft suspension and minivan-style looks. As for the 2014, it's everything you want out of a family hauler SUV with nothing you don't need. Yes, it's got a backup camera (three angles mind-you including top-down for lining up a hitched trailer), standard tow hitch (great for a bike rack) Honda's venerable 3.5L V6 (not a fan of the cylinder deactivation), heated leather seats, sunroof, and an incredible DVD system. What makes it so incredible? The rear-seat passengers can use wireless headsets to listen to a movie while - wait for it - the front seat passengers can get...silence. No need to use the car's speakers! Oh, it's also plenty wide, our growing boys fit three across with room in the second row and unlike many mid-sized crossovers the third row is quite usable. Now, this second generation Pilot has added some girth and weight over the first generation with a negligible increase in horsepower (maybe 4-5?) so it's definitely slower and the quick, responsive, playful feel from the suspension of the first generation Pilot is, sadly, nowhere to be found. That noted, it will chew up highway miles like no ones business and is quite comfortable, roomy and quiet inside. Sort of like a $50-70K high-priced luxury SUV without the killer price tag or logo inflation. Do I appreciate this second generation Pilot as a do-everything family hauler? Absolutely. Pile it up with sports gear, fishing gear, beach gear, Costco shopping spoils and more with ease. The power tailgate is a nice plus and visibility all around, due to the box, is quite good. If you have little people in your live ages 0-18, this could very well be the perfect family hauler to keep them safe and you sane while protecting your wallet with affordable maintenance and operating expenses - there is a reason we have two Pilots after all. I miss some of the things that made the first generation Pilot unique, the simple, clean, raked lines, the prominent snout, the tight handling and fun acceleration. It wasn't going to take anyone down in the 1/4 mile, but it did like to rev and reminded a driver of Honda's "fun" era and history in Formula 1. This second generation Pilot softened up all the edges, maybe it's just old age sinking in with the second generation, but this seems to have progressed further in the third generation as it's evolved into a 4WD capable minivan. It's sad to see it go that route. While it started out as The Rock - fun, edgy with some family-friendly personality - in the first generation the second-generation Pilot is a bit more sullen and subdued with the third generation Pilot having conceded the fight entirely and accepted it's role as a suburban mall crawler. If you're looking for a mid-sized SUV that still has some flashes of it's youth without the "looks like everything else' egg-like styling that pervaded the mid-sized SUV class, you may find the second generation Pilot to be the sweet spot in the model lineage. Enough modern conveniences to keep you happy while maintaining squared off good looks and plenty of passenger/storage space. As for us, I upgraded the head unit in our 2008 Pilot to an Apple Carplay unit and it's breathed fresh life in the car. Onwards to more Pilot miles and family fun!

Great reliable workhorse

We bought our 2015 Pilot 1 year old in 2016. Pre owned or used is the way to go if you want to save tons of money. I love the old styling more than the 2016-present version. The old one was unique and actually shaped like a box/truck. The new one looks like every other suv out there. They all look alike! We have the mid level EX trim. I think. No leather, moonroof, etc. Just 4WD. It does everything I want and need it to do. Nothing more. It's a mid sized SUV, but like all Hondas, it's actually huge inside. Honda just has a way of packaging its vehicles for max space. It's as roomy or roomier than most large suvs like the Chevy Tahoe or Infinity QX80. It has just about enough power to get going, and not much more. I bought the pilot to be a work car. Hauling large items, gardening, lumber, etc. And in that regard, it's performed flawlessly. I still enjoy looking at it and driving it. I'm in no hurry to get rid of it.
