Rating: 4.49
Based on 112 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2016 Ford F-150 is part of the thirteenth generation of the iconic F-Series truck, a mainstay in the American automotive landscape. It boasts a body-on-frame construction and is available in Regular Cab, SuperCab (extended), and SuperCrew (crew cab) configurations. Key trims include XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited. New pricing ranged from approximately $26,540 to $62,000. Its aluminum alloy body was groundbreaking, contributing to weight reduction and improved fuel efficiency, making it exceptionally popular.
The Good

The 2016 F-150 offers a range of powerful engine options, contributing to impressive performance. Its aluminum body enhances fuel efficiency. Inside, you'll find a comfortable and well-equipped cabin (depending on the trim). The bold design appeals to truck enthusiasts. The F-150 holds its value well, making it a practical and emotionally satisfying purchase.

The Bad

Some 2016 F-150 models experienced issues with the transmission, particularly rough shifting. The aluminum body, while beneficial for weight, can be more costly to repair after collisions. Certain owners have reported issues with the infotainment system and some electrical components. Watch out for rust on steel components underneath and around the aluminum body.

What Problems Does the 2016 Ford F-150 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 Ford F-150 often revolve around the 6-speed automatic transmission. Some owners have described experiencing rough or harsh shifting, slipping between gears, and occasional hesitation. There have also been reports of shuddering, particularly at lower speeds. Some cases required transmission replacements or software updates to mitigate these issues.
Another area of concern involves the infotainment system, specifically the SYNC 3 system. Users have reported slow response times, glitches, freezing, and difficulty connecting smartphones. Software updates were released to address some of these issues, but not all problems were completely resolved.
Some owners have also encountered issues with the door latch mechanisms, particularly in colder climates. The latches may freeze or become difficult to operate.
Recalls for the 2016 F-150 included issues related to seat belt pretensioners, which might not function properly in a crash. Certain models were recalled for potential fuel tank strap corrosion in states that use road salt, which could lead to fuel tank detachment. Other recalls addressed issues with the parking brake cable and trailer brake controller module. Long-term reliability concerns generally stem from the transmission issues and potential for corrosion on steel components due to the aluminum body, where dissimilar metal corrosion can be a factor.

How long will the 2016 Ford F-150 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Ford F-150 can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report achieving this milestone with regular oil changes, fluid flushes, and timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires.
Years of service can exceed 10-15 years with diligent care. Long-term durability hinges on addressing potential weaknesses like transmission issues and protecting against corrosion, especially in regions with harsh winters. Neglecting maintenance, particularly transmission servicing, can significantly shorten the lifespan. Keep an eye on suspension components which can wear over time, too.
Positive Owner Reviews
Robert Miller
I've used this truck for everything from hauling lumber to camping trips. It's been a dependable vehicle with plenty of power. The gas mileage isn't great, but it's a truck, so that's expected.
Sarah Johnson
I love the interior of this truck. It's very comfortable for long drives, and there's plenty of room for passengers and cargo. The technology is a bit dated now, but it still works well.
Jessica Brown
I bought this truck specifically for towing my boat, and it's performed admirably. It has plenty of power and the towing features are very helpful. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who needs a reliable tow vehicle.
Negative Owner Reviews
David Lee
Overall, I've been happy with my F-150. However, I've had some minor issues with the infotainment system and the transmission occasionally feels a little rough. Nothing major, but worth noting.
Michael Davis
It's a decent truck, but I think there are better options out there for the price. The fuel economy is disappointing, and the interior feels a bit cheap in some areas.
Amanda Rodriguez
I expected more from Ford. The ride is rough, and I've had some electrical issues. I wouldn't buy another one.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Ford F-150's built-in tech varies by trim level. Lower trims offer basic features like an AM/FM radio and auxiliary input. Higher trims boast Ford's SYNC 3 infotainment system, featuring an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto compatibility (depending on software updates). Navigation is available as an option.
Driver-assistance features include available blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and a rearview camera (standard on most trims). A 360-degree camera system is available on higher trims, offering enhanced visibility.
Safety features encompass standard anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a full complement of airbags. Optional safety features included inflatable rear seatbelts.
Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) give the 2016 F-150 a 5-star overall safety rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rated the 2016 F-150 as "Good" in several crash tests, with varying scores depending on the cab configuration. Ratings may differ slightly based on specific configurations.

2016 Ford F-150 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Ford F-150 ranged from around $26,540 for a base XL model to over $62,000 for a fully loaded Limited trim. Current used market prices vary greatly depending on condition, mileage, and trim, but typically range from approximately $18,000 to $35,000.
The F-150 generally holds its value well due to its popularity and reputation. However, higher mileage, accidents, and lack of maintenance records can significantly impact resale value. Diesel engines (though not available in 2016) often command a premium on the used market. Trim levels like Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum tend to retain more value than base trims due to their added features and desirability.

2016 Ford F-150 Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2016 Ford F-150 are generally moderate, but can increase with higher trims and engine options. Fuel costs vary based on engine choice and driving habits. Maintenance costs are typical for a full-size truck, with regular oil changes, tire rotations, and fluid flushes required. Repairs to the aluminum body can be more expensive than steel. Overall, the F-150 is neither the most economical nor the most costly truck to own, sitting in the middle range, but potential transmission issues could increase long-term costs.

2016 Ford F-150 Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Ford F-150 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Ford F-150 Compare to Other Truck?

The 2016 Ford F-150 competes with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra. In terms of performance, the F-150's EcoBoost engines offer a strong blend of power and fuel efficiency, often outperforming rivals' base V6 engines. The Ram 1500 generally offers a more comfortable ride, particularly with its available air suspension. The Toyota Tundra has a reputation for excellent reliability, potentially surpassing the F-150 in that area.
In terms of features, the F-150 offers a wide range of tech and convenience options, competitive with the Silverado/Sierra twins. However, the Ram 1500's interior design and material quality are often considered superior.
The price of the F-150 is generally competitive within its class, but used prices can vary significantly based on condition and trim.
Alternatives to the 2016 F-150 include the 2016 Ram 1500 for ride comfort and interior quality, and the 2016 Toyota Tundra for long-term reliability. The Silverado/Sierra are comparable in many respects, making them worthwhile alternatives depending on individual preferences.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Ford F-150 a Good Truck?

The 2016 Ford F-150 is a versatile truck suitable for a wide range of buyers, from those needing a capable work truck to those seeking a comfortable and feature-rich daily driver. It's worth buying if you need a truck with strong performance, good fuel economy (with the EcoBoost engines), and a wide range of available features.
However, it's crucial to thoroughly inspect any used 2016 F-150 for potential transmission issues and corrosion. Higher trims like Lariat or King Ranch offer a better balance of features and value. Consider a newer model year if reliability is a top priority or the budget allows.

Reliable Workhorse

I've used this truck for everything from hauling lumber to camping trips. It's been a dependable vehicle with plenty of power. The gas mileage isn't great, but it's a truck, so that's expected.

Comfortable and Spacious

I love the interior of this truck. It's very comfortable for long drives, and there's plenty of room for passengers and cargo. The technology is a bit dated now, but it still works well.

Good Truck, Some Issues

Overall, I've been happy with my F-150. However, I've had some minor issues with the infotainment system and the transmission occasionally feels a little rough. Nothing major, but worth noting.

Decent Truck, But Could Be Better

It's a decent truck, but I think there are better options out there for the price. The fuel economy is disappointing, and the interior feels a bit cheap in some areas.
