Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2016 Chevrolet Equinox is a compact SUV that has been a popular choice for families and individuals alike since its initial release. It offers a blend of practicality, comfort, and affordability. The 2016 model year is part of the second generation. Key trims include the L, LS, LT, and LTZ. Pricing typically ranged from around $23,000 to $32,000 when new, though used prices are considerably lower. Its spacious interior and comfortable ride are often cited as reasons for its popularity.
The Good

The 2016 Chevrolet Equinox offers a comfortable ride and a spacious cabin, appealing to those seeking practicality. Its available V6 engine provides decent performance. While not known for groundbreaking design, its straightforward aesthetic is inoffensive. It provides good value for money, especially on the used market. Some find the Equinox emotionally appealing due to its reliability and family-friendly nature.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox include its fuel economy with the V6 engine, which can be lower than competitors. The base four-cylinder engine can feel underpowered, especially when fully loaded. Some owners have reported issues with excessive oil consumption. The interior materials, while functional, can feel dated compared to newer rivals.

What Problems Does the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox Have?

The 2016 Chevrolet Equinox has some frequently reported problems that potential buyers should be aware of. One of the most common issues is excessive oil consumption, particularly with the 2.4L engine. This can lead to engine damage if not monitored and addressed promptly. Some owners have reported problems with the timing chain, also often linked to the 2.4L engine and low oil levels. Other reported issues include problems with the air conditioning system, specifically the compressor.
Recalls for the 2016 Equinox have included issues related to the windshield wiper motor potentially failing, and a potential for the front lower control arm to fracture, which could lead to a crash. Check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the most up-to-date recall information.
Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the longevity of the 2.4L engine, given the oil consumption issues. Regular maintenance and monitoring of oil levels are crucial. The transmission is generally considered reliable, but proper servicing is still important. Overall, the 2016 Equinox can be a reliable vehicle, but addressing potential issues proactively is essential.

How long will the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox last?

A 2016 Chevrolet Equinox, with good maintenance, can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. However, the longevity highly depends on maintenance habits. Regular oil changes (especially crucial for the 2.4L engine), timely servicing of the transmission, and addressing issues promptly are key. Weaknesses over time often relate to the aforementioned oil consumption problem. Suspension components and general wear-and-tear items like brakes and tires will also require attention as the vehicle ages. Corrosion can also be a factor in areas with harsh winters.

Nicely designed inside and out. Much mote cargo space than I thought it would have. It passed the road trip test too.. I have no complaints about it.

Negative Owner Reviews
DisappointedAgain
Enjoyed it for the 10k miles I got out of it. Then the awful design caught up with me. Takes 2 hours to change the battery because they designed it so you have to take several other pieces off to get to the battery slot. Then electrical system went, followed quickly by being told I had to replace the entire engine for $12k. Never buying American again.
Barbara Holloman
I really had no problems with the Equinox it until the power steering had only 23,000. Why is this happening. I am curious. Help me.
Earlene
Never got to have the car I bought for more than 2 hours. Picked it up and gave it back 2 hours later and that was over 3 weeks ago! Completely unable to drive-“transmission” in the end (I think-still waiting) but torque converter replaced and still bad. No desire to own this car and no faith in purchasing anything right now! Total buyers remorse UGH

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Chevrolet Equinox offers a reasonable level of technology for its time. Standard features include a rearview camera, keyless entry, and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system (MyLink) in the higher trims. The MyLink system provides smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (depending on the specific version).
Entertainment features include available satellite radio and a premium audio system. Driver-assistance features, mainly available on the LTZ trim, include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane departure warning. However, advanced safety features like automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control were not available on this model.
Safety features include standard antilock brakes, stability control, and a suite of airbags. The 2016 Chevrolet Equinox received good crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and the NHTSA, although specific ratings may vary depending on the testing agency and criteria. It's recommended to consult the official IIHS and NHTSA websites for detailed crash-test results.
Optional features vary depending on the trim level and include things such as a sunroof, navigation, and upgraded wheels.

2016 Chevrolet Equinox Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox had an MSRP ranging from approximately $23,000 to $32,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of today's date, used market prices typically range from around $8,000 to $15,000, but this can vary based on condition, mileage, and location. The Equinox has experienced significant depreciation, which is typical for vehicles in this class. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, accident history, and the presence of desirable features like the V6 engine and all-wheel drive. The 2.4L engine's reputation for oil consumption can negatively impact resale value.

2016 Chevrolet Equinox Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Chevrolet Equinox generally falls into the average range for insurance costs for its class. Fuel costs depend heavily on the engine choice, with the 2.4L being more economical than the V6. Maintenance costs are generally moderate, but potential repairs related to the 2.4L engine can increase long-term ownership expenses. Overall, the Equinox isn't exceptionally economical or costly to own, but diligent maintenance is crucial to avoid potentially expensive repairs.

It's worth buying, particularly on the used market, if you're aware of its potential weaknesses, especially the 2.4L engine's oil consumption. Engine completely burns oil with NO warning.

Why isn’t there a recall for the engine burning up oil and then the engine getting completely ruined? I’m not the only one this has happened to either. Once is an accident, twice is coincidence. It’s 6500 to get a new one. That’s money I don’t have. I’m a single mom and now I’m out of a car and no way to get anywhere. I depended on my car. A lot. Highly upset.

No regales tu dinero.

What happened to Chevy

I like Chevy. The Equinox made me feel safe, I like the size, the way it handles the road, very comfortable ride,it's a good expensive looking auto until the paint falls off, it burns up oil,the seals are no good, you end up afraid to drive it with the noise under the hood. The pistons rap, timing belt comes loose, then the cam & crank shaft dont sync together, repair all that & the motor blows. Why do you continue to put this on the market?I am very, very disapointed. You totally get ripped off from Chevy with this one. Recall them. Im afraid to put my 93 yr old Mother & two granddaughters in it for fear of breaking down.

Terrible vehicle

I purchased this vehicle in November 2021 at 80,000 miles. It has 82,000 miles on it now. This vehicle was suppose to be my daily driver. It has been in the auto shop over 10 times. This is the worse car I have ever owned. I've had a lot of cars in my life. I thought Chevrolets were good cars. This one must have came from another planet.
