2015 Nissan Altima Review: A Safe Midsize Car With Transmission Problems

Rating: 4.47
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2015 Nissan Altima is a mid-size sedan that's been a popular choice for its blend of fuel efficiency, comfort, and value. Part of the fifth generation (2013-2018), the 2015 model offered a comfortable ride and spacious interior. Key trims included the base S, SL, SV, and sporty SR. New, pricing ranged from approximately $22,000 to $30,000. It stood out due to its impressive fuel economy, particularly with the 4-cylinder engine, and its comfortable, family-friendly nature.
The Good

The 2015 Altima offers a blend of practicality and appeal. Its strengths lie in its fuel efficiency (appealing to budget-conscious buyers), comfortable ride, and spacious interior, making it ideal for families. The sleek design and available sporty SR trim add a touch of emotional appeal, while its reputation for decent reliability provides peace of mind for practical buyers.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses include the CVT transmission, which has been known to experience issues. Some owners have reported premature wear or failure. The interior, while spacious, may not have the highest-quality materials compared to rivals. Also, the base engine can feel underpowered when fully loaded. Listen for any unusual noises from the CVT during a test drive.

What Problems Does the 2015 Nissan Altima Have?

The most frequently reported problem with the 2015 Nissan Altima revolves around its Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Owners have reported issues such as shuddering, slipping, and complete transmission failure at relatively low mileages. This is a known long-term reliability concern. Symptoms often include unusual noises, hesitation during acceleration, and a general lack of responsiveness.

There have been recalls issued for the 2015 Altima, including issues related to the hood latch potentially failing and the fuel sending unit malfunctioning, which could lead to inaccurate fuel readings. Check the NHTSA website for the most up-to-date recall information using the VIN.

Other potential problems include issues with the electrical system, particularly concerning sensors and control modules. Some owners have also reported problems with the air conditioning system. While not as widespread as the CVT issues, these problems can still lead to unexpected repair costs. Thorough inspection and a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic are recommended.

How long will the 2015 Nissan Altima last?

With proper maintenance, a 2015 Nissan Altima can realistically reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, the CVT transmission is a significant factor in long-term durability. Regular CVT fluid changes (more frequent than Nissan's recommendation) are crucial for longevity. Neglecting maintenance or driving aggressively can significantly shorten the transmission's lifespan. Other potential weaknesses over time include wear and tear on suspension components and potential issues with the electrical system. Rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters.

I recommend this car to anyone! I had the car for 4 years to get me through college and unfortunately I hit a deer and completely totaled the car. Nissan gets too much hate, this was an absolutely solid car. Bought the car with 48,000 miles and the odometer read 235,000 miles right before I totaled it. I have never had a single mechanical issue with the car, the only thing that needed to be replaced was my AC system at 140,000 miles. If you want a car that last forever buy an Altima you won’t be disappointed. I have owned a 2008 Rogue, 2009 Versa, the 2015 Altima, and now I own a 2023 Nissan Rogue and I have never had a problem with any of my cars. I will be buying Nissan again again.

I have had this car for 7 years, did doordash, grub-hub, shipt, daily commute of 100 miles a day. It never complained only changes belts, brakes. Its reliable and mine now have 202k miles and still kicking! Would definitely recommend it
Uber Lyft Guy
Bought model S at online auction. The car is just fantastic. Has 190K miles on it. Runs like new. Using it for Uber and Lyft. Passes inspection with no problems for 4 years straight. Will drive it as long as it will allow me to.

Nissan Altima is a good car, relaiable being Japanese brand but still little expensive for this much level of comfort and design. Over all its a good option to own for long term use.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 Nissan Altima came with a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included keyless entry/ignition, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and cruise control. Higher trims (SV, SR, SL) offered more advanced technology.

Entertainment: SV trims and above added a 5-inch display screen, a six-speaker sound system, and satellite radio. The SL trim featured a premium Bose audio system. Navigation was often available as an optional package.

Driver-Assistance & Safety: Higher trims included a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. These features were optional on some lower trims. Standard safety features included antilock brakes, stability control, front-seat side airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags.

Crash-Test Ratings: The 2015 Nissan Altima generally performed well in crash tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) awarded it a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave it a "Good" rating in most crash tests, though ratings can vary depending on the specific test.

