Rating: 4.83
Based on 100 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The Subaru Forester, introduced in 1997, is a compact SUV known for its standard all-wheel drive and practicality. The 2021 model continues this tradition. It's a 5-door SUV offered in trims like Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring. New pricing ranged from approximately $25,000 to $35,000. Its popularity stems from its reliability, spacious interior, excellent visibility, and off-road capability making it a favorite for outdoor enthusiasts and families alike.
The Good

The 2021 Subaru Forester offers a blend of practicality and emotional appeal. Its symmetrical all-wheel drive inspires confidence in all weather conditions. Reliable Subaru engineering offers peace of mind. The comfortable and spacious interior is ideal for families. While not a performance vehicle, it delivers adequate power and decent fuel efficiency, making it a sensible and capable choice.

The Bad

The 2021 Forester's weaknesses include its somewhat underpowered engine, which can feel strained during acceleration and when fully loaded. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) can sometimes exhibit droning noises. The infotainment system can also feel dated compared to competitors. Some owners have reported issues with the battery draining. Finally, the exterior styling is conservative and may not appeal to everyone.

What Problems Does the 2021 Subaru Forester Have?

The 2021 Subaru Forester, while generally reliable, has exhibited some reported issues. A common complaint involves the infotainment system, with users reporting sluggish performance, glitches, and difficulty connecting to smartphones. Another recurring issue is premature battery drain, especially in colder climates, potentially requiring replacement sooner than expected. Some owners have noted excessive oil consumption, though this is less prevalent in the 2021 model compared to earlier years. There have been some recalls related to the rearview camera malfunctioning and potential issues with the fuel pump that could lead to engine stalling. Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the CVT transmission, as some owners experience issues with shuddering or unusual noises as the vehicle ages and accumulates mileage. Regularly scheduled maintenance, including fluid changes, is crucial for mitigating these potential issues and ensuring the Forester's longevity. Checking the NHTSA website for any specific recalls related to your vehicle's VIN is also recommended.

How long will the 2021 Subaru Forester last?

With proper maintenance, a 2021 Subaru Forester can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, potentially lasting 10-15 years. Subarus, in general, are known for their longevity. Regular oil changes (every 6,000 miles), timely fluid replacements (CVT, brake, coolant), and addressing minor issues promptly are key to maximizing lifespan. Long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Potential weaknesses over time include rust in regions with heavy salt use, and wear and tear on suspension components. The CVT transmission's longevity is also dependent on proper servicing.

One of the best cars I have ever owned. It drives like a dream, has more get-up-and-go then I ever thought a 4 cyl. could have. I make a 3000 miles trip from Texas to Utah in may and averaged 34 miles per gallon. I would recommend them to everyone.

[Most satisfied] All imported, all full-time four-wheel drive, horizontally opposed engine. [Most dissatisfied] The car system is too old. Without Carplay, Carlife is also more laggy. [Space] The wheelbase is 2670, and I sit at 1.78 in the front, so there is enough space in the back and plenty of space in the trunk. [Power] It is very easy to overtake within 0-100. [Control] The horizontally opposed engine is blessed with full-time four-wheel drive, and it drives like a car. Braking performance: The automatic brake is a bit sensitive, [fuel consumption] It has only driven more than 300 kilometers. At high speed, the fuel consumption is 12L. Everyone said that if it is within 10, it will fall off after going out for a self-driving tour and running at high speed in the later period.i got this car from idealauto last year ,that was a marvelous experience . that dealer so reliable .

I have only been leasing this car for a few weeks but I am in love! The handling, safety features, styling, and technology are all on point.
Negative Owner Reviews
Jael1818
This car is abysmal and Subaru LIED about the mpg. It's absolutely absurd. In mixed driving - cold weather, warm weather, whatever - is 20mpg. On the hwy it gets 21.5. It's disgusting. And it has ZERO pickup. It sounds like it's dying when I try to get up to speed on the hwy - much less up a hill. My previous car was an Alltrack. They claimed I woudl get 31/22. I got 33/28.5. Sure, it wasn't as good in the snow, but at least I could drive more than a week before filling up again. And I never feared for my life when trying to accelerate accross a street! So awful. But the seats are cushy!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 Subaru Forester boasts a comprehensive suite of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard is Subaru's EyeSight driver assist technology, including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist. The infotainment system ranges from a 6.5-inch to an 8-inch touchscreen, offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Higher trims add features like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic braking. The Touring trim includes DriverFocus, a distraction mitigation system. Optional features include a Harman Kardon premium audio system and integrated navigation.

