Rating: 4.19
Based on 72 Owner Reviews
Simon A | March 31, 2025
The 2012 Subaru Forester is a compact SUV known for its standard all-wheel drive and practicality. Part of the third generation (2009-2013), it offers a blend of utility and capability. Key trims include the base, Premium, X Limited, and XT. Expect a used price range from roughly $7,000 to $15,000, depending on condition and mileage. Its symmetrical all-wheel drive and reputation for reliability make it a popular choice for those facing varied weather conditions or light off-road adventures.
The Good

The 2012 Forester provides secure handling in all weather thanks to its AWD, appealing to practical buyers concerned with safety. Its reliability and reputation for longevity offer peace of mind. For emotional buyers, the Forester presents a sense of adventure and capability, while still offering a comfortable ride and decent fuel efficiency for everyday use. It represents excellent value for its capabilities.

The Bad

The 2012 Forester's weaknesses include somewhat bland interior styling and a less engaging driving experience compared to some rivals. The base engine can feel underpowered, especially when fully loaded. Oil consumption can be an issue in some models, so regular monitoring is crucial. The infotainment system is also dated by modern standards. Some report issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT) in later model years, though this is less prevalent in 2012.

What Problems Does the 2012 Subaru Forester Have?

The 2012 Subaru Forester, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. Oil consumption is a significant concern; some owners experience excessive oil burning between changes, especially with the naturally aspirated engine. Regularly checking the oil level is crucial.

Another area of concern can be head gasket issues, though this is less prevalent in the 2012 model year compared to earlier Foresters. However, it's still worth having the cooling system inspected during a pre-purchase inspection.

Some owners report issues with the air conditioning system, requiring repairs or replacement of components. Electrical issues, such as problems with the power windows or door locks, are occasionally reported but are not widespread.

Recalls for the 2012 Forester have addressed issues like potential fuel line cracking and problems with the brake light switch. Always check the NHTSA website for the most up-to-date recall information.

Long-term reliability largely depends on maintenance. Foresters that receive regular oil changes and timely repairs tend to last much longer. Neglecting maintenance can exacerbate existing problems and lead to more costly repairs down the road. Prioritizing regular inspections and addressing any unusual noises or behaviors promptly will contribute to the vehicle's longevity.

How long will the 2012 Subaru Forester last?

A well-maintained 2012 Subaru Forester can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. With average annual mileage of 12,000-15,000, expect 13-16 years of service. Durability is strong, especially with the AWD system. However, long-term weaknesses include potential oil consumption and eventual wear of suspension components, leading to a need for replacement. Rust can also become an issue in colder climates with salted roads, especially if not properly maintained. Regular fluid changes (oil, coolant, transmission, differentials) are key to maximizing longevity.
Positive Owner Reviews
Noah
This vehicle is burning oil; avoid it according to the internet price being cheap based on its value. In addition to this, avoid these model years between 2009-2013.
Sharon B
One of the most comfortable cars I have owned. The things I love best. the reliability of the vehicle, only regular maintenance with higher miles, The huge moon roof, and the simple design of the interior of car. This car is loaded yet has very minimal control buttons which is perfect for me rather than trying to figure out how to operate everything. Best car I have ever owned especially buying used with high miles.
Kelvin
Great car for snow and icy conditions. The car is solid. Engine and transmission are solid. Spacious and comfort. Mileage is decent I can get 27 mpg in highway.
Negative Owner Reviews
Renae Allan
So far the car has met all of my expectations but I have not had it long enough to do a thorough review. I do feel safe and it is large enough to haul all my stuff around when I move.

When shopping for my new car I was looking at several other brands as well as Subaru. The two front runners were hybrid suvs, but neither company could get one to me in under 3 months. I regret not waiting. The dealer wowed me with safety talk and blah blah and what ever they tell a person. Then we took it on a short drive. It was nice, better even than I expected. The problem is that the test drive was on back roads. They would not let it out on the interstate, and I thought nothing of it at the time. So here are my complaints. The car is under powered. Not a slug but it sure takes a while to get up to speed. And as underpowered as the car is, it sure could get better fuel milage than it does. Mid 20's driving the speed limit with cruise control. It only has a four speed transmission that stutters and pauses a lot as if it were confused. Also my car is three months old and already I have had trouble starting it in the morning plus lots of minor body parts falling off or coming loose and rattling. I have a 30 year old truck that does not rattle as bad as this car.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Subaru Forester's tech and entertainment features are relatively basic by today's standards. Standard features include a CD player, AM/FM radio, and auxiliary input jack. Higher trims offer an upgraded audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, and available navigation system.

Driver-assistance features are limited, with no advanced systems like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking available. Safety features include standard antilock brakes (ABS), stability control, traction control, and a suite of airbags (front, side, and curtain).

Optional features vary by trim level. The Premium trim adds features like a panoramic sunroof and upgraded audio. The Limited trim includes leather upholstery, heated front seats, and automatic climate control. The XT trim includes the turbocharged engine and sport-tuned suspension.

