The 2013 Nissan Frontier is a mid-size pickup truck that has been a popular choice for buyers seeking a reliable and capable vehicle without the bulk of a full-size truck. Available in King Cab and Crew Cab body styles, it offered several trims including the S, SV, SL, and PRO-4X. Pricing ranged approximately from $18,000 to $30,000 when new. Its ruggedness, affordability, and variety of configurations made it a standout in its class.
The Good

The 2013 Nissan Frontier offers a blend of practicality and rugged appeal. Its strong V6 engine provides ample power for towing and hauling. Renowned for its reliability, it assures peace of mind. The PRO-4X trim provides off-road capability, appealing to adventurous buyers. Affordability and solid build quality represent excellent value for money.

The Bad

While generally reliable, the 2013 Nissan Frontier can suffer from potential issues such as timing chain wear, especially in earlier models. Interior materials are basic and may feel dated. Fuel economy isn't class-leading. Rust can be a concern in regions with harsh winters, so inspect the frame carefully before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2013 Nissan Frontier Have?

The 2013 Nissan Frontier, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. One common issue is potential timing chain noise or failure, particularly on earlier models of the second generation (2005-2010). Symptoms include a rattling sound upon startup. This issue can be costly to repair. Another area of concern is the radiator. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission cooler integrated into the radiator failing, leading to coolant mixing with transmission fluid, which can cause significant transmission damage. Regular inspection of the coolant and transmission fluid is recommended.

Rust is another potential problem, especially in regions that use road salt. Inspect the frame, particularly around welds and suspension mounting points. Check for recalls related to airbags or other safety equipment on the NHTSA website. Long-term reliability is generally good, but preventative maintenance is essential. Some owners have also reported issues with the electronic door locks and window regulators. Overall, the 2013 Frontier is relatively dependable but requires careful inspection and maintenance, especially given its age.

How long will the 2013 Nissan Frontier last?

With proper maintenance, a 2013 Nissan Frontier can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Expect 15-20 years of service, depending on driving conditions and maintenance. Long-term durability is a strong point, but weaknesses include potential rust issues, timing chain wear (addressed in later model years but still a concern), and the radiator/transmission cooler issue. Regular fluid changes, rustproofing, and careful monitoring of engine sounds are crucial for maximizing longevity. Neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten the lifespan.

Terrance was honest and straight forward to get me in price range I wanted. Financing was the quickest process I ever experienced in buying a vehicle. I would recommend them to buy a used car.
Negative Owner Reviews

The gap between the cab and the bed where you can see the hinges is so poorly designed I didn't even want to drive or talk about buying this auto. You should be ashamed for such body parts aligning themselves to be non fitting.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Nissan Frontier's tech and safety features are relatively basic compared to modern vehicles. Standard features include air conditioning, a basic audio system (AM/FM radio with CD player), and limited driver-assistance technologies. Higher trims like the SL and PRO-4X offer upgrades such as a Rockford Fosgate audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. However, advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, or adaptive cruise control were not available.

Safety features include standard front airbags, side-impact airbags, and anti-lock brakes (ABS). Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and traction control are also standard. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2013 Frontier mixed ratings. While it performed well in some crash tests, it received a "Marginal" rating in the small overlap front crash test. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave it an overall rating of four out of five stars. Keep in mind that safety standards have evolved since 2013, so newer vehicles generally offer superior safety technology and crash protection. Consider these factors when evaluating the 2013 Frontier's safety.

2013 Nissan Frontier Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Nissan Frontier ranged from approximately $18,000 to $30,000, depending on the trim and configuration. As of late 2023/early 2024, used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $18,000, again depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Frontier has depreciated significantly, but its reputation for reliability helps maintain reasonable resale value. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, maintenance history, trim level (PRO-4X models tend to hold their value better), and location (trucks are often more valuable in areas where they are commonly used for work or recreation).

2013 Nissan Frontier Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Nissan Frontier is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is average for the class, but not exceptional. Maintenance is relatively straightforward and affordable, and parts are readily available. Repairs can be more costly if issues like timing chain failure or transmission problems arise. However, with regular maintenance, the Frontier presents a reasonably priced option for long-term ownership. Budget for potential rust prevention and repairs.

Insurance for a 2013 Nissan Frontier is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Nissan Frontier Compare to Other Truck?

The 2013 Nissan Frontier competes with the Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, and GMC Canyon. Compared to the Tacoma, the Frontier offers a similar level of reliability but typically at a lower price point. The Tacoma holds its value better, however. The Colorado and Canyon offer slightly more modern interiors and potentially better fuel economy, but may not match the Frontier's proven reliability record. In terms of features, the Frontier lags behind newer rivals, lacking advanced safety technologies.

If reliability and affordability are top priorities, the Frontier is a solid choice. However, if you require more modern features or better fuel economy, consider a newer Colorado/Canyon or a Tacoma. A 2013 Tacoma might be a better alternative if resale value is a primary concern, despite the higher initial cost. Each truck has its strengths, so weigh your priorities carefully. If off-roading is a key interest, the PRO-4X trim of the Frontier is competitive.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Nissan Frontier a Good Truck?

The 2013 Nissan Frontier is a good choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable and capable mid-size truck. It's ideal for those who need a truck for occasional hauling, towing, or off-road adventures without requiring the latest technology or luxury features. It is worth buying if you find a well-maintained example with a clean service history and no signs of rust or timing chain issues. Consider the PRO-4X trim for off-road use. Given its age, buying used is the only option. Have it inspected by a trusted mechanic before purchasing to address potential issues.

It’s only 7 years old and won’t pass the smog test. The steering capability is not good wont steer completely like it won’t turn to both directions well especially when ur making a left turn, takes several attempts to make the turn .

Great look/style for a truck

This is a fantastic truck. Plenty of power for what I need. Interior feels great. Bed size is more than adequate. Exterior looks sharp. Overall, better than I imagined.

Great truck except for......

Great truck except for it is not easy to work on, and it has low head-clearance when getting into it and exiting it. Just changing the oil is a pain; very poor design for such a basic maintenance. Otherwise, it's a great truck!

1995 Nissan hardbody XE 21yrs traded in for 2013

Turn radius is lame, And now the paint is falling off. I dont think this vehicle will last 21 yrs like my other truck did. It does have lots of power to get up and go. Seems to have electrical issues also. Its only 5 yrs old and well maintained. I have had it 2 yrs ,the paint is coming off in sheets and flakes as i drive. Its black and just the hood right now.

Reliable and rugged

Loved it. Owned one for several years. By far more superior than the Tacoma! The crew cab had enough space for a family of four (fit car seats easily), yet still had a rugged look with strong towing capacity.
