The 2009 Honda Ridgeline is a unique pickup truck known for its car-like ride and innovative features. Introduced in 2006, it features a unibody construction, setting it apart from traditional body-on-frame trucks. The 2009 model is part of the first generation, lasting until 2014. Key trims include RT, RTS, and RTL. New, it ranged roughly from $30,000-$37,000. Its standout feature is the in-bed trunk and dual-action tailgate, enhancing utility and popularity.
The Good

The 2009 Honda Ridgeline offers a smooth, comfortable ride and surprising handling thanks to its unibody construction. Practical buyers appreciate Honda's renowned reliability and the versatile in-bed trunk. Emotionally, it delivers a unique blend of truck utility and car-like drivability, appealing to those seeking a different kind of pickup experience. Its safety features also provide peace of mind.

The Bad

The 2009 Honda Ridgeline's weaknesses include its limited towing capacity compared to traditional trucks and its lower fuel economy than some newer pickups. Watch out for potential rust issues, particularly in areas with harsh winters. Also, be mindful of potential VTM-4 system (Variable Torque Management 4-Wheel Drive) maintenance needs, as proper servicing is crucial.

What Problems Does the 2009 Honda Ridgeline Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 Honda Ridgeline include issues related to the Variable Torque Management 4-Wheel Drive (VTM-4) system. Owners have reported problems with the VTM-4 fluid and pump, which can lead to system failure if not properly maintained. Rust is another concern, especially in regions with road salt. Inspect the undercarriage and body panels for corrosion. Some owners have also reported issues with the air conditioning system and occasional electrical glitches. While Honda generally has a good reputation for reliability, the Ridgeline, being a first-generation model, does have some model-specific quirks. Recalls for the 2009 Ridgeline have included issues relating to the fuel tank and potential fuel leakage in the event of a crash, as well as potential issues with the daytime running lights (DRL). Owners should check the vehicle's VIN on the NHTSA website to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the VTM-4 system and the potential for rust. Regular maintenance, including timely VTM-4 fluid changes and rustproofing measures, is crucial for extending the life of the vehicle.

How long will the 2009 Honda Ridgeline last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Honda Ridgeline can easily exceed 200,000 miles. Many owners report reaching 250,000 miles or more with diligent servicing. The key to long-term durability is consistent maintenance, particularly regarding the VTM-4 system and addressing potential rust issues early on. Weaknesses over time include potential suspension wear, particularly the rear springs, and the aforementioned VTM-4 pump issues. Neglecting these areas will shorten the vehicle's lifespan. Regular fluid changes (engine oil, transmission fluid, VTM-4 fluid) are paramount for a long and healthy life.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Honda Ridgeline's built-in tech, while not cutting-edge by today's standards, offered a decent array of features for its time. Entertainment features included a standard 6-speaker audio system on the base RT trim, with upgraded systems including a subwoofer available on the RTS and RTL trims. Some RTL models offered XM satellite radio as an option. Navigation was also an available option on the RTL trim. Driver-assistance features were limited, primarily consisting of standard cruise control. Safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), vehicle stability assist (VSA) with traction control, and front, side, and side curtain airbags.
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) were generally positive. The 2009 Ridgeline earned five-star ratings in frontal and side-impact crash tests. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also gave the Ridgeline a "Good" rating in its frontal offset and side-impact crash tests. The Ridgeline did not have modern driver-assistance systems like blind-spot monitoring or lane departure warning, which are common in newer vehicles. Optional features were primarily trim-level dependent, with the RTL offering leather upholstery, heated seats, and the aforementioned navigation system as upgrades. The RTL trim also included a multi-function center console and automatic headlights.

2009 Honda Ridgeline Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Honda Ridgeline ranged from approximately $30,000 to $37,000 depending on the trim level and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Ridgeline has depreciated considerably due to its age. Factors affecting resale value include the overall condition of the vehicle, mileage, any existing rust issues, and the presence of desirable options like leather seats or navigation. Models with well-documented maintenance records tend to command higher prices. The Ridgeline's unique design also impacts resale, as some buyers specifically seek it out for its features, while others prefer more traditional trucks.

