2004 Ford F-150 Review: One of the Best Model Years for One of the Best Used Pickups

Rating: 4.46
Based on 112 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2004 Ford F-150 marked a significant redesign, launching the eleventh generation of this iconic truck. Available in Regular, SuperCab (extended), and SuperCrew (crew cab) body styles, it offered a wide range of choices. Key trims included the XL, STX, XLT, FX4, Lariat, and King Ranch. New, prices ranged from approximately $22,000 to $38,000 depending on the configuration. Its bold new styling, improved ride, and increased capability made it a popular choice.
The Good

The 2004 F-150 boasted improved performance with new engine options and a more robust chassis. Its bold design appeals emotionally, while its comfortable interior and increased payload/towing capacity serve practical needs. While not the most fuel-efficient, it offered good value for its capabilities and overall reliability.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2004 F-150 include spark plug issues with the 5.4L engine, which can be prone to breaking during removal. Also, watch for rust, especially in areas with road salt. Some owners have reported issues with the electronic door locks and window regulators. Overall reliability is generally good but preventative maintenance is essential.

What Problems Does the 2004 Ford F-150 Have?

Frequently reported problems with the 2004 Ford F-150 often revolve around the 5.4L Triton engine. A common issue is spark plug failure, sometimes resulting in plugs breaking during removal due to their two-piece design. This can be a costly repair. Other concerns include:
  • Electronic issues: Malfunctioning door locks and window regulators are not uncommon.
  • Rust: Rust, particularly in areas with heavy road salt usage, can be a significant long-term concern. Check the undercarriage, bed, and body panels carefully.
  • Fuel pump issues: Some owners have reported fuel pump failures.
  • Transmission issues: While generally reliable, the automatic transmission can experience issues in higher-mileage examples.

Recalls for the 2004 F-150 have addressed issues such as potential fuel leakage from the fuel tank and problems with the speed control system that could lead to unintended acceleration. Check the NHTSA website for a comprehensive list of recalls related to this model year. Long-term reliability largely depends on maintenance. Neglecting regular servicing can exacerbate the aforementioned issues, leading to more expensive repairs down the line. Proper care, especially regarding the engine and rust prevention, is crucial for extending the life of a 2004 F-150.

How long will the 2004 Ford F-150 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2004 Ford F-150 can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, translating to 15-20 years of service. However, mileage and lifespan are heavily dependent on maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes, transmission services, and addressing minor repairs promptly will significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan. Long-term durability is generally good, but weaknesses include rust susceptibility (especially in northern climates) and potential issues with the 5.4L engine's spark plugs. Regular fluid checks and preventative maintenance are essential to maximize longevity.
Positive Owner Reviews
John S.
Bought this truck used a few years ago. It's been very reliable mechanically. The engine is strong and it tows well. The only real issue is rust starting to appear on the body, which is expected for a truck of this age in the Northeast.
Sarah M.
This truck is a workhorse! I use it for hauling supplies for my small business, and it hasn't let me down. Gas mileage isn't great, but that's to be expected with a truck this size. Overall, a great value.
Emily R.
I've owned this truck for over 10 years, and it's been incredibly dependable. The only downside is the poor fuel economy. Be prepared to spend a lot at the gas pump.
Negative Owner Reviews
David L.
The ride is surprisingly comfortable for a truck. The interior is starting to show its age, with some wear and tear on the seats and dashboard. But mechanically sound and a good daily driver.
Michael B.
This truck is great for light-duty work, like hauling furniture or landscaping supplies. It's not really designed for heavy-duty towing or hauling. Consider the engine size if you plan to tow with it.
Ashley T.
This is a basic truck, nothing fancy. It gets me from point A to point B. Don't expect a lot of bells and whistles. Simple and reliable.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2004 Ford F-150's built-in tech and entertainment features were relatively basic by modern standards. Standard features typically included an AM/FM radio and CD player. Higher trims like the Lariat and King Ranch offered upgraded sound systems, possibly with a cassette player and/or a CD changer. Driver-assistance features were limited, with options like cruise control and sometimes rear parking sensors (on higher trims).

Safety features included standard front airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and seatbelts. Optional safety features might have included side airbags, but these weren't universally available. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) was not available on this model year.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) vary depending on the cab configuration. Generally, the F-150 performed reasonably well in frontal crash tests. However, side-impact protection could be better. Always consult the official NHTSA and IIHS websites for specific crash test ratings for the 2004 F-150 models you're considering. Keep in mind that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2004, so even a well-rated 2004 F-150 may not offer the same level of protection as a newer vehicle.

