The 2009 Nissan Frontier is a mid-size pickup truck, part of the second generation (D40) introduced in 2005. It comes in King Cab and Crew Cab body styles. Key trims include the XE, SE, LE, and PRO-4X. Known for its ruggedness and available V6 power, the Frontier offered a blend of practicality and off-road capability, making it a popular choice for buyers seeking a smaller alternative to full-size trucks. Pricing ranged from approximately $17,000 to $30,000 when new.
The Good

The 2009 Nissan Frontier offers a strong V6 engine for good performance and towing. It's known for its relative reliability and durable design, appealing to practical buyers. The PRO-4X trim provides emotional appeal with its off-road capabilities. It provides a good value proposition compared to larger trucks and boasts a comfortable ride for a mid-size pickup.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2009 Nissan Frontier include lower fuel economy compared to some competitors, especially with the V6 engine. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission and timing chain rattle. The interior design, while functional, can feel dated compared to newer trucks. Rust can also be an issue in certain climates.

What Problems Does the 2009 Nissan Frontier Have?

The 2009 Nissan Frontier, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. One notable issue is the potential for timing chain rattle, particularly in the 4.0L V6 engine. This can be expensive to repair. Some owners have also reported issues with the automatic transmission, including rough shifting or failure, although this is not a widespread problem. Rust, especially in areas with road salt, is a concern, particularly on the frame and undercarriage. Check for corrosion during inspection. There have been some recalls for the 2009 Frontier, including those related to potential fuel leaks. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the longevity of the timing chain and potential rust issues. Pre-purchase inspections are crucial to assess the condition of these components. The 2005-2010 model years seem to have similar issues reported.

How long will the 2009 Nissan Frontier last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Nissan Frontier can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Average mileage varies, but many examples are seen with 150,000-250,000 miles. Long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid services, and coolant flushes are crucial. Weaknesses over time include potential rust issues, especially in colder climates, and the previously mentioned timing chain concerns on the V6. The suspension components may also require attention after many years of service. Overall, the Frontier is considered a durable truck if properly cared for.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Nissan Frontier's built-in tech and entertainment features are relatively basic compared to newer vehicles. Standard features typically include an AM/FM radio and CD player. Higher trims might offer a Rockford Fosgate audio system with a subwoofer. Driver-assistance features are limited, with no advanced systems like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring available. Safety features include standard front airbags, side-impact airbags, and anti-lock brakes (ABS). Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) was available on some trims. Optional features included a sunroof, bed extender, and bed liner. Crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) vary depending on the specific test, but generally, the 2009 Frontier received good marks for frontal and side crash protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) also provided ratings, which should be consulted for a comprehensive assessment. Its technology is dated by today's standards, lacking features such as Bluetooth audio streaming and navigation in the base models. The PRO-4X added some appealing features such as Hill Descent Control.

2009 Nissan Frontier Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Nissan Frontier ranged from approximately $17,000 to $30,000 depending on the trim level and configuration. Current used market prices typically range from $6,000 to $14,000, varying based on condition, mileage, and location. The Frontier has depreciated considerably, but it holds its value reasonably well compared to some other vehicles, particularly the PRO-4X trim. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, mileage, service history, and whether it's a 2WD or 4WD model. 4WD models and those with lower mileage tend to command higher prices. PRO-4X trims hold their value best due to their off-road capabilities and desirability.

2009 Nissan Frontier Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Nissan Frontier is moderately priced to insure. Fuel costs can be higher, especially with the V6 engine. Maintenance is generally affordable, with common parts readily available. Repairs can become more expensive if issues like timing chain problems or rust arise. Long-term ownership costs are average for a mid-size truck. It's not the most economical vehicle in its class due to fuel consumption, but it's also not excessively costly to own, especially if regular maintenance is performed to prevent major repairs.

2009 Nissan Frontier Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Nissan Frontier is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Nissan Frontier Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2009 Nissan Frontier competes with the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, and Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon. In terms of performance, the Frontier's V6 is comparable to the Tacoma's. The Tacoma generally has a better reputation for long-term reliability and holds its resale value better. The Ford Ranger is less refined and has a weaker engine compared to the Frontier. The Colorado/Canyon twins offer similar performance but can suffer from reliability issues. Feature-wise, the Frontier is somewhat basic compared to the Tacoma, which offered more options. Price-wise, the Frontier is often more affordable than the Tacoma, making it a good value. A similar alternative would be the Toyota Tacoma, which offers slightly better reliability and resale value, but at a higher price point. The Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon are similar in price but may not be as reliable. If budget is a major concern, the Frontier is a good choice. If reliability and resale value are paramount, the Tacoma might be a better option, though it will command a higher price.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Nissan Frontier a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2009 Nissan Frontier is ideal for buyers seeking a reliable and capable mid-size truck at an affordable price. It's worth buying as a used vehicle, especially if well-maintained and with a clean service history. The PRO-4X trim is a good option for those needing off-road capability. However, potential buyers should have a pre-purchase inspection to check for rust and potential timing chain issues. Avoid examples with excessive rust or signs of neglect. While not as refined as newer trucks, the 2009 Frontier offers a solid combination of practicality and value for those who need a dependable pickup without breaking the bank. It's a good alternative to more expensive options if you're willing to accept its dated features.

You Can' t Best This!

I bought thic vehicle new at a great price under the cash for clunkers program. I have put almost all of the miles on it personally. I have just over 405,000 miles and it is running strong. I had the rear end replaced at 180,000 miles and that is the only major repair I have had. Best vehicle I have ever owned.

It seems to be solid for being 10 years old.

The truck drove good and handled good. Had to pot the battery charger on it this morning and the driver side window was real hard getting back up last night

Terrific beginner truck

My second Nissan Frontier. Sold the first one only because I wanted auto transmission and cruise control. Love it. Just wish it had a little more space in the back, but that's why they make crew cabs.

Very stylish and rugged 4x4

Good bang for the buck. Just what I was looking for in a small 4x4 pickup. Salesperson and dealership were very helpful in the transaction. Would recommend Todd Barnes and Butler Auto Sales to whom ever was looking for a vehicle or truck.

Nice truck for what it is.

I bought my truck used, 76,000 miles. It had alot of repairs done prior. Whole rear axle, clutch kit, battery had been done 4 times. Trailer wiring had been replaced, it has had work done. Mine is a SE, 4.0L V6, 6 Speed manual, 2 wheel drive, crew cab, 5' bed. Radios plain not very loud, 2 12v outlets, plenty of storage, heated rear window, tinted windows throughout. Only issues I have, radio could be better but for a base package. It's not to bad Cargo lamp you can NOT turn off manually. Anytime doors are open it's on, anytime you hit unlock it's on. Rattling heat shield on passenger side