Crash-test ratings for the 2012 Subaru Forester are generally good. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded it a "Top Safety Pick" designation. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave it an overall rating of four out of five stars. These ratings reflect the Forester's solid performance in frontal, side, and rollover crash tests, providing peace of mind for safety-conscious buyers. It's a safe vehicle for its time but lacks the sophisticated safety tech found in newer cars.

2012 Subaru Forester Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Subaru Forester ranged from approximately $21,000 to $30,000 depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $7,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been moderate, reflecting Subaru's generally good resale value. Factors affecting resale include mileage, condition, service history, and trim level. XT models with the turbo engine tend to hold their value slightly better. Well-maintained examples with lower mileage command higher prices. The AWD system adds to its desirability, especially in regions with inclement weather.

2012 Subaru Forester Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2012 Subaru Forester are typically moderate. Fuel costs are reasonable, though the XT model's turbo engine demands premium fuel, increasing expenses. Maintenance costs are average, with routine services being relatively affordable. However, potential issues like oil consumption and head gasket problems can lead to more costly repairs. Overall, the Forester is reasonably economical to own, but budgeting for potential repairs is advisable, especially with higher-mileage examples. Regular maintenance is key to minimizing long-term costs.

2012 Subaru Forester Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Subaru Forester is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Subaru Forester Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2012 Subaru Forester competes with the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Mazda CX-5. The CR-V offers a more refined interior and slightly better fuel economy, while the RAV4 boasts strong reliability. The Mazda CX-5 provides a more engaging driving experience and stylish design. The Forester stands out with its standard AWD, making it superior in adverse weather. In terms of reliability, the Forester is generally comparable to the CR-V and RAV4, but may be more prone to oil consumption issues.

Compared to the CR-V and RAV4, the Forester's interior is less modern. The Mazda CX-5 offers a sportier feel, but lacks standard AWD. Prices are generally competitive within the segment.

Alternatives to the 2012 Forester include the 2012 Honda CR-V (for a more comfortable ride and fuel efficiency), the 2012 Toyota RAV4 (for exceptional reliability), or the 2013 Mazda CX-5 (for a sportier driving experience and updated styling). If AWD isn't essential, the Mazda CX-5 is a compelling alternative. However, for those prioritizing AWD capability and practicality, the Forester remains a strong contender. A 2012 or 2013 Subaru Outback could also be considered, offering similar attributes with more cargo space.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Subaru Forester a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2012 Subaru Forester is ideal for those needing a reliable and capable compact SUV with standard all-wheel drive. It's a solid choice for drivers in snowy or wet climates, or those who occasionally venture off-road. It's worth buying used if you find a well-maintained example with a thorough service history and pre-purchase inspection. The Premium or Limited trims offer a good balance of features and value. Consider the XT model if you want more power, but be prepared for higher fuel costs. Checking for oil consumption issues is crucial before purchasing. Avoid examples with neglected maintenance, as they may lead to costly repairs.

This vehicle is burning oil; avoid it according to the internet price being cheap based on its value. In addition to this, avoid these model years between 2009-2013.

I’m the 3rd owner of a 2012 Subaru Forester purchased at approx 175,000 miles and it still runs pretty good! It does burn oil up pretty quickly and mine has issues with reading the levels and won’t give me a warning light so i check the dip stick often. Mine did have exhaust issues and had to replace a rested out piping from the cat back, but mufflers were still good. Also the Oxygen sensor was a problem for awhile, which you can only use on brand for it to work properly. Gas mileage is decent for the size of the vehicle and its age. Only wish the front seats went back more bc my taller girlfriend who is 5’11 with long legs struggles to fit and be comfortable in the passenger seat.

Vehicle not reliable in cold weather.

Bought new in November 2011. Has used oil from the beginning. Always been serviced by the dealer we bought the vehicle from. 85,500+- miles. Now bumps in rear when weather is cold when changes first gear. Very hard thump. Then runs ok. We feel its just a matter of time for a major problem.

Engine eats oil -- stay away!

The 2012 was my 3rd Subie. Biggest issue by far: a bad engine that eats oil (3+ quarts btwn regular changes). Even worse: Subaru not only knows about it, but was sued in a class-action, and yet they still fail to do the right thing & replace the engine in all 2009-13's. Over time, the catalytic converters are destroyed by the burning oil. Also bad: revs too fast on hills & requires tapping of the brake for rev to slow, felt (not carpet) on floors, thin fabric on ceiling, subpar seat cushioning that gets flatter every year, subpar front floor that wears out easily. Only good thing was that it still acted like a Subie in a crash, i.e. protected passengers well. Subaru's failure to do the right thing with the engine issue has lost this formerly Subie-loyal customer.

Great Value, Great Car!

Safe, reliable and well renowned

This car was roomy, affordable and had great reviews from my family and friends. 4 cylinder makes it great on gas and I'm hoping like I've heard that it will last for years to come.

2012 subaru Forester

This is my third Subaru. It is a reliable car. It is fun to drive. I may not work for a large family. I never had the feeling that I can't rely of this car. It is a lot of fun to drive in the snow. It is very comfortable to drive long distance. I would recommend this car an would have my kids drive it.

So far so good

So far the car has met all of my expectations but I have not had it long enough to do a thorough review. I do feel safe and it is large enough to haul all my stuff around when I move.
