Rating: 4.56
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2012 Honda Pilot is a mid-size SUV known for its practicality and family-friendly features. Part of the second generation (2009-2015), it offers a spacious three-row cabin and a reputation for reliability. Key trims include LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring. New, it ranged from approximately $29,000 to $40,000. Its popularity stems from its comfortable ride, ample cargo space, and Honda's renowned dependability. It's a utilitarian choice for those prioritizing function over flash.
The Good

The 2012 Honda Pilot boasts strong reliability and a comfortable ride, appealing to practical buyers. Its spacious cabin and ample cargo room are ideal for families. Performance is adequate for daily driving. While not sporty, the Pilot offers a sense of security and dependability, fostering an emotional connection for those prioritizing safety and peace of mind. It's a pragmatic and reassuring choice.

The Bad

The 2012 Honda Pilot's weaknesses include its somewhat bland styling and average fuel economy compared to some competitors. The infotainment system is dated. Some owners have reported issues with the variable cylinder management (VCM) system, leading to potential oil consumption problems and vibrations. Transmission issues can also arise, requiring careful inspection and maintenance.

What Problems Does the 2012 Honda Pilot Have?

The 2012 Honda Pilot has some frequently reported problems. The most common concern involves the Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system. This system shuts down cylinders to improve fuel economy, but it can lead to excessive oil consumption, spark plug fouling, and engine vibrations. Some owners have reported the need for costly repairs to address these VCM-related issues. Another area of concern is the automatic transmission. Some owners have experienced rough shifting, slipping, or complete transmission failure, especially at higher mileages. Check engine lights related to emissions control systems are also relatively common. While the 2012 model year hasn't had a significant number of recalls, it's advisable to check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website for any outstanding recalls related to safety. Long-term reliability can be affected by proper maintenance, particularly regular oil changes and transmission fluid flushes, to mitigate the potential VCM and transmission problems. Thorough inspection and a pre-purchase inspection are recommended before buying a used 2012 Pilot.

How long will the 2012 Honda Pilot last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 Honda Pilot can easily reach 200,000 miles or more and provide 10-15 years of service. However, long-term durability heavily depends on adherence to the maintenance schedule. The VCM system, if not properly maintained, can lead to increased oil consumption and engine wear over time. Transmission issues can also become more prevalent with age. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires are crucial for maximizing the vehicle's lifespan. Neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan and lead to costly repairs.

The HONDA mystic didn't work for me! This vehicle is “Garbage”. Dealer and Corporate Service is the worst. If I had a do-over I would have returned under the Lemon Law”. Honda Corporate and Dealer are “deceitful” and don't respond or care about the customer. Honda is bad news. I will NEVER own anther Honda product!!!😬. STAY AWAY. - NOT RECOMMENDED!!!!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Honda Pilot's tech features are relatively basic compared to modern SUVs. Standard features include a rearview camera, a seven-speaker audio system with a CD player, and an auxiliary audio input jack. Higher trims offer features like a USB port, satellite radio, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a sunroof. The EX-L and Touring trims offered optional features such as a navigation system and a rear-seat entertainment system. Driver-assistance features are limited, mainly consisting of standard antilock brakes, stability control, and traction control. No advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking were available. Safety features include front, side, and side curtain airbags. Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are generally good. The 2012 Pilot received an overall score of 4 out of 5 stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2012 Pilot a "Good" rating in most crash tests. However, the available technology and driver-assistance features are dated compared to newer vehicles, making it less appealing for tech-savvy buyers.

2012 Honda Pilot Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Honda Pilot had a MSRP range of approximately $29,000 to $40,000 depending on the trim level and options. As of late 2023/early 2024, used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Pilot has depreciated significantly due to its age. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and the specific trim level. Models with lower mileage, a clean title, and documented maintenance records command higher prices. Higher trims like the Touring, especially those with navigation and rear entertainment systems, tend to retain slightly better value. However, potential buyers should be aware of potential issues like VCM and transmission problems, which can negatively impact resale value.

2012 Honda Pilot Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Honda Pilot falls in the average range for insurance costs compared to other mid-size SUVs. Fuel costs are moderate, given its fuel economy ratings. Maintenance costs are generally reasonable, thanks to Honda's reliability; however, potential repairs related to the VCM system and transmission can significantly increase long-term ownership expenses. Regular maintenance is crucial. Overall, the 2012 Pilot is not the most economical choice, especially if significant repairs are needed. Budgeting for potential VCM and transmission issues is advisable.

2012 Honda Pilot Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Honda Pilot is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Honda Pilot Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2012 Honda Pilot competes with vehicles like the Toyota Highlander, Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Explorer, and Nissan Pathfinder. In terms of reliability, the Pilot is comparable to the Highlander, both boasting strong reputations. The Traverse offers more cargo space but lags in reliability. The Explorer offers a sportier driving experience, while the Pathfinder provides a more modern interior. The Pilot's performance is adequate, but not exceptional, trailing the Explorer's available V6 engine. Feature-wise, the Pilot is dated compared to its rivals, particularly in technology and driver-assistance systems. Used prices are generally similar across these models, depending on condition and mileage. If reliability is the top priority, the Toyota Highlander is a strong alternative. For more space and features, consider a newer Chevrolet Traverse or Buick Enclave. If a sportier driving experience is desired, the Ford Explorer is worth considering. Ultimately, the best alternative depends on individual needs and priorities. For pure value, a well-maintained Toyota Highlander may be a better choice.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Honda Pilot a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2012 Honda Pilot is ideal for families seeking a reliable and spacious mid-size SUV with three-row seating. It's a decent used car option if properly maintained and thoroughly inspected. It's worth buying if you prioritize reliability and practicality over modern tech features. Focus on finding a well-maintained model with documented service history. Be prepared for potential VCM or transmission issues. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial. Avoid models with excessive mileage or signs of neglect. The EX or EX-L trims offer a good balance of features and value in the used market. Consider alternatives like a Toyota Highlander if maximum reliability is your primary concern.

USA should develop better car to dump Honda.

Honda dealers are khakis and due to amount of business they are getting from USA, they don't care about quality and customer service post sales. When it's comes to comfortness, 2012 Pilot is sold as eight seater but that last row is for the passengers who must be less than 5' toll and must not weight more than 100 LBS. Last/third row do not get sufficient amount of air flow. Maintenance with dealer is very expensive. There is no TPLS reset switch and any issue with it cost you serious amount of money.

Honda - Pilot - CRV - Odyssey

Vehicle covers our needs for towing the family fishing boat. Great for winter driving in our region. This model year cargo space is better than many of the other SUV's available.

I've owned Hondas for over two decades now. I honestly have trouble trusting any other make of vehicle. The Pilot has been our go to vehicle since we had a family. Nothing says "comfortable" & "reliable" like a beautiful Honda Pilot!

Only car I will drive other than my great outback

I love HONDA Pilot almost as much as my Outback. Drives great and the interior leather is the only option to have because do easy to clean

Biggest piece of SH*T I've ever owned!

So far it is excellent

I replaced my 2005 Honda Pilot with this one. It is as comfortable as my old ombre and runs great. It accelerates well and is a comfortable ride. I'm looking forward to putting a couple of hundred thousand miles on it.
