Rating: 4.73
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2017 Volkswagen Passat is a mid-size sedan, part of a long line of Passat models known for their spaciousness and comfortable ride. Available as a four-door sedan, the 2017 Passat came in trims like S, R-Line, SE, SEL, and V6 SEL Premium. Its popularity stems from its roomy interior, large trunk, and European driving feel. Expect a pricing range from around $22,000 new to the current used market values.
The Good

The 2017 Passat offers a comfortable and spacious cabin, appealing to practical buyers. Its composed handling and available V6 engine provide a touch of driving enjoyment. Fuel efficiency is respectable, and the design is understated yet elegant. It delivers good value for money, especially in the used market, offering a premium feel without the premium price tag.

The Bad

The 2017 Passat's weaknesses include a somewhat bland interior design and less-than-thrilling base engine performance. Reliability can be a concern, particularly with electrical components and the DSG transmission on certain models. The infotainment system can feel dated compared to newer rivals. Check for oil leaks and transmission issues during inspection.

What Problems Does the 2017 Volkswagen Passat Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2017 Volkswagen Passat include issues with the electrical system, such as malfunctioning sensors and infotainment glitches. Some owners have reported problems with the air conditioning system, including compressor failures and leaks. Transmission issues, particularly with the DSG (dual-clutch) transmission on some models, can occur, leading to rough shifting or complete failure. Oil leaks, especially around the valve cover gasket, are also relatively common.

Recalls for the 2017 Passat have addressed issues like fuel leaks due to improperly manufactured fuel rails, which could increase the risk of a fire. Other recalls have focused on potential issues with the rearview camera and airbags. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the longevity of the turbocharger in the 1.8T engine and the potential for carbon buildup. It's essential to check the vehicle's maintenance history and address any outstanding recalls before purchasing a used 2017 Passat. Thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is advisable.

How long will the 2017 Volkswagen Passat last?

With proper maintenance, a 2017 Volkswagen Passat can reasonably achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Key to longevity is regular oil changes, timely transmission servicing, and addressing minor issues promptly. Long-term durability can be affected by the aforementioned electrical gremlins and potential for oil leaks. The turbocharger on the 1.8T engine may require replacement at some point, and the timing chain should be inspected for wear. Proper care and adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule will significantly impact the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2017 Volkswagen Passat features a standard touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity and a rearview camera. Higher trims offer features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, navigation, and a premium Fender audio system.

Driver-assistance features available include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. These features were often optional, so availability varies depending on the trim level.

Safety features include standard antilock brakes, stability control, and a full suite of airbags. The 2017 Passat performed well in crash tests. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave it a 5-star overall safety rating. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded it a "Top Safety Pick" rating, indicating good performance in crash tests and the availability of effective crash-avoidance technology. The specific rating depends on the headlights equipped, with higher trims offering better headlight performance. Optional features, such as parking sensors and park assist, enhance convenience and safety.

2017 Volkswagen Passat Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2017 Volkswagen Passat had a starting MSRP of around $22,440. Higher trims like the V6 SEL Premium could reach upwards of $35,000. As of today, used market prices for the 2017 Passat typically range from $12,000 to $18,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. Depreciation has been moderate, influenced by factors like mileage, accident history, and overall condition. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition with complete service records command higher resale values. The availability of advanced features and driver-assistance technologies also impacts resale value.

2017 Volkswagen Passat Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2017 Volkswagen Passat are generally moderate, comparable to other mid-size sedans. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the 1.8T engine. Maintenance costs can be average to slightly above average, with potential for higher repair bills if issues arise with the turbocharger or transmission. 2017 Volkswagen Passat Insurance

Insurance for a 2017 Volkswagen Passat is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2017 Volkswagen Passat Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2017 Volkswagen Passat competes with rivals like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, and Mazda 6. In terms of performance, the Camry and Accord offer comparable or slightly better fuel economy and acceleration. The Mazda 6 provides a more engaging driving experience. Feature-wise, the Passat offers a spacious interior but might lack some of the latest tech found in newer models of its competitors.

