This model of subi has been great, outside of the factory warranty 2.5L engine replacement. Quick and responsive with the 5 speed. The automatic leaves a bit to be desired. Almost 9 inches of ground clearance is Jeep territory and the AWD system inspires confidence in rain, snow and mud.

We bought this car new from the dealership and the first thing to break was the rear view mirror, it completely fell off. The second thing to break is the a piece on the shocks. Third thing to break was the USB port and the fourth thing to break on the car is the transmission. My car has 39,000 miles on it and I'm ready to sell it.

This is just for informational purposes. The 2013 may turn out to be a reliable vehicle. However to the person who wrote why would anyone buy anything else I suggest you do a search on "Subaru Head Gasket Problem". Even Consumer Reports (who love Subaru) finally admitted in the April edition that '03-07 Subaru's have a high incidence of failure. This was supposed to have been corrected after 2002 but as the cars keep aging the goal posts keep moving. A Subaru technician told me it is inherent in the design. Subaru came out with a "conditioner" that you add to the anti-freeze that is supposed to prolong the life of the gaskets. If I were being cynical I would say that Subaru made this a mandatory requirement so that the gaskets would just squeak over 100,000 miles at which point a Subaru of America rep will tell you that "we think at some point the customer needs to take possession of their car". Guess who a rep said that too. The first failure I experienced was right at 60,000 miles when the transmission pan started leaking. At 65,000 miles the crank seal started leaking oil. That seal is in the engine and took 4 hours of labor to replace. At 90,000 miles the valve cover gaskets and spark plug seals had to be replaced. Now? Guess what needs replacing at costs approaching $2000. This is an '04, by the way. Subaru has introduced a redesigned boxer engine in this car. It has separate cooling passages for the block and heads which is supposed to help address the head gasket issue. Time will tell. A word to the wise. I just don't know how many competitive brands need major engine work at 100,000 miles and I am including the domestic brands. Anyhow, it is worth doing the search. Good Luck!

I bought my Subaru in 2023 because it only had 60,000

I bought my Subaru in 2023 because it only had 60,000 miles on the OD. It's the minimal 2.5X model, but I couldn't pass up the car at such a low price. After driving it for over a year, I put only 6000 miles on it. I took it to the Subaru dealer for NY state inspection, and had the brakes replaced, and paid for the 60000 mi Subaru recommended service. I love this car, especially since I can connect my iPod to the blue tooth and play my music library. It is a bit noisy on the highway, but it's not the luxury model, so that's expected. The Subaru dealer said everything on the car was real solid. So far it has been very dependable, and easy to drive in the snow. It has no leaks, no dents, no squeaks, no problems. I've owned and driven 8 Subaru's over the past 40 years, and I'm hoping to keep my 2013 model and drive it for at least another 10 years.

2013 subaru forester xt touring

I owned this car and never had a bit of trouble with it regular maintenance is required i even upgraded many things on this car great car. I was not in an accident with it, a guy ramed it with a shopping cart and went down the side and scratched it all up i turned into ins and had it fixed great car fun car to drive and it turned many heads

Poorly engineered. Problems ahead for you.

We had lots of trouble with ours and we met a lot of other owners who had trouble with oil leaks and engine replacements. When they work, they are nice cars that make a lot of sense in a lot of different ways. The engineering is just really bad.

No - Don't go 2013 Subaru

After 40-50 thousand miles it will start consuming so much oil that you have to add oil every 1000 miles or so to keep it running without blowing a piston rod. Had to replace an engine in this car at 80k miles and that engine died from similar issues 2 years later. Not worth the headache. 2013 Forrester is the worst year to buy.

Engine blew up 60 k

I’m not a foreign car person...but I got stuck with this thing and I tried to make the best of it..I’m a avid outdoorsman and the forester seemed like it would do well...but my engine threw a rod with 60,000 miles..I change my oil on time always and I handle all scheduled maintenance on time..the replacement engine is extremely expensive Vs an American motor...I wish I wasn’t stuck with this PoS

Multiple known problems two few recalls. Subaru USA is well aware of multiple problems in this vehicle, the Subaru Forrester 2013. Oil consumption is high ultimately causing engine failure. Class action lawsuits have been bought against Subaru USA regarding gaskets in this vehicle which are the reason for engine loss of oil. They paid out a Class action lawsuit to members without admission of guilt. Other vehicles which qualified for this lawsuit but not registered as a member were left with vehicles with which were not recalled for repair. Ultimately my vehicle left me stalled in the middle of the freeway after only 1200 miles since my last oil change.
