Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 is a light-duty pickup truck known for its blend of capability and refinement. As part of the Sierra's fourth generation (2014-2018), it offers a comfortable ride and user-friendly tech. Available body styles include Regular Cab, Double Cab, and Crew Cab. Key trims range from the base Sierra to the luxurious Denali. Pricing ranged from around $28,000 to over $60,000 when new, depending on configuration. It's popular for its upscale styling and available features like the MultiPro tailgate.
The Good

The 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 offers strong performance thanks to its range of engine options. Its comfortable cabin and upscale design appeal to those seeking a refined truck experience. For practical buyers, it boasts respectable reliability and towing capacity. The Sierra provides a sense of capability and style, making it an attractive choice.

The Bad

The 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 can suffer from transmission issues, particularly the 8-speed automatic. Some owners have reported "Chevy Shake" or shuddering. The fuel economy, while decent, isn't class-leading. The infotainment system, while functional, can feel dated compared to rivals. Watch out for potential oil consumption issues in some engines.

What Problems Does the 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 include issues with the 8-speed automatic transmission, often described as a "Chevy Shake" or shuddering at lower speeds. This can sometimes be addressed with a transmission flush or software update, but in some cases, it requires more extensive repairs. Some owners have also reported excessive oil consumption, particularly with the 5.3L V8 engine. This issue can lead to premature engine wear if not monitored and addressed.

Recalls for the 2018 Sierra 1500 have included issues with the power steering assist, potentially leading to a loss of power steering. Other recalls have addressed problems with the brake system and seat belt functionality. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the transmission and engine issues mentioned above. The electrical system can also be a source of problems over time, including issues with the infotainment system and various sensors. Potential buyers should check the vehicle history for any reported issues and ensure that all applicable recalls have been addressed. Regular maintenance and monitoring of oil levels are crucial for mitigating potential problems.

How long will the 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more, potentially providing 10-15 years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on consistent maintenance habits, including regular oil changes, transmission servicing, and addressing issues promptly. The transmission and engine (specifically oil consumption) are the primary long-term durability concerns. Neglecting these areas can significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan. Rust can also become a factor in colder climates, impacting body panels and undercarriage components over time. Regular washing and undercoating can help mitigate this.

Negative Owner Reviews
John t
Experiencing shutter between 45 and 65 mph... unknown if transmission issue. Steering wheel violently shakes and becomes an uncomfortable ride. Should not have to deal with this with top of the line truck. Owned a 2016 Sierra All- terrain edition that drove much better. Paid up for the Denali and so far Was not worth the money. I’m hoping dealership has a fix. Vehicle is riding like a base model. Would never pay this price if known after 2k miles it would perform the way it has. Very disappointed.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 offers a range of built-in tech and safety features. Standard entertainment includes a 4.2-inch display screen, AM/FM radio, and USB port. Higher trims offer the GMC MyLink infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto compatibility. Available driver-assistance features include a rearview camera (standard), lane departure warning, forward collision alert, and low-speed automatic braking. Optional features on higher trims also include parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Safety features encompass standard airbags, ABS, and stability control. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2018 Sierra 1500 a 4-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings vary depending on the cab configuration, but Crew Cab models generally received good scores in most crash tests. However, some ratings like the small overlap front test may be marginal. It's important to review specific crash test results based on the cab style being considered. While functional, the technology in the 2018 Sierra isn't as cutting-edge as some newer trucks, lacking features like adaptive cruise control on lower trims.

2018 GMC Sierra 1500 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 ranged from approximately $28,000 to over $60,000 depending on the trim, cab configuration, and options. Current used market prices generally range from $25,000 to $45,000, reflecting substantial depreciation. Depreciation is influenced by mileage, condition, trim level, and location. Crew Cab models and higher trims like the Denali tend to hold their value better. A clean title, well-documented maintenance history, and desirable options (like 4WD and upgraded infotainment) positively impact resale value. The aforementioned transmission issues and oil consumption problems can negatively affect the price.

2018 GMC Sierra 1500 Cost of Ownership

The 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 falls into the mid-range in terms of ownership costs. Insurance premiums are average for a full-size truck. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with the V8 engines. Maintenance costs are moderate, but potential transmission and engine repairs can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs are average, but diligent maintenance is key to avoiding costly repairs. It's not the most economical truck to own, but not the most expensive either.

2018 GMC Sierra 1500 Insurance

Insurance for a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 competes with the Ford F-150, Ram 1500, Toyota Tundra, and Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The F-150 often surpasses the Sierra in terms of fuel economy and available technology. The Ram 1500 typically offers a more comfortable ride and a more luxurious interior. The Tundra is known for its exceptional reliability but lacks the Sierra's refinement and fuel efficiency. The Silverado 1500 is mechanically similar to the Sierra but often comes at a slightly lower price point.

In terms of performance, the Sierra's engine options are competitive, but the transmission issues can detract from the driving experience. Feature-wise, the Sierra offers a decent array of tech, but some rivals have more advanced options. Reliability is a concern due to the aforementioned transmission and engine problems. Price-wise, the Sierra is generally in line with its competitors. If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota Tundra is a better choice. If a more comfortable ride and luxurious interior are desired, the Ram 1500 is a strong contender. If a lower price is the main factor, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 offers similar capabilities.

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 a Good Vehicle?

The 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 is ideal for buyers who appreciate a blend of capability and refinement in a pickup truck. It's worth buying *used* if you find a well-maintained example with a comprehensive inspection to address potential transmission or engine issues. Aim for higher trims like the SLT or Denali for added features and comfort, but be prepared to pay a premium. Carefully consider the vehicle's history, mileage, and overall condition. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended to mitigate potential risks. If reliability is paramount, other options like the Toyota Tundra might be a better fit.

Issue after issue. This truck is serviced religiously by GMC dealership we purchased from. AC went out in February, CV joints had to be replaced in July, computer system went out in August, transmission went out in October.

Transmission failure is very common

Transmission failure is very common. After 30+ emails and calls to Gmc they have responded with the same amount of emails and phone calls however there’s no resolution to my problem I keep getting pushed to someone that cannot make a decision in regards to the transmission failure that I am experiencing. I am reporting this transmission problem to the national transportation highway safety administration in Washington DC if you were having the same issue you should do the same

This is an attractive and enjoyable vehicle.

I traded my Chevrolet Silverado for this GM Certified GMC Sierra 1500. It is an attractive and enjoyable vehicle. Some years ago I had a GMC and really prefer them over a Chevrolet. This vehicle is just what I need for hauling and general driving.