Reliability is where the Passat sometimes lags behind the Camry and Accord, which are known for their strong reliability records. The Ford Fusion offers a similar blend of comfort and features, while the Hyundai Sonata often provides better value for money. Price-wise, the Passat is generally competitive in the used market.

Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Camry for its renowned reliability and the Honda Accord for its well-rounded performance and features. The Mazda 6 is a good option for those prioritizing driving dynamics. The Hyundai Sonata or Kia Optima can offer more features for the price. If reliability is a top concern, the Camry or Accord are arguably better choices.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Volkswagen Passat a Good Sedan?

The 2017 Volkswagen Passat is ideal for buyers seeking a spacious and comfortable mid-size sedan with a European driving feel. It's a worthwhile purchase in the used market, provided it has a clean maintenance history and has been thoroughly inspected. Lower mileage examples are preferable.

The SE or SEL trims offer a good balance of features and value. It's not recommended for those prioritizing ultimate reliability above all else, as competitors have a better track record. If you need a roomy sedan and can find one in good condition, the 2017 Passat offers a compelling blend of comfort and value.

Most Reliable Car I Have Owned

After over 78000 miles, nothing but regular maintenance. Trip from Atlanta to Ohio, 40 mpg. In town mileage 31-32 mpg. Had a 2014 and it was a great car as well. Paid $16,999 on sale in 2017 on Passat S. Best car in 55 years of driving.

Best purchase ever

Was originally looking for a 2015 Passat diesel. Found a 2017 Passat Sel with 14000 certified miles. Love the elegant look of the big sedan. Front and rear seating is almost limousine like. The ride is excellent. The handling is pretty good too. Pick up from the 1.8 litter 4 is more than adequate. My gas mileage around town is anywhere from 25 on the low end to about 29 when I really watch it. On the expressway it's amazing. I have a brother in Wisconsin and the drive is about 95 miles. I have never averaged less than 40 and as high as 43.4 mpg. I guess I don't need a diesel. Own it 3 years now and I'd recommend one to anyone looking for a great ride with looks and great gas milage to boot. If I have one complaint it would be the touch radio and infotainment center. It is very touchy and doesn't work half the time. It just gets stuck on the last station you were on. It should be recalled as I have read that others also have this issue. Other than that I love my Passat.

Needs new engine by 80,000 miles!

Purchased vehicle new in 2017. From the beginning there were issues. Road noise was always a problem. Wheel sensors consistently went out (which is not a fun thing when travelling on the interstate at high speed). Carpet on the passenger side pulled up within two years. Went through tires even though I ensured they were rotated. Worst of all, vehicle needs a NEW ENGINE at 81,000 miles!!! All maintenance was kept up on. I have a cousin who had this exact same thing happen to her with the same generation of Passat. I HIGHLY DO NOT recommend this car. I will be selling my Jetta as well now. Never will I buy a Volkswagen again.

Very Happy

Had a 2015 Passat and now this 2017 SE w/Tech and Light Pkg. Had some frontend noise issues, the same on both the 15 and 17. It was expensive to fix at around 80K miles. My only tech problem is that my passenger side mirror stopped going down to display the curb when I back up. Average mileage is around 26 -27 with 75% city, stop and go traffic. I am pleased with that. My biggest complaint is my wife's complaint, the front seats aren't made for long trips. Her part is the Lumbar support, mine would be the lack of seat cushion. Other than those things, I love my Passat. The little tiny 1.8L is never short of power for me. I live in Texas and I don't feel good about pushing the little motor hour after hour much past 70 -75 mph, so I do get passed a lot, but I make up for it at the gas pumps.

Awesome family hauler

This vehicle has exceeded my expectations. Smooth ride with lots of space. Two concerns with the brake sensor going bad too early for me and the park pilot message constantly coming on.
