2010 Nissan Frontier Overview, Reviews, Ratings & Specs

Rating: 4.34
Based on 46 Owner Reviews â–¶
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2010 Nissan Frontier is a compact pickup truck, part of the second generation (D40) introduced in 2005. It's available in King Cab and Crew Cab body styles. Key trims include XE, SE, LE (later SL), and PRO-4X. Its popularity stems from its ruggedness, capable off-road performance (especially the PRO-4X), and a more manageable size than full-size trucks. The original MSRP ranged from roughly $17,000 to $30,000, but used prices vary greatly. It stood out for offering a V6 engine when some competitors only offered four-cylinders, and for its bed utility features.
The Good

The 2010 Frontier offers decent performance with its available V6 engine, appealing to those seeking power. It's generally regarded as reliable, attracting practical buyers. The PRO-4X trim offers off-road capability, sparking emotional appeal. Its design is functional and durable. It provides good value for the price, balancing capability with affordability. Comfort levels are adequate for a truck in its class. Fuel efficiency is average for its segment.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2010 Frontier include a somewhat dated interior design and materials. Fuel economy, while average, isn't exceptional. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission "SMOD" (Strawberry Milkshake of Death), where the radiator cooler leaks into the transmission, so checking the transmission fluid is critical. The turning radius can feel large in tight spaces.

Analysis

What Problems Does the 2010 Nissan Frontier Have?

The 2010 Nissan Frontier, like other models in its generation, has some frequently reported problems. The most significant concern is the "SMOD" (Strawberry Milkshake of Death) issue, where the transmission cooler integrated into the radiator can leak, contaminating the transmission fluid. This can lead to catastrophic transmission failure. While this issue is more prevalent in earlier model years of the D40 generation, it's still a concern for the 2010 model. Regular inspection and replacement of the radiator are recommended preventative measures.
Other reported issues include problems with the timing chain tensioner, which can cause engine noise and potential engine damage if not addressed. Some owners have reported issues with the front differential seals leaking, particularly on 4x4 models. Rust can also be a concern, especially in areas with harsh winters and road salt. Check the frame and undercarriage for excessive corrosion.
Recalls for the 2010 Frontier might vary depending on the specific VIN. It's crucial to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any outstanding recalls related to the vehicle. The Takata airbag recall affected many vehicles, including Nissan models, so it's essential to ensure that the airbag recall has been addressed.
Long-term reliability concerns mainly revolve around the aforementioned issues, particularly the potential for transmission failure due to SMOD. Proper maintenance, including regular fluid changes and inspections, is crucial for mitigating these risks.

How long will the 2010 Nissan Frontier last?

With proper maintenance, a 2010 Nissan Frontier can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report over 250,000 miles with consistent upkeep. The longevity heavily depends on addressing potential issues like the SMOD and timing chain tensioner proactively. Durability is generally good, but weaknesses emerge over time, including rust in colder climates, wear and tear on suspension components, and potential electrical issues. Regular fluid changes (engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, differential fluid) are crucial for maximizing lifespan. Neglecting maintenance will significantly reduce the vehicle's lifespan.

The Nissan Frontier is a solid truck built to last. I drove mine for 6 years with zero issues. The lava lining bedliner is nearly indestructible. Got power in all the right places (Windows, locks, mirrors) and none of the unnecessary frills that cost an arm and a leg if they break. I never used it for towing so I can't comment on that capability, but the V6 engine felt well powered for the size of the truck. The only reason why I'm not still driving mine is because it wasn't a 4x4 and I'm moving to a land of snow.
Negative Owner Reviews
nissan froniter
this truck has a very bad transmission and is costly too fix , it has a bad radiator, bad fuel gauge ,and cadillac converter. and to fix all of this for this truck is very costly, do not buy used at all this is a bad truck.
disappointed
Do not buy. The Frontier front suspension is horrible. The truck will not track straight on the road, has sever bump steer, the shocks a lousy even after replacing them with $300 Bilsteins the truck shutters when I encounter a manhole cover. The auto transmission bogs during the upshift between 1st & 2nd gears, in lieu of accelerating. The brake feel is unsubstaintial. You think that you're going to be stopping but the pedal feel is fooling you. Where in fact you haven't slowed much, now you better been hitting the brakes harder before it's too late.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Nissan Frontier features relatively basic tech for its time. Standard features include an AM/FM radio, and on higher trims, a CD player with MP3 playback. Optional entertainment features included a Rockford Fosgate audio system with a subwoofer on the LE/SL trim. Navigation was available as an option on higher trims.
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were standard. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Traction Control System (TCS) were also standard, improving safety. The PRO-4X trim included off-road-specific features like hill descent control and an electronic locking rear differential.
Safety features include standard front airbags, side-impact airbags, and side-curtain airbags.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) varied. While specific ratings should be verified for the 2010 model year on their respective websites, the Frontier generally received decent scores in frontal and side-impact crash tests. Rollover ratings were typically lower, as is common for trucks and SUVs. Checking the NHTSA and IIHS websites for the most accurate and specific crash test results for the 2010 Nissan Frontier is recommended for prospective buyers.