2004 Ford F-150 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2004 Ford F-150 ranged from approximately $22,000 for a base XL model to around $38,000 for a fully equipped King Ranch or Lariat. Currently, used market prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, trim, and location. Expect to find them priced anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000. Depreciation has been substantial, as is typical for trucks. Factors affecting resale value include: low mileage, excellent condition (especially absence of rust), desirable trim levels (Lariat, King Ranch, FX4), 4x4 capability, and a clean title. Regular maintenance records also positively impact resale value.

2004 Ford F-150 Cost of Ownership

Owning a 2004 Ford F-150 can be moderately costly. Insurance rates are typical for a full-size truck. Fuel economy is not great, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance can be reasonable with regular servicing, but repairs, particularly spark plug issues on the 5.4L engine and rust repairs, can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance and how well the truck was cared for previously. Finding a well-maintained example is key to minimizing expenses. It's not the most economical vehicle, but its utility can offset costs for some owners.

2004 Ford F-150 Insurance

Insurance for a 2004 Ford F-150 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2004 Ford F-150 Compare to Other Truck?

The 2004 Ford F-150 competed with the Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra, Dodge Ram, and Toyota Tundra. In terms of performance, the F-150's 5.4L V8 was competitive, but the Ram offered a more powerful Hemi V8 option. Feature-wise, the F-150 was generally well-equipped, especially in higher trims, but the Silverado/Sierra offered similar levels of comfort and technology.

Reliability is a mixed bag. While generally dependable, the 2004 F-150 had potential spark plug issues. The Toyota Tundra often boasts superior long-term reliability. Price-wise, the F-150 was generally competitive, but used prices fluctuate based on condition and location.

Alternatives to consider include:
  • Toyota Tundra: If reliability is a top priority.
  • Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra: For similar features and performance, potentially at a slightly lower price point.
  • Dodge Ram: For a more powerful engine option (Hemi V8) and a different styling approach.
Before purchasing, compare specific examples of each truck, considering mileage, condition, and maintenance history.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Ford F-150 a Good Truck?

The 2004 Ford F-150 is a decent used truck option for those seeking a capable and relatively affordable full-size pickup. It's ideal for individuals needing a truck for occasional hauling, towing, or work-related tasks. It's worth buying if you can find a well-maintained example with a clean title and service history. Focus on the XLT or FX4 trims for a good balance of features and value. The Lariat and King Ranch offer more luxury but command a higher price. Thoroughly inspect the truck for rust and address any potential spark plug issues on the 5.4L engine. Buying a pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended.

Reliable Truck, Some Rust Issues

Bought this truck used a few years ago. It's been very reliable mechanically. The engine is strong and it tows well. The only real issue is rust starting to appear on the body, which is expected for a truck of this age in the Northeast.

Great Value for the Money

This truck is a workhorse! I use it for hauling supplies for my small business, and it hasn't let me down. Gas mileage isn't great, but that's to be expected with a truck this size. Overall, a great value.

Comfortable Ride, Aging Interior

The ride is surprisingly comfortable for a truck. The interior is starting to show its age, with some wear and tear on the seats and dashboard. But mechanically sound and a good daily driver.

Dependable but Thirsty

I've owned this truck for over 10 years, and it's been incredibly dependable. The only downside is the poor fuel economy. Be prepared to spend a lot at the gas pump.

Good for Light Duty, Not Heavy Hauling

This truck is great for light-duty work, like hauling furniture or landscaping supplies. It's not really designed for heavy-duty towing or hauling. Consider the engine size if you plan to tow with it.

Needed Repairs, Now Runs Great

I bought this truck knowing it needed some work. After replacing a few parts, it now runs great! It was a good project truck. Just be prepared for potential repairs with an older vehicle.

Solid Truck, Check the Suspension

It is a generally solid truck, but I had to replace the suspension components after a few years. Something to consider if you're looking at buying a used one. Overall, happy with my purchase.

Basic Transportation, Nothing Fancy

This is a basic truck, nothing fancy. It gets me from point A to point B. Don't expect a lot of bells and whistles. Simple and reliable.

Transmission Issues at High Mileage

I had some transmission issues around 180,000 miles. Something to keep in mind if you're looking at a high-mileage F-150. Otherwise, it's been a good truck.
