The 2010 Subaru Forester is a compact SUV known for its standard all-wheel drive and practicality. Part of the third generation (2009-2013), it offers a blend of car-like handling and SUV versatility. Key trims include the 2.5X, 2.5X Premium, 2.5X Limited, and the turbocharged 2.5XT. Pricing ranged from around $20,000 to $30,000 new. Its symmetrical AWD and spacious interior made it popular for families and outdoor enthusiasts.
The Good

The 2010 Subaru Forester offers dependable performance with its standard AWD, providing security in various weather conditions. Its comfortable ride and spacious interior appeal to practical buyers, while the Forester's reputation for reliability and resale value adds peace of mind. Emotionally, it embodies an adventurous spirit and a sense of capability.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2010 Subaru Forester include potential head gasket issues on the non-turbo models, especially at higher mileage. Oil consumption can also be a concern. The base engine can feel underpowered when fully loaded. Some find the interior design and materials to be somewhat basic.

What Problems Does the 2010 Subaru Forester Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2010 Subaru Forester include head gasket failures, particularly in the non-turbo 2.5L engine. This issue can lead to coolant leaks and overheating. Oil consumption is another common concern, where the engine burns excessive oil between changes. Catalytic converter failure is also reported.

Recalls for the 2010 Forester varied, with some addressing potential issues with the brake light switch, which could affect starting and cruise control. Always check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the most up-to-date recall information using the vehicle's VIN.

Long-term reliability concerns center around the engine issues mentioned above. Proper maintenance, including regular oil changes and coolant checks, is crucial to mitigate these risks. Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system and wheel bearing failures at higher mileage. Turbocharged models require even more diligent maintenance due to the increased stress on the engine components. The electronic stability control (ESC) system can sometimes experience sensor failures. Early model years of this generation (2009-2010) are generally considered slightly more prone to these issues than later years in the production run.

How long will the 2010 Subaru Forester last?

With proper maintenance, a 2010 Subaru Forester can reasonably reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this milestone with regular oil changes, timely repairs, and addressing issues like head gasket leaks promptly. However, neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan. Weaknesses over time include potential for increased oil consumption, wear and tear on suspension components, and the aforementioned head gasket issues. Durability largely depends on preventative care and addressing problems early.

This is a follow up review, I did have to change the head gaskets out on my 2010 forester. I've seen this is common, once again, the work is able to be done by a DIY mechanic. Since 2020 Ive had to change the ignition coil, spark plug wires, head gaskets in February of 2024, and also the crankshaft position sensor. The car had 165,000 miles when the head gaskets needed changed. So far it has 173,000 miles and still runs well. Also changed were the clutch and throwout beairng, and another timing belt change. It still runs very well, the exhaust is getting rusty and have had to fix that, overall its been a good car. I've owned it for 12 years and the ability to work on it yourself is what I really like about it, it isn't fast, but its quite utilitarian and my dog loves it as well. So if you don't mind working on your own stuff its one of the easiest cars to work on with the way the engine is oriented in the longitudinal position. I've always changed the oil every 4-5000 miles since I've had it, the heads and valves were completely clean. I'd say if one keeps up the servicing on these they are good vehicles to own. Not looking forward to when it blows, they don't make plain cars like this now adays.

We needed to purchase a all wheel drive SUV. Very spacious and comfortable, my first Subaru but who'll not be my last. Enjoying the vehicle.

Purchased a 2010 Forrester. Two months later lost a key. The key is $95 and $50 to program but I expected that. The problem is the key has to be cut in Georgia and shipped to your dealer and it takes a week. The car comes with a roadside driver assistance packeage. I asked what would happen if I am traveling, lose a key and call the roadside assistance number. I was told they would tow me to the closest dealer and I would sit there a week waiting for a key. That leaves the onlu alternative is to wire a spare key under the car which totally nullifies all of the security featues. I actually would not have purchased this car just over this issue.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Subaru Forester's built-in tech was fairly basic for its time. Standard entertainment features included a CD player, AM/FM radio, and auxiliary audio input. Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems with satellite radio. Navigation was an optional feature.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and anti-lock brakes (ABS) were standard. Optional features included fog lights.

Safety features included standard front, side, and side curtain airbags. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) were generally good. The 2010 Forester earned "Top Safety Pick" status. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) ratings should also be consulted for a comprehensive safety assessment. It’s important to note that these ratings are based on the testing standards of the time.

The Forester lacked advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, or automatic emergency braking, which are common in newer vehicles. The focus was more on fundamental safety features and the enhanced traction provided by the standard all-wheel-drive system.