2009 Honda Ridgeline Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2009 Honda Ridgeline are generally moderate. Fuel costs can be higher than some modern pickups due to its fuel economy. Maintenance costs are typically reasonable, in line with other Hondas, but VTM-4 system maintenance can add to the expense. Repairs can be more costly if rust is present or if the VTM-4 system requires significant work. Long-term ownership costs are moderate, but vigilance with maintenance and rust prevention is essential. It's not the most economical vehicle, but reasonable if well maintained.

2009 Honda Ridgeline Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Honda Ridgeline is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Honda Ridgeline Compare to Other Truck?

The 2009 Honda Ridgeline competed with mid-size trucks like the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, and Chevrolet Colorado. In terms of performance, the Ridgeline offered a smoother ride than its body-on-frame rivals but had a lower towing capacity. Feature-wise, its in-bed trunk and dual-action tailgate were unique advantages. Reliability is generally strong, similar to the Tacoma, but potential VTM-4 issues need consideration. Price-wise, used Ridgelines are often comparable to similar-year Tacomas, though Tacomas tend to hold their value slightly better.
Alternatives depend on priorities. If towing is paramount, the Tacoma or Colorado are better choices. If a comfortable ride and unique features are desired, the Ridgeline is a good option. For similar comfort and features, a newer Honda Ridgeline (2017+) is a significant upgrade. However, for pure work-truck capability, the older body-on-frame rivals edge out the 2009 Ridgeline. The Nissan Frontier, while less refined, can offer a more affordable entry point into the mid-size truck market.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Honda Ridgeline a Good Truck?

The 2009 Honda Ridgeline is ideal for buyers seeking a comfortable, versatile truck with unique features and don't need maximum towing capacity. It's worth buying used if found in good condition with documented maintenance and minimal rust. The RTL trim offers the most features, making it desirable if within budget. Thoroughly inspect the VTM-4 system before purchasing. Avoid models with excessive rust or neglected maintenance. If heavy towing is a requirement, consider alternatives. However, for a daily driver with occasional truck needs, the 2009 Ridgeline offers a compelling and unique package. Check for recalls and service history.

Just Purchased

This is my 2nd Ridgeline purchase. My 1st Ridgeline met and exceeded all my expectations. My 1st Ridgeline was passed down to my son, knowing he has a great mode of transportation. I hope that I too have purchased myself another great Ridgeline.

This is the second Ridgeline I've owned

This is my second Ridgeline. I've been very impressed with the comfort and function of the vehicle. Although I wish it had Bluetooth for music compatibility, the Bluetooth for hands free phone, navigation, back up camera, heated leather seats and side view mirrors are all great upgrades. Compared to other 4 door trucks in its price range (Toyota and Nissan) you get much more for your money. Compared to other trucks like the Nissan Titan and Chevy Avalanche it is much more affordable. Not the best on gas mileage though.

This is one of the nicest used car I?ve owned

Great truck! I always wanted a Honda Ridgeline and it is every thing I expected and more. It has features you don?t see on other trucks , like two way tail gate and a trunk inside the bed. Great ideas from Honda.

Most versatile truck i have owned.

So far it is very comfortable and has plenty of power for a v6, i like the quiet ride and room of the crew cab. The AWD feature is very nice in these MN winters.

Honda Ridgeline

This is my first truck and I'm very happy with the smooth, comfortable drive and bed space. The style is original and the accessories are also very nice.

Good truck

Nice light truck. Good for high miles and light off road use. Comfortable ride. Wish I'd had it 20 yrs ago.

Best vehicle I ever owned

This truck is great for carrying just about anything. Especially with the in trunk design in the bed which can be used as a large cooler. Has towing capabilities too.
