Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a mid-size SUV known for its blend of on-road comfort and off-road capability. Part of the WK generation (2005-2010), it offers a traditional SUV body style. Key trims included the Laredo, Limited, and Overland. Its popularity stems from its Jeep heritage, powerful engine options, and a relatively luxurious interior for its time. Pricing ranged from around $30,000 new to significantly less on the used market.
The Good

The 2009 Grand Cherokee offers strong performance, especially with the V8 engine options, appealing to those seeking power and capability. Its comfortable ride and spacious interior are practical advantages. The iconic Jeep design and off-road prowess evoke a sense of adventure, satisfying emotional buyers. Value is strong on the used market, offering a lot of features for the price.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2009 Grand Cherokee include potential electrical issues, especially with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). Fuel economy is not a strong point, particularly with the V8 engines. Suspension components and drivetrain parts may require attention due to wear and tear, especially in models used for off-roading. Rust can also be a concern in certain climates.

What Problems Does the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee include issues with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), which can cause various electrical malfunctions, such as stalling, fuel pump failure, and issues with power windows and locks. Some owners have reported problems with the suspension, including premature wear of ball joints and control arm bushings. The automatic transmission can also exhibit issues such as rough shifting or failure, particularly in higher-mileage vehicles. Rust can be a concern in areas with harsh winters, especially on the undercarriage and body panels. Recalls for the 2009 Grand Cherokee have addressed issues such as potential fuel leakage and problems with the electronic stability control system. Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the complexity of the electrical systems and the potential for increased maintenance costs as the vehicle ages. Before purchasing a used 2009 Grand Cherokee, it is advisable to have it inspected by a qualified mechanic to check for these common issues and ensure that any outstanding recalls have been addressed. Specific model year variations in reported problems are relatively minor, with the TIPM issue being a consistent concern across the 2005-2010 WK generation.

How long will the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee can reasonably provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 12-15 years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on maintenance habits. Regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely repairs are crucial. Long-term durability is generally good, particularly regarding the engine and transmission, if properly maintained. Weaknesses over time include potential rust, electrical system failures (especially the TIPM), and wear and tear on suspension components. Keeping up with preventative maintenance will significantly impact the vehicle's lifespan.

I love my 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It only had one owner before I purchased it in 2016 and it was in very good condition (very clean and like new, especially on the inside). It did appear to have been in a minor accident. Some exterior things needed to be replaced. But hardly noticeable and good looking vehicle. Have had to take it in for a few relatively minor mechanical repairs.

This is the 4th used JGC Ltd I've owned. Styling & utility consistently has eroded over the years. Limited trim used to be their high end offering but now its middle of the road trim & features. Also, the the truly usable cargo capacity has gone down with each new redesign. Stowage under the back seat and spare wheel-well has disappeared. '09 spare is suspended under the rear cargo deck, open to the elements subject to corrosive road effects that without periodic lube and maintenance may find the hoist inoperable when critical to drop the spare. Adjustable head rests on back seats gone. Rear seat leg room nearly non-existent. Woe be the passenger's knees behind the driver when the ignition is turned off and seat withdraws for ease of driver exit. '09, as with my previous '02, still has the lift glass rear window (albeit without any handle grab), a feature that keeps the "U" in SUV hauling long items like 2x4s. After '10 models, that feature was lost to styling of the Italians. Guess I much prefer German and American design and engineering, but, hey - find a SUV anymore with a lift glass! Pep & pick-up nothing like my '02 with same engine and better mileage. That gave me 21 mpg combined; this barely 15. Would still be driving my '02 if not been totaled by a head-on when a driver crossed the center line. I'll say this for the '02 rolled and inverted and half the rear end torn off - I survived with only minor wrist fracture. Only hoping the '09 can stand up if ever so needed. As durable and beneficial the JGC is I would never buy new but with searching can find great low mileage deals used, saving $$$$.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee offered a decent level of technology for its time. Standard features included a basic AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered a premium audio system with satellite radio and a navigation system. Entertainment options included a rear-seat DVD entertainment system. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, but included available rear parking sensors. Safety features included standard antilock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), traction control, and front and side airbags. Optional safety features included side curtain airbags. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) varied depending on the specific test, but the Grand Cherokee generally received good scores for frontal and side impact protection. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also provided crash test ratings. It's important to check specific ratings for the 2009 model year on the IIHS website. Tech and entertainment options were adequate for the time, with the upgraded audio and navigation systems providing a more enjoyable experience. Safety features were fairly comprehensive, offering a reasonable level of protection in the event of a collision. While driver-assistance features were limited, the available rear parking sensors were a useful addition.

