The Good
The 2010 Pilot boasts strong reliability and a comfortable ride, appealing to practical buyers. Its spacious cabin and family-friendly features provide peace of mind. The V6 engine offers adequate performance. Its design, while not flashy, is functional and durable. This combination delivers strong overall value, fostering confidence and satisfaction.
The Bad
Weaknesses of the 2010 Honda Pilot include its somewhat bland styling and occasionally clumsy handling. Some owners have reported issues with the variable cylinder management (VCM) system, leading to engine hesitation or oil consumption. Watch for transmission issues, especially with higher mileage examples. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters.

What Problems Does the 2010 Honda Pilot Have?
Transmission problems, particularly slipping or rough shifting, can arise at higher mileages. Power steering pump failures have also been reported. Rust, especially on the undercarriage and around the rear wheel wells, is a long-term concern, especially in regions with road salt use.
Recalls for the 2010 Pilot have included issues with the power steering hose and the fuel tank. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls before purchasing. Long-term reliability can be affected by neglected maintenance, so a thorough inspection and service history review are crucial.
While the 2010 model year is generally reliable, addressing VCM-related symptoms early and maintaining diligent fluid changes can mitigate some of these long-term concerns. Some owners opt to disable the VCM system with aftermarket devices to prevent related problems.
How long will the 2010 Honda Pilot last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features were limited for this model year. Some trims included rear parking sensors. Safety features included standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), and multiple airbags, including side curtain airbags for all three rows.
Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were generally good. The 2010 Pilot received top ratings in several crash tests, contributing to its reputation as a safe family vehicle.
However, modern driver-assistance features like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control were not available on the 2010 Pilot. Its technology suite, while functional for its time, is dated compared to newer vehicles. A rearview camera was only available on higher trims and with the navigation system option.

How Does the 2010 Honda Pilot Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?
In terms of features, the Pilot was competitive but lacked some of the newer tech found in later model years of its rivals. Price-wise, the Pilot was generally in line with its competitors.
Alternatives to the 2010 Pilot include the Toyota Highlander, which offers comparable reliability and a more refined interior. The Mazda CX-9, while smaller, provides a more engaging driving experience. If cargo space is a priority, the Chevrolet Traverse could be considered. However, for overall balance of reliability, space, and value, the 2010 Pilot remains a solid choice, especially if a well-maintained example can be found at a good price.

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Honda Pilot a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

Problems with cylinder cutoff engine.Sadly, the Honda Pilot with the variable cylinder cutoff system, is an unmitigated disaster in my experience. This engine has had major breakdowns 3 times, and should have been recalled. It is a shame, as otherwise it is a great car. Would only buy a normally aspirated 4 cylinder Honda (if any Honda) in the future.

Love itFull size room but feels like a mid size SUV. Able to transport two large dog crates. Gets good gas mileage. I would buy another one.

Most reliable vehicle I have owned. This vehicle with its available four wheel drive system is awesome in poor winter driving conditions. It is also very safe vehicle to travel in. Big car ride in a smaller sized SUV. Very dependable, 3rd Honda we have owned.

My 04 was better..I've owned my Honda Pilot for 6 years and have taken great care of it but it hasn't really taken care of me. It's had several problems. I now have oil disappearing inside somewhere for the second time but it's a $3000 fix that's just probably not worth fixing at this point. I've already "fixed" it once... The interior is coming apart everywhere. Peeling and tearing. I wish I had never upgraded and had just stuck with my 04.
