What Problems Does the 2006 Subaru Forester Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2006 Subaru Forester often revolve around the 2.5L engine, particularly the non-turbo variants. Head gasket failure is a common issue, potentially leading to coolant leaks and overheating. Oil consumption is another concern, requiring owners to regularly check and top off the oil level. Rust can develop, especially in areas exposed to road salt, affecting the undercarriage and body panels.

Recalls for the 2006 Forester have addressed issues such as potential fuel leakage due to faulty fuel filler pipes and problems with the brake light switch. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN against recall databases to ensure all necessary repairs have been performed.

Long-term reliability concerns include the aforementioned engine problems, along with potential issues with the automatic transmission in higher mileage vehicles. The XT trim's turbocharger can require expensive repairs if not properly maintained, including regular oil changes and avoiding aggressive driving when the engine is cold. Regular maintenance and addressing minor issues promptly can significantly extend the lifespan of the 2006 Forester.

How long will the 2006 Subaru Forester last?

With proper maintenance, a 2006 Subaru Forester can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding 250,000 miles with consistent care. However, long-term durability hinges on addressing known weaknesses. The head gasket issue is paramount; proactive replacement can prevent more severe engine damage. Rust prevention is also critical, especially in colder climates. Regular fluid changes (oil, coolant, transmission fluid) are essential. Neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten the vehicle's lifespan and lead to costly repairs. The turbocharger on the XT model requires extra attention.

The Forester isn't the flashiest but it is the most reliable car I have ever owned. 150k miles and still running just fine. It is comfortable and drives very well. The kind of car that will easily surpass the 300k mile mark.

Negative Owner Reviews
Auenv96
Ive had my forester about 3 years. The only problem Ive had is with the gas door other than that the car has been flawless. Believe me when I say it will do anything. I've pulled an 18 ft pontoon boat out of a lake with out the benefit of a ramp...didn't spin at all; towed 1/2 pallets of sod; moved a 4 bedroom house; and I use it as a work vehicle taking it to constructions sites where I have to drive thru deep sand and ruts...the awd is a life saver. Who needs a gas guzzling truck?? Just get a Forester and an 8x4 utility trailer and go to it.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2006 Subaru Forester's built-in tech is relatively basic by modern standards. Entertainment features typically included a standard AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered upgraded sound systems, sometimes with a 6-disc CD changer. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) available at the time.

Safety features included standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), front airbags, and side-impact airbags in some trims. Electronic stability control (ESC) was not standard but available on some models. Optional features included a sunroof, heated front seats, and automatic climate control.

Crash test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) are generally favorable. The 2006 Forester received "Good" ratings in frontal offset and side impact crash tests. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also provided crash test ratings, which should be consulted for specific details. While lacking modern technology, the 2006 Forester prioritized basic safety features and performed reasonably well in crash tests for its time. However, it lacks the advanced safety technologies common in newer vehicles, such as blind-spot monitoring or automatic emergency braking.

2006 Subaru Forester Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2006 Subaru Forester ranged from approximately $20,000 to $28,000, depending on the trim and options. Currently, used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant due to age. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition (rust-free examples command a premium), mileage, maintenance history, and whether it has the desirable XT trim with the turbo engine. A clean title and documented service records also boost resale value. Examples with known head gasket issues or excessive rust will sell for significantly less.

2006 Subaru Forester Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2006 Subaru Forester are typically moderate. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially for the non-turbo models, although the XT's turbo engine consumes more fuel. Maintenance costs can be moderate to high, mainly due to potential head gasket issues and the cost of maintaining the all-wheel-drive system. Repair costs can be unpredictable, depending on the extent of any problems. Long-term ownership costs can be higher than average if significant repairs are needed, making preventative maintenance crucial for economical ownership.

2006 Subaru Forester Insurance

Insurance for a 2006 Subaru Forester is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2006 Subaru Forester Compare to Other Wagon?

Key rivals to the 2006 Subaru Forester included the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Mazda Tribute. In terms of performance, the Forester XT, with its turbo engine, offered a sportier driving experience than most competitors. However, the non-turbo Forester's performance was comparable. Feature-wise, the Forester was generally well-equipped for its price point, although some competitors offered more advanced features.

Reliability is a mixed bag. While Subaru has a reputation for durability, the Forester's head gasket issues can be a concern compared to the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, which are known for their exceptional reliability. Price-wise, the Forester was generally competitive.

Alternatives to the 2006 Forester include the Honda CR-V, which offers superior reliability, and the Toyota RAV4, which also boasts excellent reliability and a spacious interior. If performance is a priority, a used Mazda Tribute with the V6 engine could be considered, though reliability might be a concern. Ultimately, the best alternative depends on the buyer's priorities: reliability, performance, or price.

Final Verdict: Is the 2006 Subaru Forester a Good Wagon?

The 2006 Subaru Forester is ideal for buyers seeking a capable and practical compact SUV with standard all-wheel drive. It's worth buying as a used vehicle if found in good condition with documented maintenance history. The XT trim is desirable for those prioritizing performance, but requires more diligent maintenance. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is crucial, especially to check for head gasket issues and rust. If reliability is paramount, consider the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 instead. However, for those who value AWD and are willing to address potential maintenance needs, the 2006 Forester remains a solid choice.

Love my Subaru!

My only Osijek so far is I bought it so Iโ€™d have room to put my grandchildrenโ€™s car seat in back. Very little leg room for them

Most reliable car I have ever owned.

This car is so much fun to own and drive. The Turbo and manual 5-speed makes this an exciting car to drive. It has more power than the BMW I once owned. You will never regret owning this car.

Think hard over 100k miles...

I recently purchased the L.L. Bean edition. Everyone kept saying how wonderful Subs are. I'm sure they're great new. But not fond of the gas mileage for a 4 cyl. Also interior isn't comfortable after 100k. Parts are pricy, and doing 70 in the wind, well, it feels like it wants to topple over. Not satisfied. Also, getting from dealer, sold to me for 7k, being over a decade old.

Safest vehicle I've ever driven

My last Subaru was rear and side swiped by others many times. The last time blew the airbags. I walked away from it because the car is designed for saftey. It is mid range economical on gas, requires easy maintenance, and holds its resale value