2010 Subaru Forester Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2010 Subaru Forester ranged from approximately $20,000 to $30,000 depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices vary greatly depending on mileage, condition, and location, but typically range from $5,000 to $12,000. Subaru vehicles, in general, hold their value relatively well due to their reputation for reliability and the popularity of all-wheel drive. Factors affecting resale value include maintenance history, accident history, and overall condition. Higher mileage and neglected maintenance will significantly reduce the price.

2010 Subaru Forester Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2010 Subaru Forester are typically moderate. Fuel costs are average for a compact SUV. Maintenance costs can be higher than average due to the potential for head gasket and oil consumption issues. Repair costs can also be elevated, especially if these major engine repairs are needed. Long-term ownership costs can be moderate to high, depending on how well the vehicle has been maintained and the frequency of repairs.

2010 Subaru Forester Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Subaru Forester is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Subaru Forester Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2010 Subaru Forester competes with vehicles like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Mazda CX-5. In terms of performance, the Forester's standard AWD is a significant advantage over the FWD standard on many rivals. The turbocharged 2.5XT offers quicker acceleration than many competitors. Feature-wise, the Forester was generally comparable, although some rivals offered more advanced technology options. Reliability is a mixed bag; while Subarus have a strong reputation, the Forester's head gasket issues can detract from this. Pricing is generally competitive.

The Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 are often considered more reliable choices, albeit without standard AWD. The Mazda CX-5 offers a more engaging driving experience.

Alternatives to the 2010 Forester include:
  • Honda CR-V: Renowned for reliability and practicality.
  • Toyota RAV4: Similar to the CR-V, with a strong reputation for dependability.
  • Mazda CX-5 (later models): More stylish and fun to drive.
  • Nissan Rogue: Offers a comfortable ride and decent fuel economy.

If AWD is a must-have, the Forester is a strong contender. If reliability is the top priority, the CR-V or RAV4 might be better choices.

Ranks #419 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Subaru Forester a Good Wagon?

The 2010 Subaru Forester is ideal for those needing a practical and capable compact SUV with standard all-wheel drive. It's a good choice for those living in areas with inclement weather or who enjoy outdoor activities. Whether it's worth buying depends on the price and condition. A well-maintained example with service records addressing potential issues is preferable.

Consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic, especially to check for head gasket leaks and oil consumption. The turbocharged 2.5XT offers more power, but also potentially higher maintenance costs. If AWD is not a necessity, other more reliable options might be a better fit. However, if AWD is paramount, the Forester is a strong contender.

This is a follow up review, I did have to change the head

Very reliable for the 2010 2.

Very reliable for the 2010 2.5 limited I bought used in 2023 with 196k miles. very sporty feel and look, quick response and the automatic was quiet even when pushed, acceleration on the base engine was awesome and driving was lots of fun. the leather seats are incredible although the lack of dual zone as an option was disappointing. The brakes were somewhat uninspiring but got the job done, and the steering feel and moonroof were awesome. Gas mileage is decent even in 2024 but was somewhat low in comparison to the 2010 outback at 22 city and 27 highway, at 17 city and 21 highwayI for the forester 2010 . I got in a high speed accident and cabin intrusion was non existent and all occupants got out uninjured. Best car I've ever had, would buy over any other Subaru new or used.

Very enjoyable ownerships so far.

Original owner, drive for 10 years and 160k miles. With timely maintenance and regular oil changes every 5k miles had no issues with the car what so ever with very few minor anoences. 1. The car will trigger check Engine light if the gas cap is not sealed correctly. Had to check after every fill-up but the first several times was scarry. AC is week. In a heat wave you will sweat a little. Non turbo models fell slightly underpowerd. Not a big issue but you can feel it at times. Other than that I love the car. Spacious and roomy. Good visibility and AWD system you can not beat.

The best car I've owned

I left a review several years ago and still am impressed with the forester, I've done most of the maintenance on it myself and it is do able, you can actually service the car which is amazing considering most cars in comparison. It does and has always used some oil, you must add a quart every 2000-2500 miles which is I hear inherent to the boxer design. It has been a good car and I plan on driving it till it drops which may be a while. I changed the struts in the front, along with wheel bearings and front discs for the brakes, ball joints, etc. The struts were beginning to rattle at 122,000 miles. You need to change the timing belt before 100,000 miles on these also of which I had someone else do, I've changed the spark plugs twice on the car and its not too hard to do, not issues other than a new battery and routine maintenance besides that. It drives just as it did when I first got it with 37,000 miles on it 6 or so years ago.

Forget the commercials, it’s better than that.

A safe reliable vehicle that will be around long enough hand down. I can take me just about anywhere I want to go and to dinner too!

Tough and Pretty!

I love me Subaru- she is durable yet beautiful! I love the moon roof and the light interior. I wish this model had bluetooth, but there's an aux chord option and multiple charging outlets.
