The Good
The 2017 Passat offers a comfortable and spacious cabin, appealing to practical buyers. Its composed handling and available V6 engine provide a touch of driving enjoyment. Fuel efficiency is respectable, and the design is understated yet elegant. It delivers good value for money, especially in the used market, offering a premium feel without the premium price tag.
The Bad
The 2017 Passat's weaknesses include a somewhat bland interior design and less-than-thrilling base engine performance. Reliability can be a concern, particularly with electrical components and the DSG transmission on certain models. The infotainment system can feel dated compared to newer rivals. Check for oil leaks and transmission issues during inspection.

How Does the 2017 Volkswagen Passat Compare to Other Sedan?
Reliability is where the Passat sometimes lags behind the Camry and Accord, which are known for their strong reliability records. The Ford Fusion offers a similar blend of comfort and features, while the Hyundai Sonata often provides better value for money. Price-wise, the Passat is generally competitive in the used market.
Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Camry for its renowned reliability and the Honda Accord for its well-rounded performance and features. The Mazda 6 is a good option for those prioritizing driving dynamics. The Hyundai Sonata or Kia Optima can offer more features for the price. If reliability is a top concern, the Camry or Accord are arguably better choices.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Volkswagen Passat a Good Sedan?
The SE or SEL trims offer a good balance of features and value. It's not recommended for those prioritizing ultimate reliability above all else, as competitors have a better track record. If you need a roomy sedan and can find one in good condition, the 2017 Passat offers a compelling blend of comfort and value.

Most Reliable Car I Have OwnedAfter over 78000 miles, nothing but regular maintenance. Trip from Atlanta to Ohio, 40 mpg. In town mileage 31-32 mpg. Had a 2014 and it was a great car as well. Paid $16,999 on sale in 2017 on Passat S. Best car in 55 years of driving.

Great reliability! The best car I have ever owned! Not kidding! Very excellent reliability and low cost maintenance. Great mileage. I plan on running it for at least 200,000 miles.

Best purchase everWas originally looking for a 2015 Passat diesel. Found a 2017 Passat Sel with 14000 certified miles. Love the elegant look of the big sedan. Front and rear seating is almost limousine like. The ride is excellent. The handling is pretty good too. Pick up from the 1.8 litter 4 is more than adequate. My gas mileage around town is anywhere from 25 on the low end to about 29 when I really watch it. On the expressway it's amazing. I have a brother in Wisconsin and the drive is about 95 miles. I have never averaged less than 40 and as high as 43.4 mpg. I guess I don't need a diesel. Own it 3 years now and I'd recommend one to anyone looking for a great ride with looks and great gas milage to boot. If I have one complaint it would be the touch radio and infotainment center. It is very touchy and doesn't work half the time. It just gets stuck on the last station you were on. It should be recalled as I have read that others also have this issue. Other than that I love my Passat.

Needs new engine by 80,000 miles!Purchased vehicle new in 2017. From the beginning there were issues. Road noise was always a problem. Wheel sensors consistently went out (which is not a fun thing when travelling on the interstate at high speed). Carpet on the passenger side pulled up within two years. Went through tires even though I ensured they were rotated. Worst of all, vehicle needs a NEW ENGINE at 81,000 miles!!! All maintenance was kept up on. I have a cousin who had this exact same thing happen to her with the same generation of Passat. I HIGHLY DO NOT recommend this car. I will be selling my Jetta as well now. Never will I buy a Volkswagen again.

Very HappyHad a 2015 Passat and now this 2017 SE w/Tech and Light Pkg. Had some frontend noise issues, the same on both the 15 and 17. It was expensive to fix at around 80K miles. My only tech problem is that my passenger side mirror stopped going down to display the curb when I back up. Average mileage is around 26 -27 with 75% city, stop and go traffic. I am pleased with that. My biggest complaint is my wife's complaint, the front seats aren't made for long trips. Her part is the Lumbar support, mine would be the lack of seat cushion. Other than those things, I love my Passat. The little tiny 1.8L is never short of power for me. I live in Texas and I don't feel good about pushing the little motor hour after hour much past 70 -75 mph, so I do get passed a lot, but I make up for it at the gas pumps.

Awesome family haulerThis vehicle has exceeded my expectations. Smooth ride with lots of space. Two concerns with the brake sensor going bad too early for me and the park pilot message constantly coming on.

Doing great so farLoving it so far. Amazing power and super comfortable. Elegant and sporty all at once. Great options. The only thing missing is a sunroof. Heated seats are perfect in the awful non-beach weather!
