The 2012 Honda CR-V marks the beginning of the fourth generation of Honda's popular compact SUV, a lineage known for reliability and practicality. It features a versatile 5-door SUV body style. Key trims include the LX, EX, and EX-L. When new, prices ranged from around $22,000 to $30,000. Its blend of fuel efficiency, spacious interior, and reputation for dependability made it a top choice for families and commuters.
The Good

The 2012 Honda CR-V excels in reliability and practicality. It offers a comfortable ride and a spacious interior appealing to families. Its fuel efficiency is a major draw for budget-conscious buyers. While not a performance vehicle, its dependability provides peace of mind, a strong emotional factor.

The Bad

The 2012 CR-V's engine, while reliable, can feel underpowered, especially when fully loaded. The infotainment system is basic and lacks modern features. Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system and premature brake wear. Overall, it's a reliable vehicle but requires diligent maintenance.

What Problems Does the 2012 Honda CR-V Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 Honda CR-V include issues with the air conditioning system, specifically the compressor failing prematurely. Some owners have also reported excessive oil consumption, although this isn't as widespread as the A/C issue. Another common complaint revolves around the infotainment system, which can be slow and unresponsive. Premature brake wear is also noted. There have been recalls related to airbags and potential fuel leakage due to faulty fuel pump components; owners should check the NHTSA website with their VIN to verify if their vehicle is affected.
Long-term reliability is generally good, but the A/C and potential oil consumption issues need monitoring. Regular maintenance, especially fluid changes, is crucial. While specific issues tied solely to the 2012 model year are not overwhelmingly present, pre-purchase inspections are still recommended to check for these common problems. The 2012 model doesn't suffer from significant model-year-specific defects relative to other years within the generation.

How long will the 2012 Honda CR-V last?

With consistent maintenance, a 2012 Honda CR-V can easily reach 200,000 miles or more and provide 10-15 years of service. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires), and addressing minor issues promptly are key. Long-term durability is a strong point, but weaknesses may emerge in the air conditioning system, potentially requiring compressor replacement. Rust can become a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt, especially if preventative measures like undercoating weren't taken. Engine mounts and suspension components may also need replacement as the vehicle ages.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Honda CR-V features a relatively basic tech suite compared to modern vehicles. Standard entertainment includes a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims add a USB input and upgraded audio systems. Navigation was an optional feature on the EX-L trim.

Driver-assistance features are limited. It lacks advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring, which are common in newer vehicles. Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), traction control, and multiple airbags (front, side, and side curtain).

Crash-test ratings are generally good. The 2012 CR-V received strong safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), earning a "Top Safety Pick" award. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also awarded it a 4-star overall safety rating. The absence of modern driver-assistance tech is a notable difference compared to newer vehicles, but the standard safety equipment and strong crash test results provide a reasonable level of protection.

2012 Honda CR-V Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Honda CR-V ranged from approximately $22,000 for the base LX trim to around $30,000 for a fully equipped EX-L model. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The CR-V holds its value relatively well due to Honda's reputation for reliability. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (especially rust), maintenance history, and whether it's a FWD or AWD model (AWD models generally command a slightly higher price). Depreciation is less severe than some competitors, reflecting its strong reputation.

2012 Honda CR-V Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Honda CR-V is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel costs are reasonable due to its decent fuel economy. Maintenance is relatively affordable, with readily available parts and a reliable engine. Repairs are generally less frequent and less expensive than some competitors. Long-term ownership costs are favorable thanks to its dependability and fuel efficiency. However, potential A/C repairs should be factored in when budgeting.

2012 Honda CR-V Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Honda CR-V is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Honda CR-V Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2012 Honda CR-V competes with the Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, Mazda CX-5, and Subaru Forester. In terms of reliability, the CR-V and RAV4 are often considered top choices. The Ford Escape offers peppier engine options but may not match the long-term reliability of the Honda. The Mazda CX-5 provides a more engaging driving experience but sacrifices some cargo space. The Subaru Forester offers standard all-wheel drive, a plus for those in snowy climates, but its fuel economy might be slightly lower.

Compared to the CR-V, the RAV4 offers similar reliability and space. The Forester is a strong alternative for AWD enthusiasts. If driving dynamics are a priority, the CX-5 is a compelling option. For pure value, a well-maintained Escape could be considered, but be mindful of potential reliability concerns. Overall, the CR-V stands out for its balance of reliability, practicality, and resale value. The RAV4 is a very similar alternative. If modern features are essential, newer models of these vehicles are worth considering, even if they come at a higher price point.

It now has a towing package 1,500 lbs.

It's longer than most SUVs. I've been able to haul both drywall and plywood still closing the rear door. It's been great to travel with, the back seats fold all the way down.

A piece of junk with engine noise on start from day 1 that Honda ignores. Should have been a recall. There are many complaints about this engine noise on the internet. Research it!