While the technology isn't as advanced as newer cars, the 2015 Altima offered a solid set of features for its class and model year, particularly on the higher trim levels.

2015 Nissan Altima Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2015 Nissan Altima had an MSRP ranging from approximately $22,000 to $30,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Altima has experienced significant depreciation due to its age and the aforementioned CVT transmission concerns. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and whether it has any outstanding recalls. Models with the V6 engine and higher trim levels tend to hold their value slightly better than the base models.

2015 Nissan Altima Cost of Ownership

The 2015 Nissan Altima is generally considered economical to own, *except* for potential CVT transmission repairs. Insurance costs are typically average for a mid-size sedan. Fuel costs are low, especially with the 4-cylinder engine. Routine maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations) is affordable. However, if the CVT transmission requires major repairs or replacement, it can significantly increase long-term ownership costs. Budgeting for potential transmission issues is essential when considering a used 2015 Altima.

2015 Nissan Altima Insurance

Insurance for a 2015 Nissan Altima is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2015 Nissan Altima Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2015 Nissan Altima competes with other mid-size sedans like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Mazda 6. In terms of *performance*, the Altima's 4-cylinder engine is adequate, but the V6 lags behind some competitors. The Camry and Accord generally have better *reliability* reputations, especially regarding their transmissions. The Fusion offers a more stylish design, and the Mazda 6 provides a sportier driving experience. The Altima excels in *price* and fuel economy, often being more affordable than its rivals.

Regarding *features*, the Altima is competitive, but some rivals offer more advanced technology. If *reliability* is a top priority, the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord are better alternatives. If you prioritize sporty handling, consider the Mazda 6. If you prefer a stylish design, the Ford Fusion is a good choice. However, if you're looking for an affordable and fuel-efficient mid-size sedan and are willing to take the risk with the CVT transmission, the 2015 Altima could be a viable option. Just be sure to get a pre-purchase inspection.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 Nissan Altima a Good Sedan?

The 2015 Nissan Altima is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a fuel-efficient and comfortable mid-size sedan. However, the car's worthiness hinges heavily on the condition of its CVT transmission. It's worth buying *used* if you can find one with documented transmission maintenance and a clean bill of health from a trusted mechanic. Lower trims (S, SV) are generally better value. Avoid models with high mileage or signs of transmission issues. Be prepared for potential transmission repairs. If reliability is paramount, consider alternatives like the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord, even if they cost a bit more.

I do not drive a lot.

I do not drive a lot. I regularly maintain the vehicle with oil and fluid changes as recommended. At 65,000 miles after 9 years (and of course outside of warranty) things began to fail. The timing cover is leaking, the transmission is failing (the famous "never needs service" CVT), the front suspension is falling apart with shot bushings, the AC is leaking, and on and on. This was a lot turd which had 6 miles when I bought it, and the hacked out original radio should have been a clue when I bought it. Never again NEVER Nissan, that's for certain.

I bought a 2015 Nissan Altima S in 2016.

I bought a 2015 Nissan Altima S in 2016. It had 38,000 miles. I still have it in August 2024. It now has 272,000 miles. The only maintenance I have done is brakes, oil changes, and tires. It's the most reliable car I have ever owned. I highly recommend this car. It gets great gas mileage and has a roomy, comfortable interior.

The best used car I ever bought

Bought model S at online auction. The car is just fantastic. Has 190K miles on it. Runs like new. Using it for Uber and Lyft. Passes inspection with no problems for 4 years straight. Will drive it as long as it will allow me to.

Transmission issues

Because of the transmission that nissan installed. I believe dealerships should advise people of this issue. Lack of knowledge caused me to replace the transmission. It cost me 5,000.00

Best car EVER

This Altima has the fully sport pkg with sunroof, climate controlled seats, all the bells and whistles. Its only a 4 cylinder but "happy" speed is 80 MPH . It has plenty of zip to pass cars . It lane minders, speed minders, and side object warnings . it has controlled entertainment and hands-off phone and GPS guidance on level highway and 70 mph it get 43 MPG. The best car for the money I ever had in my life. 50000 miles of service and not one penny on repairs. Still even has original brakes and tires. Rides like a dream

2015 Nissan Altima 2.5s

Bought my 2.5s Altima 1 year ago and just had the transmission replaced at 67,000 miles. Replaced thank God but still worrisome as the car only has 67,000 miles.
