Rating: 4.56
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2011 Honda Pilot is a mid-size SUV known for its spacious three-row seating and family-friendly features. Part of the second generation (2009-2015), it offered practicality and reliability. Key trims included LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring. Its popularity stemmed from its reputation for dependability, ample cargo space, and comfortable ride. New, the pricing ranged roughly from $28,000 to $38,000. It stands out for its ability to comfortably transport up to eight passengers.
The Good

The 2011 Honda Pilot boasts exceptional reliability, making it a smart choice for practical buyers. Its spacious interior and comfortable ride appeal to those seeking family comfort. The V6 engine offers adequate performance, while the Honda name ensures good resale value. For emotional buyers, the Pilot provides peace of mind and a sense of security for their family.

The Bad

The 2011 Honda Pilot's weaknesses include a somewhat dated interior design and average fuel economy for its class. Some owners have reported issues with the variable cylinder management (VCM) system, which can lead to engine vibrations or oil consumption. Suspension components and the automatic transmission should be inspected for wear and tear, particularly on higher-mileage examples.

What Problems Does the 2011 Honda Pilot Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2011 Honda Pilot often revolve around the Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system. This system, designed to improve fuel economy, can sometimes cause excessive oil consumption and engine vibrations, especially in models where it's malfunctioning. Some owners have reported needing to replace engine mounts to mitigate vibrations.
Another area of concern is the automatic transmission. While generally reliable, some owners have experienced issues such as slipping or harsh shifting, particularly at higher mileages. Regular transmission fluid changes are crucial to prevent these issues.
Recalls for the 2011 Honda Pilot have included issues related to airbags and potential fuel leakage. Checking the vehicle's VIN on the NHTSA website will reveal any outstanding recalls that need to be addressed.
Long-term reliability concerns also include potential issues with the power steering system and the air conditioning compressor. Regular maintenance, including timely fluid changes and inspections, can help mitigate these potential problems.
Overall, the 2011 Pilot is generally considered reliable, but potential buyers should be aware of these common issues and ensure a thorough inspection is performed before purchase.

How long will the 2011 Honda Pilot last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2011 Honda Pilot can easily surpass 200,000 miles or provide 15+ years of service. Owners who adhere to scheduled maintenance, including oil changes, transmission fluid replacements, and regular inspections, often report exceptional longevity. However, neglecting maintenance, especially regarding the VCM system and transmission, can significantly shorten its lifespan. Weaknesses over time include potential rust in regions with harsh winters and wear and tear on suspension components. The VCM system, if not properly maintained, can lead to increased oil consumption over time.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2011 Honda Pilot offers a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard tech includes an AM/FM/CD audio system with auxiliary input, while higher trims offer an upgraded audio system with satellite radio. Available entertainment features include a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, enhancing long trips for passengers.
Driver-assistance features are relatively basic, primarily consisting of standard cruise control. Safety features include anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, traction control, and a suite of airbags, including front, side, and curtain airbags. Higher trims may include a rearview camera system.
Optional features, depending on the trim level, include a navigation system with voice recognition and a multi-information display. The EX-L and Touring trims offer leather upholstery and heated front seats, enhancing comfort.
In terms of crash-test ratings, the 2011 Honda Pilot performed well. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it a 4-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) awarded the Pilot its "Top Safety Pick" designation, indicating good performance in crash tests. These ratings reflect the Pilot's commitment to safety, making it a family-friendly choice.

2011 Honda Pilot Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2011 Honda Pilot ranged from approximately $28,000 for the base LX model to around $38,000 for the top-tier Touring trim. As of today, used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Pilot has experienced significant depreciation, as expected for a vehicle of its age. However, its strong reputation for reliability helps maintain its resale value compared to some competitors. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (interior and exterior), maintenance history, and geographic location. Models with complete service records and lower mileage command higher prices.

2011 Honda Pilot Cost of Ownership

The 2011 Honda Pilot's long-term ownership costs are generally moderate. Insurance rates are typically average for a mid-size SUV. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with the 4WD model, due to its lower fuel economy. Maintenance is generally affordable, thanks to Honda's reliability, but potential repairs related to the VCM system or transmission can add up. Overall, the Pilot is not the most economical vehicle to own, but its reliability helps keep repair costs manageable.

