The 2010 Dodge Dakota is a mid-size pickup truck, offering a blend of truck capability and car-like comfort. It was available in regular cab and extended cab (Club Cab) configurations. Model years ranged from 1987 to 2011. Key trims included ST, Big Horn (Lone Star in Texas), TRX, and Laramie. New, it ranged roughly from $22,000 to $32,000. It stood out for offering V8 power in a smaller package than full-size trucks.
The Good

The 2010 Dodge Dakota offered a strong blend of practicality and appeal. Its V8 engine provided ample power for towing and hauling (performance). The design offered a muscular and aggressive look (emotional). While not class-leading, its reliability was decent. It was also generally less expensive than full-size trucks (value).

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2010 Dodge Dakota included fuel economy, which was poor, especially with the V8. Interior materials were often criticized for being low-quality. Reliability, while acceptable, wasn't as stellar as some competitors. Check for rust, especially in areas with road salt.

What Problems Does the 2010 Dodge Dakota Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2010 Dodge Dakota often revolve around electrical issues, including malfunctioning sensors and problems with the anti-lock braking system (ABS). Some owners have reported issues with the 4.7L V8 engine, such as oil leaks and occasional engine misfires. Rust can be a significant issue, particularly in regions where road salt is used. Check the frame, rocker panels, and other areas prone to corrosion.
Recalls for the 2010 Dodge Dakota have included issues related to the fuel tank and potential fuel leaks. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to see if any recalls apply.
Long-term reliability concerns often center on the automatic transmission, which can experience slippage or rough shifting as the vehicle ages. The suspension components, such as ball joints and tie rod ends, may also require replacement over time. Routine maintenance, including regular oil changes and fluid checks, is crucial to mitigating these long-term reliability concerns.

How long will the 2010 Dodge Dakota last?

With proper maintenance, a 2010 Dodge Dakota can reasonably last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 12-15 years. However, longevity highly depends on maintenance. Neglecting oil changes, allowing rust to accumulate, and ignoring minor repairs will shorten its lifespan. Weaknesses include potential rust issues, electrical problems, and wear on suspension components. Keeping up with scheduled maintenance and addressing issues promptly are essential for long-term durability.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Dodge Dakota featured relatively basic tech and entertainment options for its time. Standard features typically included an AM/FM radio with a CD player and auxiliary input. Optional upgrades included a premium sound system and satellite radio.
Driver-assistance features were limited. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic stability control (ESC) were standard. More advanced driver-assistance features like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning were not available.
Safety features included front airbags and side-curtain airbags. Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) vary depending on the cab configuration. Generally, the Dakota received decent but not outstanding scores. Some models achieved four-star ratings in frontal crash tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) also provided ratings, which are worth consulting for a comprehensive view.
Overall, the Dakota's tech and safety features were adequate for its era but significantly less advanced than modern vehicles.

2010 Dodge Dakota Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2010 Dodge Dakota ranged from approximately $22,000 to $32,000, depending on the trim and options. Currently, used market prices generally range from $5,000 to $15,000, varying greatly based on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, engine type (V8 models tend to hold value better), and the presence of rust. Clean, well-maintained Dakotas command higher prices.

2010 Dodge Dakota Cost of Ownership

The 2010 Dodge Dakota is generally not the most economical vehicle to own. Insurance costs are moderate, but fuel costs, especially with the V8, are high. Maintenance and repair costs can be average to slightly above average, particularly as the vehicle ages. Rust repair can be a significant expense. Long-term ownership costs tend to be higher than some competitors due to fuel consumption and potential maintenance needs.

2010 Dodge Dakota Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Dodge Dakota is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Dodge Dakota Compare to Other Truck?

The 2010 Dodge Dakota competed with the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, and Ford Ranger. In terms of performance, the Dakota's V8 offered more power than most base engines of its rivals but lagged in fuel economy. Features were generally comparable, though the Tacoma often had more advanced (albeit optional) tech. Reliability was a weak point for the Dakota compared to the Tacoma, which is renowned for its longevity. The Frontier offered similar reliability at a typically lower price.
Regarding price, the Dakota was often competitively priced, especially in lower trims. However, considering overall value, the Toyota Tacoma is often a better choice due to its superior reliability and resale value. The Nissan Frontier is a similar alternative, providing a blend of affordability and capability. The Ford Ranger, while also a decent option, lacked the V8 power of the Dakota and was discontinued shortly after. Ultimately, if reliability is a top priority, the Tacoma is preferable; if budget is the primary concern, the Frontier is worth considering.

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Dodge Dakota a Good Truck?

The 2010 Dodge Dakota is ideal for buyers seeking a mid-size truck with V8 power and decent towing capability at a lower price point than full-size options. Whether it's worth buying depends on its condition and price. A well-maintained Dakota with lower mileage could be a good value. However, be prepared for potentially higher fuel and maintenance costs compared to more reliable rivals. Consider a V8-equipped model for its added power. Thoroughly inspect any potential purchase for rust and mechanical issues before committing. If reliability is paramount, alternatives like the Toyota Tacoma are more recommendable.

A truck I would like to own.

Very roomy and comfortable for a mid-size pick-up. The v8 gives plenty of power and the 4x4 was quite responsive. Excellent truck.

Good solid truck.

Haven't had the truck long enough to comment on reliability. Gas mileage isn't the greatest. It has what I need and doesn't have what I wouldn't use so I'm pretty satisfied.

Love it

Gas mileage not a plus, but if I wanted a Prius I would have bought it. Ride is smoother than my Kia Optima was. Interior roomy and comfortable but shifter on the column gets in the way of the climate control and radio. That is the only change I would make. V-6 enough power for me. Exterior very sharp.

The truck has been everything I expected to be. Nice ride, has plenty of power, and not bad on gas around town.
