The 2023 Subaru Forester, a compact SUV, continues Subaru's legacy of reliable, adventure-ready vehicles. Its popularity stems from its standard all-wheel drive and focus on safety. Key trims include the Base, Premium, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring. Model years have remained fairly consistent in recent generations. The pricing range typically falls between $27,000 and $37,000. It stands out for its off-road capability and spacious interior.
The Good

The 2023 Subaru Forester offers a blend of practicality and emotional appeal. Its symmetrical all-wheel drive delivers confident performance in various conditions. Known for its reliability and comfortable ride, it's a practical choice. The rugged design and association with outdoor adventures appeal to emotional buyers, offering a sense of freedom and capability. Decent fuel efficiency and strong resale value add to its overall value.

The Bad

The 2023 Subaru Forester's weaknesses primarily revolve around its engine performance. Acceleration can feel sluggish, especially when fully loaded or going uphill. The continuously variable transmission (CVT), while fuel-efficient, can sometimes drone. Infotainment system responsiveness has also been noted as a potential drawback. Some find the exterior styling somewhat bland compared to rivals.

What Problems Does the 2023 Subaru Forester Have?

The 2023 Subaru Forester generally enjoys good reliability ratings, but some potential issues exist. Some owners have reported problems with the infotainment system, including freezing or slow response times. The CVT transmission, while generally reliable, has been a source of complaints for some, with concerns about "juddering" or hesitation. Oil consumption has been a concern in older Subaru models, although this is less prevalent in the 2023 model. Recalls are tracked by the NHTSA, and it's always best to check for any open recalls specific to your VIN. Long-term reliability hinges on regular maintenance, particularly fluid changes for the CVT and timely oil changes. Pre-2019 models (specifically 2014-2018) had some class action lawsuits over excessive oil consumption, but Subaru has since addressed some of the causes of it in newer models. Ensuring that the vehicle has had all of its scheduled maintenance according to Subaru's recommendation is highly suggested to avoid any long-term issues. Overall, the 2023 Forester seems to be a dependable choice, however potential owners should research any TSB's (Technical Service Bulletins) or recalls reported, as well as perform a thorough pre-purchase inspection.

How long will the 2023 Subaru Forester last?

With proper maintenance, a 2023 Subaru Forester can easily last 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-15 years. Subarus, in general, are known for their longevity. Key to this is adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule, particularly oil changes, CVT fluid changes (every 30,000-60,000 miles), and regular inspections. Potential long-term weaknesses may include wear and tear on suspension components, particularly if used frequently off-road. The infotainment system may also show its age over time in terms of processing speed and software updates. However, the engine and drivetrain are generally durable if well-maintained. Resale values stay fairly high, making it a good investment.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2023 Subaru Forester comes standard with Subaru's EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist. The base model features a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims offer an 8-inch touchscreen, a premium Harman Kardon sound system, and integrated navigation.

Optional features include blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, reverse automatic braking, and a driver monitoring system that detects driver fatigue or distraction.

The Forester typically receives excellent crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). Checking their websites will give you the most accurate data. Safety is a strong selling point for the Forester, and it includes features like automatic high beams and steering responsive headlights on higher trims. The Starlink Safety and Security system offers features like automatic collision notification, SOS emergency assistance, and stolen vehicle recovery services. These features significantly enhance the overall safety and convenience of the 2023 Subaru Forester.

2023 Subaru Forester Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2023 Subaru Forester ranged from approximately $27,000 for the base model to around $37,000 for the Touring trim. Used market prices will vary based on mileage, condition, and trim level but generally fall between $22,000 and $34,000. Subarus hold their value well due to their reputation for reliability and standard all-wheel drive. Lower mileage, excellent condition, and a clean title will command higher resale prices. The Wilderness trim tends to hold its value exceptionally well due to its added off-road capabilities and unique styling.

2023 Subaru Forester Cost of Ownership

The 2023 Subaru Forester is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is decent for its class. Scheduled maintenance is relatively affordable. While repairs can be slightly more expensive than some competitors, its reliability helps keep those costs down. Long-term ownership costs are reasonable, thanks to its strong resale value and durable mechanicals. Overall, the Forester provides a balance between initial price, running costs, and long-term value, making it a sensible choice.

How Does the 2023 Subaru Forester Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2023 Subaru Forester competes with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Nissan Rogue. The Forester's standard all-wheel drive gives it an edge in inclement weather and off-road capability compared to some base models of its rivals. The RAV4 offers a hybrid option for better fuel economy, while the CR-V boasts a more spacious interior. The Mazda CX-5 provides a more engaging driving experience with a more powerful engine option and stylish interior. The Nissan Rogue has a more modern interior design and updated technology.

