What Problems Does the 2018 Ford F-150 Have?

Several issues have been reported for the 2018 Ford F-150. The 10-speed automatic transmission is a common source of complaints, with owners experiencing hard or erratic shifting. Some have noted hesitation or jerking during acceleration. Issues with the SYNC 3 infotainment system, including freezing, unresponsive touchscreens, and Bluetooth connectivity problems, are also reported.
Engine issues, particularly with the EcoBoost engines, include potential for excessive oil consumption and turbocharger problems. There have been recalls related to various issues, including improperly welded seat frames, tailgate malfunctions, and potential for engine fires due to fuel leaks. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the complexity of the newer engine and transmission technologies. The aluminum body, while reducing weight, can be more expensive to repair after collisions. Careful maintenance and addressing issues promptly are crucial for long-term reliability.

How long will the 2018 Ford F-150 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2018 Ford F-150 can realistically achieve 200,000 miles or more and provide 10-15 years of service. Regular oil changes, transmission servicing, and addressing any mechanical issues promptly are essential. Long-term durability can be affected by the 10-speed transmission, which some owners find problematic over time. The aluminum body is resistant to rust but more susceptible to dents and dings. Engines, if maintained properly, are typically durable. The electrical system and infotainment systems can be weaknesses, potentially requiring repairs as the vehicle ages.
Positive Owner Reviews
John S.
This truck has been a dependable partner for my business. It's got the power I need for hauling and the comfort for long drives. Maintenance has been reasonable, and I'm generally happy with its performance.
Sarah M.
We use this F-150 as our primary family vehicle. It's spacious, safe, and the ride is surprisingly smooth. The technology is a bit dated compared to newer models, but it still does the job.
David L.
I bought this used and I feel like I got a great deal. It's a solid truck with plenty of life left in it. Fuel economy could be better, but that's expected with a truck this size.
Negative Owner Reviews
Jessica K.
The only real downside I've found is the turning radius. It can be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces. Otherwise, it's a great truck.
Ashley G.
The paint on my truck is starting to chip and fade, which is disappointing. I've heard this is a common problem with this model year. Otherwise, I like the truck.
Karen T.
While the truck is fine for short drives, the seats become uncomfortable on longer journeys. I wish they had more support. The overall performance of the truck is good though.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2018 Ford F-150 offers a range of tech and safety features. Standard features on lower trims include a basic audio system and rearview camera. Higher trims boast the SYNC 3 infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
Driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking. Optional features include a 360-degree camera system, trailer sway control, and park assist.
In terms of safety, the 2018 F-150 performed well in crash tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave it good ratings in several crash tests, with some variations depending on the cab configuration. These safety features and good crash test ratings contribute to the overall safety and appeal of the 2018 Ford F-150.

2018 Ford F-150 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2018 Ford F-150 ranged from approximately $28,000 to over $70,000, depending on the trim and options. As of late 2023, used market prices typically range from $25,000 to $45,000, influenced by mileage, condition, trim level, and location. The F-150 holds its value relatively well compared to other vehicles. Higher trims and those with desirable features (like the 3.5L EcoBoost engine or 4x4) tend to depreciate less. Accidents, high mileage, and poor maintenance negatively impact resale value.

2018 Ford F-150 Cost of Ownership

The 2018 Ford F-150 can be moderately costly to own. Insurance premiums are average for its class. Fuel costs vary depending on the engine, with the EcoBoost engines offering better fuel economy than the V8. Routine maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations) is relatively affordable. However, repairs, especially related to the transmission or complex engine components, can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance habits and the specific engine chosen.

2018 Ford F-150 Insurance

Insurance for a 2018 Ford F-150 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2018 Ford F-150 Compare to Other Truck?

The 2018 Ford F-150 competes with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ram 1500, and Toyota Tundra. In terms of performance, the F-150's EcoBoost engines offer strong power and good fuel economy, often outperforming the Silverado's base engines. The Ram 1500 often provides a more comfortable ride thanks to its rear coil springs (vs. the F-150's leaf springs). The Tundra is known for its reliability, though its technology lags behind the F-150.
Feature-wise, the F-150 offers a wide array of technology and driver-assistance features, often surpassing the Tundra and Silverado in lower trims. Reliability can be a concern for some F-150 owners, while the Tundra generally enjoys a better reputation for longevity. Price-wise, the F-150 is typically competitive.
Alternatives depend on priorities. If reliability is paramount, the Tundra is a solid choice. If ride comfort is key, the Ram 1500 is worth considering. The Silverado is a competent all-around truck but might not excel in any particular area like the F-150 does with its EcoBoost engines and technology offerings.

Final Verdict: Is the 2018 Ford F-150 a Good Truck?

The 2018 Ford F-150 is a versatile truck suitable for a wide range of buyers, from those needing a reliable workhorse to those wanting a comfortable and tech-filled daily driver. It's worth buying, especially on the used market, if you prioritize strong engine performance and a wide range of available features. However, prospective buyers should carefully inspect any used F-150, paying close attention to the transmission and service history. Opting for a lower-mileage example with a well-documented maintenance record is recommended. Consider higher trims (Lariat or above) for enhanced comfort and technology, but be aware that these will command a higher price.

Great Truck for the Family

We use this F-150 as our primary family vehicle. It's spacious, safe, and the ride is surprisingly smooth. The technology is a bit dated compared to newer models, but it still does the job.

Good Value for the Price

I bought this used and I feel like I got a great deal. It's a solid truck with plenty of life left in it. Fuel economy could be better, but that's expected with a truck this size.

Turning Radius is Challenging

The only real downside I've found is the turning radius. It can be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces. Otherwise, it's a great truck.

Seats Aren't Comfortable on Long Trips

While the truck is fine for short drives, the seats become uncomfortable on longer journeys. I wish they had more support. The overall performance of the truck is good though.