2011 Honda Pilot Insurance

Insurance for a 2011 Honda Pilot is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2011 Honda Pilot Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2011 Honda Pilot competes with vehicles like the Toyota Highlander, Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Explorer, and Nissan Pathfinder. Compared to the Highlander, the Pilot offers similar reliability and interior space, but the Highlander might have a slight edge in fuel economy. The Traverse boasts more cargo space but may not match the Pilot's reliability. The Explorer, especially in later model years, offered a more modern driving experience but at the cost of potentially lower reliability compared to the Pilot.
In terms of features, the Pilot's technology is somewhat dated compared to some rivals. However, its reputation for reliability and practicality remains a strong selling point. Price-wise, the Pilot generally holds its value well, but used examples are often priced competitively with its rivals.
Alternatives to the 2011 Honda Pilot could include the 2011 Toyota Highlander for similar reliability and a slightly more refined driving experience. If cargo space is a priority, the Chevrolet Traverse might be a better choice, but be mindful of its reliability record. If a more modern driving experience is desired, later model year Ford Explorers (post-2011) could be considered, but with careful attention to maintenance records.

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 Honda Pilot a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2011 Honda Pilot is ideal for families seeking a reliable and spacious three-row SUV. It's worth buying, especially used, if you prioritize dependability and practicality over cutting-edge technology. The EX and EX-L trims offer a good balance of features and value. Before purchasing, have a mechanic inspect the vehicle for potential VCM system issues and transmission wear. If reliability and passenger space are paramount, a well-maintained 2011 Pilot remains a solid choice. Consider a pre-purchase inspection to avoid costly repairs down the road.

I work at a car dealership in VA.

I work at a car dealership in VA. A customer traded in their 2011 Honda Pilot EX-L with a little over 185k miles on it. I bought it two weeks ago from our wholesale lot and it's been amazing. I can tell the previous owner kept really good care of it but also the comfortability of the vehicle and the reliability really caught my eye. I have another vehicle I drive but this deal I couldn't pass up. Best vehicle I've ever owned even with 186k on it. It has everything I wanted and the space is great for me and my 2 year old black lab. Buy one if you can find a good deal - they are soooo worth it!!!!

220,000 miles and still going

We bought this new in October of 2010, and have had it since, ever 100k have done the timing belt, never missed oil changes. Have some every recommended maintenance done, and she's now got 220k miles. Right about 200k mark the power steering pump started making noises, so changed it, was really easy to change. Then the alternator went out, which was harder to change, but did it. Can't complain 1 bit. My wife loves her pilot and says she's going to drive it until the doors fall off 😂. Been through few sets of brakes, few sets of tires, 3 rear sets of shocks, and few other wear and tear items. Interior has held up great, drivers seat has not torn (my wife is tiny) but you can see wear on it, but for 13-14 years of ownership, it can clean up really nice. Only thing is we got the pilot rust spot on the tailgate by the chrome trim, that was repaired once and has now came back.

They don't make'em like this anymore.

Best I ever owned. Bought in April of 2010, 1st 2011 to hit the dealership. Touring model with real 4wheel drive, a rear window that opens w/defrost and side windows that defrost, a 6 CD changer with a video for the rear seat folks. Factory installed trailer pckg. with wiring, transmission oil cooler, heavy duty battery and a full size spare tire. They don't make them like that anymore. Only Honda has ever put a wrench to that vehicle and 3500 mile interval on oil changes. (I'm old school) In Arizona we go thru batteries like changing socks. On the 3rd set of Michelins after 132000 miles. I'd buy another today if I could get the same setup and options.

Love it!!!

We bought our 2011 Touring in 2019 with 37000 miles on it. We love it! It now has 91000 miles and runs like new! Of course with gas prices so high it would be nice if it got a bit better gas mileage. We average 18.5 mpg but the comfort and dependability outweigh the cost!

Solid as a rock

Purchased with 88K miles in 2014. It's the most reliable vehicle I've owned. I still drive it daily and it's running strong with 253K. Handles great and is pretty fun to drive. I'm 6'3” and find it very comfortable for my daily commute of 66 miles round trip. Gets about 17.5 mpg combined.

The perfect big family car!

This car fit my family, my dogs and our friends. It was what I needed in 2011 and it ran great for 200k miles. It is time for Honda to create a Hybrid Pilot!