2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee ranged from approximately $27,000 for the base Laredo to over $40,000 for a fully equipped Overland. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Grand Cherokee has experienced significant depreciation due to its age and the availability of newer models. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and the presence of desirable options like the HEMI engine and four-wheel drive. Well-maintained examples with lower mileage command higher prices, while those with deferred maintenance or high mileage sell for less.

2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee Cost of Ownership

Long-term ownership of a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee can be moderately costly. Insurance costs are average for a mid-size SUV. Fuel costs, particularly with the V8 engines, are high. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant, especially as the vehicle ages. The potential for electrical issues and wear and tear on suspension and drivetrain components contribute to higher repair bills. Overall, it's not the most economical vehicle to own, requiring a budget for potential repairs and higher fuel consumption. A pre-purchase inspection is recommended.

2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee competes with vehicles like the Toyota 4Runner, Ford Explorer, Chevrolet TrailBlazer, and Nissan Pathfinder. In terms of performance, the Grand Cherokee, especially with the HEMI V8, offers comparable or superior power to some rivals. However, its fuel economy lags behind. Feature-wise, it holds its own, offering a comparable level of equipment. Reliability is where the Grand Cherokee falls short compared to the Toyota 4Runner, which has a strong reputation for longevity. The Ford Explorer offers a more comfortable on-road ride but less off-road capability. The Chevy Trailblazer is generally less refined. Pricewise, the Grand Cherokee is often more affordable on the used market than the 4Runner. A similar alternative would be the Nissan Pathfinder, offering a balance of features and price, but potentially with similar reliability concerns. If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota 4Runner is a better choice, despite being more expensive. If on-road comfort is paramount, the Ford Explorer might be preferable. For a balance of capability and value, the Grand Cherokee remains a decent option, provided potential buyers are aware of its potential reliability issues.

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee is ideal for buyers seeking a capable SUV with a blend of on-road comfort and off-road ability, especially at a reasonable price on the used market. It's worth buying if you're aware of its potential reliability issues and are prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs. Opting for a lower mileage example with a solid service history is crucial. Specific trims like the Limited or Overland offer a more luxurious experience, but the Laredo provides a good value. Avoid models with known issues or deferred maintenance. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended. If reliability is your top concern, consider alternatives like the Toyota 4Runner. Otherwise, the 2009 Grand Cherokee can be a good choice for the right buyer.

Is still love jeeps

I bought my Jeep Grand Cherokee limited in 2018 I love jeeps this is my 3rd one it is now 2022 the only problems I have really encountered with the car are mostly run of the mill the water pump went out which is normal and I had a starter go out which is also a normal for a vehicle with a 100,000 plus miles The only problem I had that kind of sucked was the transmission speed sensor when out when me and my girlfriend were on vacation in Michigan The car will go into safe mode which only allows you to go about 27 miles an hour, I would caution anybody that would be buying one for Winter driving that these cars drive so nice in the Winter that you can get overconfident and drive too fast because they handle excellent in the snow My basic philosophy is drive it like it's only 2 wheel drive One other issue I have recently had is that I have a check engine light on I read the code on it and it says that a temperature in variance was detected I am thinking about getting a different car as the different car as this car has now 201,000 miles on it I may get another Jeep I'm not sure I'm looking the other sensor that has triggered is electronic throttle control the car is not behaving funny it's not overheating so I'm not really going to worry about it

Rugged and luxurious

Great all around vehicle that offers versatile performance in any part of the country. I have owned a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Special Edition and last year I decided to pick up a low mileage 2009 Grand Cherokee Limited Hemi. After a year of ownership of the 2009, it brought back many memories that I had back in 2003. I would recommend a Jeep Grand Cherokee to anyone who is looking for a versatile vehicle to get them around no matter the weather condition. The 2009 Grand Cherokee was an upgrade both on the interior and exterior. The interior of the limited is plush offering great interior comforts including; auto high beams, heated seats, nav, back-up camera, MP3, and great interior wood accents throughout the cabin.