2010 Nissan Frontier Prices and Market Value

The 2010 Nissan Frontier's original MSRP ranged from approximately $17,000 to $30,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices vary widely based on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find them ranging from $7,000 to $15,000 or more. Depreciation has been moderate, with the Frontier holding its value reasonably well compared to some other vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the condition of the truck, mileage, whether it's a 4x4 model (which typically commands a higher price), and the presence of the PRO-4X package. Trucks with documented maintenance history also tend to fetch higher prices.

2010 Nissan Frontier Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2010 Nissan Frontier are typically moderate, comparable to other compact trucks. Fuel costs depend on driving habits and engine choice, but are average for its class. Maintenance is generally affordable, but potential repairs like the SMOD issue can be costly. Overall, the Frontier is relatively economical to own, provided preventative maintenance is performed and potential problems are addressed promptly. Avoiding major repairs like transmission failure is key to keeping long-term costs down.

2010 Nissan Frontier Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Nissan Frontier is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Nissan Frontier Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2010 Nissan Frontier competes with the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, and Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon. In terms of performance, the Frontier's V6 engine offers comparable power to the Tacoma's V6 but surpasses the base engines of the Colorado/Canyon. The Tacoma generally holds an edge in resale value and perceived reliability. The Ford Ranger, at this time, offered a less powerful engine and a more dated design.
Regarding features, the Tacoma and Colorado/Canyon offered comparable tech and comfort options, though the Frontier's interior can feel dated compared to the Tacoma. The PRO-4X trim provides competitive off-road capability against the Tacoma TRD Off-Road.
In terms of price, the Frontier often presents a more affordable option on the used market compared to the Tacoma. However, the Tacoma's strong resale value means that even used models command a premium.
Alternatives: If reliability and resale value are paramount, the Toyota Tacoma is a better choice, albeit at a higher price. If you prioritize a more modern interior and features, the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon (later models) are worth considering. However, for a balance of capability, affordability, and reasonable reliability, the 2010 Nissan Frontier remains a solid option, especially for those seeking a capable and less expensive alternative to the Tacoma. If you are really after long-term reliability with a V6 and bed utility features then the Tacoma is worth the price premium.

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Nissan Frontier a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2010 Nissan Frontier is ideal for buyers seeking a capable and affordable compact pickup truck. It's a good choice for those who need a truck for occasional hauling, off-road adventures (PRO-4X), or as a daily driver. It is worth buying, especially on the used market, if you are aware of the potential "SMOD" issue and perform a thorough inspection before purchase. Opting for a well-maintained model with documented service history is crucial. The PRO-4X trim is recommended for off-road enthusiasts. If reliability and resale are the main priority, then look at the Toyota Tacoma, but expect to pay more. Avoiding models with known transmission issues is very important.

No complaints with this one!

Function, comfort, and reliability all in one well designed package. Has all the comforts I could want (A/C, power steering, locks, brakes, mirrors), but keeps everything else simple in design and function (none of the digital frills that cost and arm and a leg to fix). Comfortably seats 5 adults with room in the bed for surfboards, bikes, etc. Drives very smooth for a truck. Good power and fuel efficiency for a V6. I have driven mine for over six years with no issues. I would purchase again in a heartbeat!