In terms of reliability, the Forester is generally on par with the RAV4 and CR-V. Price-wise, it is competitive within the segment. A potential alternative, if you prioritize fuel economy, would be the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or Honda CR-V Hybrid. If you value a more engaging driving experience, the Mazda CX-5 is a strong contender. If you need more space and want a comfortable ride, the Honda CR-V is a great choice. Overall, each has its strengths, and choosing depends on individual needs and preferences. The Forester shines with its standard AWD and reputation for safety.

Final Verdict: Is the 2023 Subaru Forester a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2023 Subaru Forester is an excellent choice for individuals or small families seeking a reliable, safe, and capable compact SUV with standard all-wheel drive. It's ideal for those who live in areas with challenging weather conditions or enjoy light off-roading. Whether it's worth buying depends on your priorities; if you value fuel efficiency above all else, hybrid competitors might be better. Both new and used models offer good value, but consider a used model if you can find one in good condition to save money. The Premium trim strikes a good balance of features and value, while the Wilderness trim is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts.

Likes: spacious interior despite modest exterior

Likes: spacious interior despite modest exterior dimensions, easy to maneuver, great visibility all around, comfortable ride, good traction, handling, and braking, nice interior finish on sport model, strong steering responsive headlights yet they don't blind opposing traffic, very good optional Harmon sound system, numerous effective safety features, low insurance premiums, adequate acceleration..a few cons: actual economy slightly under EPA estimates, seat may be a bit too firm for some but easy to address by adding a thin seat cushion, mandatory sunroof on all but the base model..I wish Subaru would just make that a single option..rough engine start-stop ..however I disable it each time I start engine so it can be a non issue...no reliability issues yet but since this has a cvt and fairly complex safety features, long term reliability is unknown..

Safety first

This is our second Forester. Our first was a 2011 Premium we bought as a CPO in 2014 and unfortunately went through the headache of excessive oil consumption within months of buying it. Subaru did eventually replace the engine short block on their dime, but only after repeated oil consumption tests and being told by the dealer service department that it was within normal limits. Calling Subaru of America was the only way we got it resolved. I was impressed that they approved the service, and that's the reason we bought another Subaru. We also have a 2018 Outback Premium in our garage--no oil consumption, and no major issues except replacing the radio for failed lighting behind the volume knob and a minor leak in the oil pan (no dripping underneath the car though) at about 42k miles. We like our 2023 Forester Sport overall, and first and foremost we like its excellent safety ratings and features. I will say the ride is much firmer than our Outback which is only a couple hundred pounds heavier. Wish it had a little more storage in the center console and beneath the climate controls. We look forward to many years of driving with the Forester (and our Outback). Based on our experience, I do feel getting a Subaru-backed extended warranty is worth it for peace of mind (we bought them for our first Forester and now our Outback and both eventually paid for themselves). You DON'T have to buy the warranty when you purchase the vehicle. Call different dealers in your state and ask for their price on an extended warranty for your vehicle--we saved hundreds of dollars by doing this. You have until your manufacturer warranty expires to add an extended warranty.

Mostly happy

The radio and the heat settings leave a lot to be desired. If you’re looking for a heater setting, you won’t find it. Nothing annoys me more than unrequested updates on flood watch/warning. it just can’t be tailored to exactly where you live. But every 6 minutes is a bit of overkill. And our previous Forester had a tray in the middle storage (glove box). Even though we asked our salesman about that, we have heard nothing. Missing the change tray a lot.

Great Bang for the Buck

This is my third Subaru. The first was a 2018 Outback which proved to be a little to large for my taste so I traded it in for my first Forester a 2021. This was a great car until someone side swiped me in an accident and totaled it. I was so impressed with the job it did protecting me from harm that I bought another one in 2023 after the accident and it is even better. I have had a chevy small pick up, two jeeps, a camaro, a Acura and two BMWs and in the area that counts most, safety, the Forester outshines them all. It may not be as fast some of my previous cars but I am older now and the police tell me I need to slow down some. Ha!Ha! It has more pop than you think.

It's a keeper for many years to come

I was more interested in reliability and bang for the buck when I bought the 2023 Forester. Impressing other people with zero-to-sixty times and options that add no function purpose soon loose their appeal to me and I have already owned nearly every type of flashy car, from Mercedes Benz to BMW to Jeep and Lincoln. But their appeal wore thin after a year or two. The Subaru Forester is comfortable and versatile, a solid value that is practical for every day life. It's a keeper for many years to come, even if EVs eventually become practical and convenient (a long way off though). No regrets.
