2014 Ford F-150 Review: A Capable and Dependable Half-Ton Truck

Rating: 4.54
Based on 112 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2014 Ford F-150 is part of the twelfth generation of the iconic F-Series truck. Available in multiple body styles (Regular Cab, SuperCab, and SuperCrew), it offered a range of trims, including the XL, STX, XLT, FX2, FX4, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited. New pricing ranged roughly from $24,000 to $55,000. Its immense versatility, powerful engine options, and comfortable interior helped solidify its place as America's best-selling truck.
The Good

The 2014 F-150 boasts strong performance with multiple engine choices, solid reliability ratings, and a comfortable, well-appointed interior (especially in higher trims). Its rugged design appeals emotionally, while its towing capacity and practicality appeal to buyers needing a workhorse. Its relatively good value for the capabilities offered is a major selling point.

The Bad

Some 2014 F-150 models have reported issues with the spark plugs breaking during removal, particularly in the 5.4L Triton engine. Fuel economy, while acceptable, isn't class-leading compared to some rivals. Certain trim levels can feel dated, and the base models lack some desirable features. Also, check for rust, especially in areas with harsh winters.

What Problems Does the 2014 Ford F-150 Have?

The 2014 Ford F-150, while generally reliable, does have some frequently reported problems. The 5.4L Triton engine is known for spark plug issues, where the plugs can break during removal, requiring special tools and potentially expensive repairs. This is a recurring issue across multiple model years with that engine. Some owners have also reported problems with the electronic power steering (EPS) system, leading to loss of power steering assist. There have been some recalls related to the fuel tank straps potentially corroding and failing, which could lead to fuel leaks and fire hazards. Another potential issue is with the driver's side airbag, which may not deploy correctly in a crash. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around rust, particularly in regions that use road salt. The EcoBoost engine, while powerful, has had some reports of condensation buildup in the intercooler, leading to a stumble or hesitation upon acceleration, although Ford released a fix for this issue. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls and to thoroughly inspect the truck for rust or other signs of wear and tear before purchasing.

How long will the 2014 Ford F-150 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 Ford F-150 can easily exceed 200,000 miles and provide 10-15 years of service. Consistent oil changes, timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires, and addressing any mechanical issues promptly are crucial. Long-term durability depends heavily on preventative care. Weaknesses over time include potential rust issues, especially in colder climates, and the eventual need for more extensive repairs as components age. The 5.4L engine, if present, will likely need spark plug service at some point. Regular inspection and maintenance are key to maximizing the truck's lifespan.
Positive Owner Reviews

Jessica L.
This truck is fantastic for towing my boat. It handles well and has plenty of power. I'm very happy with its performance.
Michael R.
The F-150 is a very comfortable truck for everyday use. It's practical for hauling and has a decent amount of passenger space.
Negative Owner Reviews
Sarah M.
I bought this used a few years ago and it's been a solid truck. It's comfortable enough for long drives and has plenty of room for hauling. The interior is a bit dated, but it's functional.
Robert B.
I started having some engine trouble around 150,000 miles. It's been expensive to maintain. Other than that, it's a decent truck.
Ashley K.
I love the truck, but the gas mileage is not great. I spend a lot on fuel. Otherwise, it's a reliable vehicle.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Ford F-150 offers a range of tech and safety features, varying by trim level. Base models typically feature a basic AM/FM radio and manual windows. Higher trims like the XLT and Lariat add features such as Ford's SYNC voice-activated infotainment system, Bluetooth connectivity, and upgraded audio systems. The Lariat trim and above often include the MyFord Touch system with an 8-inch touchscreen, which allows for navigation and control of various vehicle functions.
Driver-assistance features were somewhat limited compared to modern trucks, but options included a rearview camera, parking sensors, and trailer sway control.
Safety features include standard anti-lock brakes, stability control, and multiple airbags. Optional safety features included integrated brake controller and hill descent control on some trims.
The 2014 Ford F-150 received generally good crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), though specific ratings varied slightly depending on the cab configuration. It's recommended to check the NHTSA and IIHS websites for detailed crash-test results for the specific cab style you're considering. Optional features like remote start and a sunroof were available on some higher trim levels.

2014 Ford F-150 Prices and Market Value

The 2014 Ford F-150 had a new price range from approximately $24,000 to $55,000, depending on the trim level, engine, and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $12,000 to $30,000, although this can vary greatly based on mileage, condition, and location.
Depreciation is influenced by factors like mileage, overall condition, accident history, and trim level. Higher trims like the King Ranch and Platinum generally hold their value better. The availability of the desired engine (like the EcoBoost) also affects resale value. Trucks with clean titles and well-documented maintenance history command higher prices.

2014 Ford F-150 Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Ford F-150's ownership costs can vary. Insurance premiums are average for a full-size truck. Fuel costs depend heavily on the engine choice and driving habits; the V8s and EcoBoost will consume more fuel than the base V6. Routine maintenance is generally affordable, but repairs, especially on the 5.4L engine, can be costly. Long-term ownership costs can be moderate to high depending on the vehicle's condition and how well it has been maintained. While not the most economical vehicle, its versatility and capabilities make it a justifiable expense for many.

2014 Ford F-150 Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Ford F-150 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Ford F-150 Compare to Other Truck?

The 2014 Ford F-150 competes with trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra. In terms of performance, the F-150's EcoBoost engine offers a good balance of power and fuel economy, rivaling the Silverado's V8 offerings. The Ram 1500 arguably offers a slightly more comfortable ride.
In terms of features, the F-150's higher trims offer comparable amenities to its rivals. Reliability is generally good, although the 5.4L engine's spark plug issue is a concern. The Toyota Tundra generally has a reputation for slightly better long-term reliability, but its features and fuel economy may lag behind. Price-wise, the F-150 is competitive, often offering slightly better value than the Tundra.
Alternatives to consider include the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 for its strong V8 engines and the Ram 1500 for its comfortable ride and interior. The Toyota Tundra is a good option for buyers prioritizing reliability above all else. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual needs and priorities. Each truck has its strengths and weaknesses. The F-150 provides a strong all-around package.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Ford F-150 a Good Truck?

The 2014 Ford F-150 is a solid choice for anyone needing a versatile and capable full-size truck. It's ideal for individuals or businesses requiring towing capacity, payload capability, and a comfortable ride. It's generally worth buying used, especially if you can find a well-maintained model with the EcoBoost engine or the 5.0L V8. Avoid the 5.4L engine if possible due to the spark plug issues. Higher trims like the Lariat or King Ranch offer a more luxurious experience, but even the XLT provides a good balance of features and value. Be sure to have a pre-purchase inspection done to check for any potential problems and verify maintenance records.