The 2021 Subaru Forester received excellent crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). The IIHS awarded it a "Top Safety Pick+" designation, their highest honor, indicating exceptional performance in crash tests and availability of advanced safety technologies. The combination of standard safety features and strong crash-test results make the 2021 Forester a safe and family-friendly choice.

2021 Subaru Forester Prices and Market Value

The 2021 Subaru Forester had a starting MSRP around $25,000 and could reach $35,000+ for the Touring trim when new. Current used market prices (as of late 2024) range from approximately $20,000 to $30,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Subarus generally hold their value well due to their reliability and all-wheel-drive capability, leading to lower-than-average depreciation. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (accident history, maintenance records), trim level (higher trims hold more value), and location (demand for AWD vehicles in certain regions).

2021 Subaru Forester Cost of Ownership

The 2021 Subaru Forester is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is decent for an SUV. Maintenance costs are reasonable, especially with regular servicing. While Subaru parts can sometimes be pricier, the vehicle's reliability helps keep repair costs down. Overall, the Forester offers a good balance of affordability and dependability, making it a cost-effective choice for long-term ownership, assuming preventative maintenance is performed.

How Does the 2021 Subaru Forester Compare to Other Vehicle?

The 2021 Subaru Forester competes with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Nissan Rogue. In terms of performance, the Forester is less powerful than some rivals, particularly the Mazda CX-5's turbocharged engine. The RAV4 Prime offers a plug-in hybrid option for better fuel economy and performance. Feature-wise, the Forester is competitive, especially with its standard EyeSight safety suite. Reliability is a Forester strong suit, comparable to the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. The Mazda CX-5 offers a more engaging driving experience, while the Nissan Rogue has a more modern interior.

Price-wise, the Forester is generally competitive.

Alternatives to the Forester include:
  • Toyota RAV4: Similar reliability, more engine options.
  • Honda CR-V: Spacious interior, good fuel economy.
  • Mazda CX-5: More stylish and fun to drive.
  • Hyundai Tucson/Kia Sportage: Packed with features and long warranty.

For buyers prioritizing reliability and standard AWD, the Forester is a solid choice. If performance is a higher priority, the Mazda CX-5 or a RAV4 Hybrid might be better options.

Ranks #360 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2021 Subaru Forester a Good Vehicle?

The 2021 Subaru Forester is an excellent choice for individuals and families seeking a reliable, safe, and practical compact SUV with standard all-wheel drive. It's particularly well-suited for those living in areas with inclement weather or who enjoy outdoor activities. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and priorities. A used 2021 Forester represents good value, particularly if well-maintained. The Premium or Limited trims offer a good balance of features and price. If the budget allows, a newer Forester might offer updated styling and features, but the 2021 remains a solid and dependable choice.

Purchased a 2024 Subaru Forester Sport in March of 2024

Purchased a 2024 Subaru Forester Sport in March of 2024 to commute from Phoenix to Flagstaff. All was okay till 2 days before Thanksgiving. Autonation Subaru has been okay to deal with. After 3 weeks said nothing wrong with it, got it back. Broke down again heading back from Flagstaff. All the lights came on in dash for second time and lost all power. It's back at dealer again. They couldn't diagnose it, and said the diagnostic code says bad fuel pump, but they said it's not. Suddenly now, after being on the phone with Subaru America it's the fuel pump. They've had it now another week, and supposedly it's now the fuel pump. The Service folks have been good to work with, but Subaru America hasn't returned my last 2 phone calls. I'm sorry I purchased this car. If it breaks down again, I'll be getting an attorney that specializes in the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act, and asking Subaru for a Buyback. Subarus suck now. 26k miles.

Good cornering and visibility. Sportily boxy.

I like the solid feel of the car and the sturdy and high ride. Good acceleration. It would be a better SUV if the ground clearance was at least 10” or 12”, with the exhaust pipe properly tucked away!

Spontaneous windshield explosion!

Spontaneous windshield cracked to 2 1/2 feet in just seconds! No stones seen, without warning, bang. The part cost $850.00 more for eye-sight calibration! Subaru dealer said total cost, around $2000!

First Time Subaru Owner

Did not answer Reliability as I just got it but the reviews are good. So far I really - really like it! The more i drive it the more it seems to fit me better. Not a fan of a CVT but this has pep without using the sport drive. Lots of nice soft surfaces in this vehicle which is really nice. Great stereo system. Handles really great! Gas mileage is really good for AWD.

Practical at our age!

We looked at Lexus, BMW, Volvo, and Mercedes SUV’s. This Forrester Touring has similar comfort but greater practicality and visibility. The other luxury cars are clearly more comfortable and refined but not for $25K-$40K more. We are in our mid 70’s and wanted safety and confidence in adverse weather situations. We believe this was a more intelligent choice. It also is attractive and rides quietly and nice.
