Rating: 4.51
Based on 72 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2010 Honda Pilot is a mid-size SUV known for its spacious three-row seating and family-friendly features. Part of the second generation (2009-2015), the Pilot offered practicality and reliability. Key trims included LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring. New, it ranged roughly from $28,000 to $40,000. Its popularity stemmed from Honda's reputation for dependability, its roomy interior, and smooth ride.
The Good

The 2010 Pilot boasts strong reliability and a comfortable ride, appealing to practical buyers. Its spacious cabin and family-friendly features provide peace of mind. The V6 engine offers adequate performance. Its design, while not flashy, is functional and durable. This combination delivers strong overall value, fostering confidence and satisfaction.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2010 Honda Pilot include its somewhat bland styling and occasionally clumsy handling. Some owners have reported issues with the variable cylinder management (VCM) system, leading to engine hesitation or oil consumption. Watch for transmission issues, especially with higher mileage examples. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters.

What Problems Does the 2010 Honda Pilot Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2010 Honda Pilot often revolve around the Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system. This system shuts down cylinders to improve fuel economy, but can lead to excessive oil consumption, engine hesitation, and vibrations. Some owners have reported spark plug fouling and catalytic converter issues related to VCM.

Transmission problems, particularly slipping or rough shifting, can arise at higher mileages. Power steering pump failures have also been reported. Rust, especially on the undercarriage and around the rear wheel wells, is a long-term concern, especially in regions with road salt use.

Recalls for the 2010 Pilot have included issues with the power steering hose and the fuel tank. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls before purchasing. Long-term reliability can be affected by neglected maintenance, so a thorough inspection and service history review are crucial.

While the 2010 model year is generally reliable, addressing VCM-related symptoms early and maintaining diligent fluid changes can mitigate some of these long-term concerns. Some owners opt to disable the VCM system with aftermarket devices to prevent related problems.

How long will the 2010 Honda Pilot last?

With proper maintenance, a 2010 Honda Pilot can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, potentially lasting 15 years or longer. Regular oil changes, transmission servicing, and timely replacement of wear items are essential. However, weaknesses such as VCM-related engine issues and potential transmission problems can shorten lifespan if not addressed. Rust prevention is also critical in northern climates. Neglecting these areas can significantly reduce its lifespan and overall reliability.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Honda Pilot included standard tech like a basic audio system with CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems, including satellite radio and a rear entertainment system with a DVD player. Optional features included a navigation system.

Driver-assistance features were limited for this model year. Some trims included rear parking sensors. Safety features included standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), and multiple airbags, including side curtain airbags for all three rows.

Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were generally good. The 2010 Pilot received top ratings in several crash tests, contributing to its reputation as a safe family vehicle.

However, modern driver-assistance features like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control were not available on the 2010 Pilot. Its technology suite, while functional for its time, is dated compared to newer vehicles. A rearview camera was only available on higher trims and with the navigation system option.

2010 Honda Pilot Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2010 Honda Pilot ranged from approximately $28,000 to $40,000 depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $7,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Pilot has depreciated significantly, but Honda's reputation for reliability helps maintain resale value. Factors like a clean title, low mileage, documented maintenance history, and absence of rust significantly impact the asking price.

2010 Honda Pilot Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2010 Honda Pilot are typically moderate. Fuel costs can be relatively high, especially with the 4WD model. Maintenance is generally affordable, with readily available parts and a straightforward design. However, potential repairs related to the VCM system or transmission can be expensive. Overall, the 2010 Pilot is moderately economical to own, but budgeting for potential repairs is wise.

2010 Honda Pilot Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Honda Pilot is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Honda Pilot Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2010 Honda Pilot competed with the Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Traverse, and Nissan Pathfinder. The Pilot offered similar performance to the Highlander but lagged slightly behind in terms of fuel economy. The Explorer provided a more truck-like feel, while the Traverse offered more cargo space. The Pathfinder generally had lower reliability ratings compared to the Pilot.

In terms of features, the Pilot was competitive but lacked some of the newer tech found in later model years of its rivals. Price-wise, the Pilot was generally in line with its competitors.

Alternatives to the 2010 Pilot include the Toyota Highlander, which offers comparable reliability and a more refined interior. The Mazda CX-9, while smaller, provides a more engaging driving experience. If cargo space is a priority, the Chevrolet Traverse could be considered. However, for overall balance of reliability, space, and value, the 2010 Pilot remains a solid choice, especially if a well-maintained example can be found at a good price.

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Honda Pilot a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2010 Honda Pilot is ideal for families needing a spacious and reliable three-row SUV. It's worth buying used if you prioritize practicality, dependability, and cargo capacity over the latest technology or sporty handling. Look for well-maintained examples with documented service history, preferably those that have had VCM-related issues addressed. Higher trims like EX-L or Touring offer more desirable features, but even the base LX provides a functional and reliable option. Ensure a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic to assess potential problems.

Problems with cylinder cutoff engine.

Sadly, the Honda Pilot with the variable cylinder cutoff system, is an unmitigated disaster in my experience. This engine has had major breakdowns 3 times, and should have been recalled. It is a shame, as otherwise it is a great car. Would only buy a normally aspirated 4 cylinder Honda (if any Honda) in the future.

Love it

Full size room but feels like a mid size SUV. Able to transport two large dog crates. Gets good gas mileage. I would buy another one.

Great, confortable and reliable vehicle

Drives nice, engine has good power, very confortable, very reliable, Nice fit, finish and loaded, great price range for a fantastic SUV. The vehicle drives very smooth and the EX-L has a lot of nice amenities and basically fully loaded with dual air, sunroof, roof rack, AWD, power everything, Third row seats, great back gate space and storage!

Very functional and reliable, this year burned oil

Great family car, has a lot of interior space For the size and everything is functional. This year burned oil which was frustrating but I am a fan of the line.

Logan Day picked the BEST car for me.

Will take me a while to master all the tech features, but the driving is a dream. Has room for my buddies AND my gear.

Love my Pilot!!! This is the 2nd one I've owned!

This car is perfect for larger families and it is a smooth ride! This is our 2nd one and we wouldn't go for any other brand!

Most reliable vehicle I have owned.

This vehicle with its available four wheel drive system is awesome in poor winter driving conditions. It is also very safe vehicle to travel in. Big car ride in a smaller sized SUV. Very dependable, 3rd Honda we have owned.

My 04 was better..

I've owned my Honda Pilot for 6 years and have taken great care of it but it hasn't really taken care of me. It's had several problems. I now have oil disappearing inside somewhere for the second time but it's a $3000 fix that's just probably not worth fixing at this point. I've already "fixed" it once... The interior is coming apart everywhere. Peeling and tearing. I wish I had never upgraded and had just stuck with my 04.
