Rating: 4.42
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2014 Nissan Altima is a mid-size sedan, part of the Altima's fifth generation (2013-2018). Key trims included the base S, SV, SL, and sporty SR. Known for its comfortable ride and fuel efficiency, the Altima gained popularity as a practical family sedan. The original MSRP ranged from around $22,000 to $30,000, depending on the trim and options.
The Good

The 2014 Nissan Altima offers a comfortable ride and spacious interior, appealing to those seeking practicality. Excellent fuel economy is a major selling point. While not a performance car, it offers adequate power for daily driving. Its sleek design adds a touch of style, and it's generally regarded as a good value for the money.

The Bad

The 2014 Nissan Altima's continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a known potential weak point. Some owners have reported issues with it. The interior materials, while functional, aren't the most luxurious. The handling isn't as sharp as some competitors, and the base engine can feel underpowered when fully loaded.

What Problems Does the 2014 Nissan Altima Have?

The most frequently reported problem with the 2014 Nissan Altima revolves around its continuously variable transmission (CVT). Some owners have experienced shuddering, slipping, or even complete failure, often requiring expensive repairs or replacements. Premature CVT failure is a significant long-term reliability concern.

Other reported issues include problems with the electronic power steering, causing a loss of power assist. There have also been reports of issues with the mass airflow sensor and oxygen sensors, leading to poor engine performance and fuel economy. Furthermore, some owners have noted issues with the entertainment system and other electrical components.

Checking the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for recalls is crucial before purchasing a used 2014 Altima. Common recalls addressed issues such as faulty hood latches, potentially leading to the hood flying open while driving, and malfunctioning airbags. Addressing any outstanding recall repairs is essential for safety and long-term reliability.

How long will the 2014 Nissan Altima last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 Nissan Altima can realistically reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reaching these milestones with regular servicing, including timely oil changes, fluid flushes, and other preventive maintenance. However, the CVT remains a significant long-term durability concern.

Neglecting transmission maintenance significantly shortens its lifespan. Other areas prone to wear and tear include suspension components, brakes, and electrical systems. Rust can also become a problem in regions with harsh winters and road salt usage. Regular car washes and undercarriage cleaning can help mitigate this.

Has 77000 miles and needs transmission. Do not buy. Do your research first. A lot of similar problems with other buyers about transmission. Sensors go bad alot.

Nissan Altima is very over rated. I bought a fully loaded SL and within 4 years and around 58000 miles the car AC compressor broke. I reported the problem to Nissan Corp and also let them how pathetic my experience was at there Dealership and they wasted my $150 to tell that they cant do anything . This company and there Dealers are crooks.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Nissan Altima offers a decent array of tech, entertainment, and safety features for its time. Standard features include keyless entry, push-button start, and a 4-speaker audio system. Higher trims add features like Bluetooth connectivity, a 5-inch display screen, a rearview camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a USB port.

Optional features on higher trims include a navigation system, a Bose premium audio system, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a sunroof. Driver-assistance features, such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, were also available on upper trims.

Safety features include anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a suite of airbags. The 2014 Nissan Altima received good crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). However, specific ratings vary by test, so consulting these organizations' websites for detailed information is recommended.

2014 Nissan Altima Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Nissan Altima ranged from approximately $22,000 to $30,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of late 2023/early 2024, used models typically range from around $8,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location.

The Altima has depreciated significantly. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level, accident history, and the presence of desirable features like leather seats and a navigation system. Models with a well-documented maintenance history generally command a higher price. The potential for CVT issues can negatively impact resale value.

2014 Nissan Altima Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Nissan Altima is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is a strong point, especially with the 2.5-liter engine. Routine maintenance, such as oil changes and tire rotations, is relatively affordable. However, potential CVT repairs can significantly increase long-term ownership costs. Therefore, budgeting for potential transmission issues is crucial when considering a used 2014 Altima.

2014 Nissan Altima Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Nissan Altima is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Nissan Altima Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2014 Nissan Altima competes with other mid-size sedans like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Mazda 6. In terms of performance, the Camry and Accord offer more engaging driving experiences. The Fusion boasts a more stylish interior, while the Mazda 6 provides sharper handling.

The Altima's fuel economy is competitive, but its CVT reliability is a concern compared to the Camry and Accord, which have stronger reliability reputations. Feature-wise, the Altima offers a comparable set of amenities, though some rivals might have slightly more advanced technology. Price-wise, the Altima is often competitively priced in the used market.

Alternatives to the 2014 Altima include the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord for their reliability. The Mazda 6 offers a sportier driving experience, and the Ford Fusion provides a more stylish option. Consider these alternatives if reliability or driving dynamics are top priorities. However, if you find a well-maintained Altima at a good price, and are prepared for potential CVT maintenance, it can still be a reasonable option.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Nissan Altima a Good Sedan?

The 2014 Nissan Altima is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a fuel-efficient and comfortable mid-size sedan. It's worth buying *used* if you can find one in excellent condition with a documented maintenance history, especially one where the CVT has been well-maintained or even replaced. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended, with particular attention paid to the CVT's condition.

The SV or SL trims offer a good balance of features and value. Be aware of the potential for CVT issues and factor that into your decision-making process. If long-term reliability is your top priority, consider alternatives like the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord.

Great gas mileage.

Great gas mileage. I had my 14 Nissan Altima for 5 years, bought it at 64,000 miles. No issues at all, up until 130,000 miles the transmission failed catastrophically and left me stranded. This car was very well maintained and had no problems up until the transmission failure. I hear early CVT transmission is very common in many Nissan models, and I'll never buy one again.

Too many issues

I purchased my 2014 Nissan Altima SL in 2016 with 22k miles on it. The car currently has 85k miles. I will start with the positives with the car: The fuel mileage is phenomenal. It averages 30.5 mpg city/highway combined. The interior is very nice with heated seats and steering wheel. I liked the one-touch phone feature. Now for the negatives: I have had to replace every strut/shock on the vehicle. I recently replaced the left rear suspension control arm again - Nissan does have a unlimited mile/84 month replacement warranty on them due to their propensity to rust and break. My bluetooth is no longer working correctly - it dials the wrong numbers and nothing has remedied the situation. The driver's side interior door handle just broke and it won't open the door. The right front wheel bearing has also worn out and now needs replaced. The rear backup camera often malfunctions and the screen is just black. The radio occasionally will not work or cuts out while driving. All of this in 85k miles. I find the car very unreliable - I have NEVER had this many issues with a car I have owned before.

lot of problems with this car

I had recalls ones .Dealer they fix it .Now my airbag light came on. I called Nissan Factory they don't want to stand behind their product. They say by my VIN number there is no recall on my car . She also said that after 33,000 miles that I didn't have no more warranty .So pretty much they will not do anything for me .Dealer want me to pay $142 just for diagnosis . My car is Nissan Altima 2014 and I just have 62,000 miles on it.

A very nice drive

I got the SL version of the car with the technology package, and it is very nice. The remote start is very handy for when I need to warm or cool down my car before I get in. The navigation is useful along with bluetooth, and heated seats+ steering wheel are a nice touch. It also comes with a backup camera which can be useful since you can’t see all around the car by turning your head. It also has lane departure warning and blind spot warning lights, making it very safe to drive.
