The 2013 Honda Ridgeline is a unique pickup truck known for its car-like ride and innovative features. Introduced in 2006, the Ridgeline offers a unibody construction, unlike traditional body-on-frame trucks. The 2013 model represents the final year of the first generation. Key trims include RT, RTS, Sport, RTL, and RTL with Navigation. Pricing ranged from approximately $30,000 to $37,000 when new. Its standout features are the In-Bed Trunk and Dual-Action Tailgate, increasing practicality and appeal to buyers seeking versatility.
The Good

The 2013 Honda Ridgeline offers a comfortable ride and surprisingly nimble handling for a pickup. Honda's reputation for reliability is a major draw. Its unique design and clever features like the In-Bed Trunk appeal to emotional buyers. Practical buyers appreciate the comfortable cabin, decent fuel economy (for a truck), and strong resale value. It delivers a blend of truck utility and car-like refinement.

The Bad

The 2013 Honda Ridgeline's weaknesses include its lower towing capacity compared to traditional body-on-frame trucks. Its fuel economy, while decent, isn't class-leading. The styling can be polarizing. Potential buyers should watch out for potential rust issues, especially in areas with road salt, and ensure the rear differential fluid has been regularly changed to prevent issues.

What Problems Does the 2013 Honda Ridgeline Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2013 Honda Ridgeline, and earlier models, often revolve around the automatic transmission. Some owners have reported rough shifting or transmission failure at higher mileages. Regular transmission fluid changes are crucial. Another common issue is related to the variable timing solenoid which can cause the vehicle to stall. Rear differential issues, particularly with the VTM-4 system in AWD models, are also reported; consistent fluid changes are vital to prevent costly repairs. Rust can be a concern, especially in areas with heavy road salt usage. Inspect the undercarriage and body panels carefully. Some owners have also reported issues with the air conditioning system, particularly the compressor. While the Ridgeline is generally reliable, these are the areas to pay close attention to during inspection and maintenance. There were no major recalls specifically affecting the 2013 model year that address widespread mechanical failures, but it's always best to check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information based on the VIN.

How long will the 2013 Honda Ridgeline last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2013 Honda Ridgeline can easily reach 200,000 miles or more and provide 15+ years of service. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid services, and rear differential fluid changes are essential. Long-term durability is generally good, but weaknesses can emerge in the transmission, rear differential (AWD models), and suspension components. Rust prevention is key to extending its lifespan, especially in colder climates. The engine itself is typically robust, but neglecting scheduled maintenance will shorten its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Honda Ridgeline offers a respectable array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment features include a six-speaker audio system with a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims offer upgraded audio systems, satellite radio, and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. The RTL with Navigation includes a navigation system with voice recognition and a rearview camera. Bluetooth connectivity is available on the RTL with Navigation trim.

Safety features include anti-lock brakes (ABS), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with traction control, and front and side airbags. Driver-assistance features are limited compared to modern vehicles. There's no blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning.

Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) are generally good for the 2013 Ridgeline, providing a safe environment for occupants. It received four out of five stars for overall safety from NHTSA. The IIHS gave the Ridgeline a "Good" rating in most crash tests, though roof strength was rated as "Acceptable". Features like the rearview camera (on some trims) were helpful for parking and maneuvering but not considered standard driver-assistance technology like found in current models.

2013 Honda Ridgeline Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Honda Ridgeline ranged from approximately $30,000 to $37,000 depending on the trim level. Current used market prices typically range from $12,000 to $20,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim. The Ridgeline holds its value relatively well due to Honda's reputation for reliability and the truck's unique features. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition command higher prices. Factors affecting resale value include the truck's condition, maintenance history, and whether it has desirable features like navigation or all-wheel drive. Higher trims (RTL) with lower mileage generally hold their value best. Rust and deferred maintenance negatively impact resale value significantly.

2013 Honda Ridgeline Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Honda Ridgeline's ownership costs are generally moderate. Insurance rates are typically average for a mid-size pickup. Fuel costs are reasonable, though not exceptional, given the V6 engine. Maintenance is generally affordable, thanks to Honda's reliable engineering. However, potential repairs to the transmission or rear differential can be costly. Overall, the Ridgeline is neither exceptionally economical nor excessively costly to own, assuming routine maintenance is performed. Neglecting maintenance, especially fluid changes, significantly increases long-term costs.

2013 Honda Ridgeline Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Honda Ridgeline is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Honda Ridgeline Compare to Other Truck?

The 2013 Honda Ridgeline competes with mid-size trucks like the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, and Chevrolet Colorado. Compared to these body-on-frame rivals, the Ridgeline offers a more comfortable ride and better handling. However, it lags in towing capacity and off-road capability. The Tacoma is known for its exceptional reliability and strong resale value, making it a solid alternative for those prioritizing those factors. The Frontier is a more budget-friendly option but lacks the Ridgeline's refinement. The Colorado offers a more traditional truck experience with higher towing capacity. The Ridgeline stands out with its unique In-Bed Trunk and Dual-Action Tailgate, giving it an edge in practicality for certain buyers. For buyers prioritizing comfort, ride quality, and innovative features over raw towing power, the Ridgeline is a good choice. However, for those needing serious towing or off-road prowess, the Tacoma or Colorado are better alternatives. Consider a newer Honda Ridgeline (if budget allows) for updated technology and improved fuel economy.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Honda Ridgeline a Good Truck?

The 2013 Honda Ridgeline is ideal for buyers who need a truck for occasional hauling and DIY projects but prioritize comfort and a car-like driving experience. It's worth buying as a used vehicle if you can find one in good condition with a well-documented maintenance history. Look for RTL trims for added features like leather and navigation. Avoid examples with excessive rust or signs of deferred maintenance. If you need serious towing capacity or plan on extensive off-roading, other trucks are more suitable. However, for its unique blend of practicality and comfort, the 2013 Ridgeline remains a compelling choice, especially at its current used prices. Consider a pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic.

Very great pickup

I have 389,xxx miles and it still runs just fine. One thing I've noticed is some electrical issues with the driver side window switch and the interior button lights are only halfway working and tend to go completely out but will come back on if I switch the headlight knob off & back on. I love the 2-way open tailgate & bed trunk.

Very good truck.

I bought this truck used, not even really wanting it to begin with. But after driving a few other vehicles that I wanted first, I am really glad I got this instead. It has even a better feel than most cars I have ridden in. It doesn't have the bulky body roll when going around corners. I do wish the bed was a little bigger. But I really like the hidden trunk.

2013 Ridgeline Sport with 114,600 miles

After owning 11 Honda's/Acura's over the past 25 years, when I needed a pickup, my choice was a 7 year old Ridgeline Sport with 3 previous owners and 114,600 miles. This truck was absolutely the best choice for a previously owned vehicle. I have uses it as a truck, hauling just about everything, and it lives up to the durability of the Honda pedigree.
