2013 Volkswagen Passat Review: Dependable & Luxurious Midsize Sedan

Rating: 4.53
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The 2013 Volkswagen Passat is a mid-size sedan designed for comfort and practicality. Part of the seventh-generation Passat (NMS), it was specifically tailored for the North American market. Key trims included the S, SE, SEL, and TDI. New, it ranged from around $20,000 to $33,000. Its spacious rear seat and large trunk made it popular for families and those needing extra room. The availability of a fuel-efficient TDI diesel engine also set it apart.
The Good

The 2013 Passat offered a comfortable ride and spacious cabin, appealing to practical buyers. Its available TDI engine provided excellent fuel efficiency. The car's clean, understated design offered a touch of European sophistication. It was also considered a good value for its size and features, balancing affordability with a relatively premium feel.

The Bad

Some common weaknesses included potential issues with the automatic transmission, particularly in earlier models. Reports of electrical problems and water leaks into the cabin have also surfaced. The interior materials, while functional, weren't always considered as premium as some competitors. Be sure to check the car's maintenance history carefully.

What Problems Does the 2013 Volkswagen Passat Have?

The 2013 Volkswagen Passat has had its share of reported problems. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, particularly concerning rough shifting or hesitation. Electrical problems, such as malfunctioning sensors or issues with the infotainment system, have also been reported. Water leaks, often entering the cabin through the sunroof or door seals, are another recurring concern.

Several recalls have affected the 2013 Passat. These recalls have addressed issues ranging from potential fuel leaks to problems with the airbags and electrical systems. Checking the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is crucial to determine if any recalls apply and have been addressed.

Long-term reliability can be a concern. The TDI engine, while fuel-efficient, requires specific maintenance and can be costly to repair if issues arise with the diesel particulate filter (DPF) or other emission control components. Overall, while the Passat can be a comfortable and spacious sedan, potential buyers should be aware of these potential problems and ensure a thorough inspection before purchasing a used model.

How long will the 2013 Volkswagen Passat last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2013 Volkswagen Passat can reasonably reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report getting 10-15 years of service. However, consistent maintenance is key. Long-term durability depends heavily on timely oil changes, transmission servicing, and addressing any cooling system issues promptly. Weaknesses over time often include deterioration of rubber components (hoses, seals), potential for rust in colder climates, and wear and tear on suspension components. Electrical issues can also become more prevalent with age.

Negative Owner Reviews
EltonHP
The VW TDI is a poor choice because the vehicles were allowed to sit for years and the dealers are selling them without thoroughly inspecting them.
KrayzieChico
I like this car but do not love it. It is smooth, has well thought out controls, is spacious, looks good, and drives well. The downfall is the five cylinder power train, which lacks power. Fuel economy is also not great, and the engine is not as smooth as the Honda Accord we own. The transmission lags a bit prior to shift. The 2013 VW Passat feels well constructed although its reliability may not prove to last.
Habibun
The car is good , it has more leg room, good size of ledge room . 2.5 liter engine . nice exterior color and interior also good color.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Volkswagen Passat offered a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard on most trims was a basic audio system with CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims included a touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and a premium sound system.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern cars, but available options included a rearview camera and parking sensors on higher trims. Safety features included standard antilock brakes, stability control, and a full suite of airbags (front, side, and curtain).

Optional features varied depending on the trim level. These included leather upholstery, heated front seats, a sunroof, and keyless entry with push-button start.

The 2013 Volkswagen Passat received good crash-test ratings from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The NHTSA gave it a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS named it a Top Safety Pick.

2013 Volkswagen Passat Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Volkswagen Passat ranged from approximately $20,000 for the base S trim to around $33,000 for a fully equipped VR6 SEL model. As of late 2023/early 2024, used prices typically range from $6,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Passat has depreciated significantly, which makes it an affordable used car option. Factors affecting resale value include maintenance history, accident record, mileage, and overall condition. The TDI models tend to hold their value slightly better due to their fuel efficiency.

2013 Volkswagen Passat Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2013 Passat are generally moderate. Fuel costs vary depending on the engine; the TDI offers significant savings. Maintenance can be average to slightly above average, especially for the TDI, which requires specialized servicing. Repairs can be costly, particularly for transmission or electrical issues. Overall, the 2013 Passat can be relatively economical to own, especially the TDI model, but unexpected repairs can increase long-term costs. Budgeting for potential maintenance is advised.

2013 Volkswagen Passat Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Volkswagen Passat is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Volkswagen Passat Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2013 Volkswagen Passat competed with other mid-size sedans like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Nissan Altima. Compared to the Camry and Accord, the Passat offered a more European driving feel and a more spacious rear seat. The Ford Fusion provided more stylish exterior design options, while the Nissan Altima often offered a lower price point. In terms of reliability, the Camry and Accord generally had a better reputation than the Passat. Feature-wise, the Passat was competitive, but some rivals offered more advanced technology.

Alternatives to the 2013 Passat include the Toyota Camry (known for reliability), Honda Accord (well-rounded and reliable), Mazda 6 (sportier driving experience), and Hyundai Sonata (good value for money). If reliability is a top priority, the Camry or Accord are better choices. For a sportier driving experience, the Mazda 6 is recommended. The Hyundai Sonata offers a similar value proposition to the Passat but with a longer warranty.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Volkswagen Passat a Good Sedan?

The 2013 Volkswagen Passat is ideal for buyers seeking a spacious and comfortable mid-size sedan, especially those who value a large backseat and trunk. It's worth considering as a used car, particularly if you can find a well-maintained TDI model. However, potential buyers should be aware of the potential reliability concerns and carefully inspect the car before purchasing. Prioritize models with a documented maintenance history and consider a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic. Avoid neglected examples or those with a history of major repairs.

It’s an ok car

Soo let me just say this I was very excited that I was able to get approved for a vehicle. I was a first time buyer didn’t have much knowledge. When I purchased my car it was cold & pouring down so with that being said I was not able to check the vehicle for shakes with high speed not the brakes. The next day I checked out a few things rims where damaged they dipped them for me, speaker on door busted they will not fix it, I later found out heater core was busted they lied about fixing it. I had to get diagnostics to see if they fixed things they said they fixed that cost $100 my wheel alignment was messed up they so called fixed it now it gears to the left😡🤔🙄 soo now I’m just gone get it fixed myself the list goes on . Let’s get back to the radio issues so when I turn the radio on it squeal they replaced a speaker that didn’t fix it, now my radio has a delay I will never buy another Volkswagen in my life or maybe not from that location I’m Hazelwood,MO

Newest car that I’ve gotten, Also very reliable

This was one of my favorite cars I test drove, but also one of the base models. It has a huge trunk and tons of room for a car seat or 2. Gets an average of 38-40mpg which is awesome for my driving to and from work.
