2009 Subaru Forester Review: Unreliable & Costly Small Wagon Buyers Should Avoid

Rating: 4.20
Based on 91 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2009 Subaru Forester is a compact crossover SUV, part of the third generation (2009-2013). It followed Subaru's tradition of offering capable vehicles with standard symmetrical all-wheel drive. Key trims included the base 2.5X, 2.5X Premium, 2.5X Limited, and the turbocharged 2.5XT. New pricing ranged from around $20,000 to $30,000. It's popular for its practicality, reliability, all-weather capability, and a comfortable ride, making it a dependable choice for families and outdoor enthusiasts.
The Good

The 2009 Forester offers reliable all-wheel-drive performance appealing to practical buyers needing all-weather capability. It provides comfortable seating and a spacious interior. The design is functional and utilitarian. While fuel economy isn't class-leading, it's acceptable. The Forester offers good value as a dependable and versatile vehicle, inspiring confidence and security, emotionally appealing to those valuing safety and peace of mind.

The Bad

The 2009 Subaru Forester's weaknesses include potential head gasket issues on the non-turbo models, which can be costly to repair. Some owners report issues with oil consumption. The interior materials can feel somewhat cheap. Also, the base engine can feel underpowered, especially when fully loaded or driving uphill. Watch for rust, particularly in areas with road salt.

What Problems Does the 2009 Subaru Forester Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 Subaru Forester include head gasket failures, particularly in the non-turbo 2.5X models. This issue can lead to coolant leaks, overheating, and significant repair costs. Oil consumption is another common concern, where the engine burns excessive amounts of oil between oil changes. Some owners have reported issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT), although the 2009 model didn't have it, this is more of a concern on later models. Other reported issues include problems with the air conditioning system, particularly the compressor. Potential rust issues, especially in areas with heavy salt usage during winter, should also be inspected. Recalls may have been issued for certain components, so it's advisable to check the NHTSA website for any open recalls specific to the vehicle's VIN. Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the head gasket and oil consumption issues potentially leading to shorter engine life if not addressed promptly.

How long will the 2009 Subaru Forester last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Subaru Forester can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report getting 15-20 years of service. However, consistent maintenance is crucial. Neglecting oil changes, failing to address leaks promptly, or ignoring warning signs can significantly shorten its lifespan. The head gasket issue remains a primary long-term durability concern. Regular coolant flushes and monitoring oil levels are essential. Rust can also become a significant problem, especially in colder climates, impacting structural integrity and requiring costly repairs. Early detection and prevention are key to maximizing longevity.

We love Subaru cars. We recently purchased an Ascent in the last week and went back to Subaru because we have been very satisfied. The Two Foresters we have owned and a previous purchase of a Tribeca have made us life time Subaru owners

Spatial, smooth and AWD, this will become a perfect adventure vehicle. Gigantic moon roof, great audio sound, and a very clean motor. For. 2009 it is definitely a solid vehicle.

This is a car for my 17 year old son who fishes with his friends a lot! this is the perfect / safe vehicle for him to get around in! Am very looking forward to the all wheel drive for the snow for him!
Negative Owner Reviews
Good Driver
This is absolutely the worst car I have ever owned. And I've owned cars for 40 years. Before this car I had four Legacy wagons in a row. I sold each of them when they were at about 120k miles, except my last one which, with only one major bit of work around 130k, had 260k on it when I sold it to buy this new piece of junk, the 2009 Sub Forester. This Forester has been nothing but trouble and expense. It had a leaky head gasket at 30k which I had fixed under warranty. At 70k (and only 2 1/2 years old) it required replacing the coil tower, the lines to the spark plugs, and all of the plugs for $750. Last week at 86k miles and one car payment from being mine it apparently was burning oil (bad rings? Shouldn't have been happening on an engine that has 86k highway miles) and burned it all up and threw a rod. So now it needs a new engine. $4-5k. I had all routine maintenance done on this car regularly except that I had missed my last oil change. But it shouldn't have burned it all up. I've heard so many nightmare Forester stories since this happened. I will never buy a Subaru again after having this lemon.

We bought this car looking for a replacement for our 98' legacy. We looked around at Rav4, Escape, CR-V, and the old Equinox. We missed the new Equinox by about a week, and was perhaps the worst mistake ever. The 09' Forester X is absolutely the most basic of what can barely be called an "SUV". Lets face it, this is an outback with a higher ceiling, and it shows. The four cylinder engine is LOUD! It does a decent job when it comes to acceleration and power for a four cylinder, but the transmission is on some kind of crack as is hikes up to around six-thousand RPMs at completely random times. The ride is not smooth, you feel every bump in the road, the seats are comfortable, but I cannot find a single comfortable driving position. The fact that the rear seats do not fold down makes cargo space extremely limited and the sloped back seat makes butting large objects in the vehicle a very difficult task. The fuel economy is good, Ive averaged up to 31.5 mpg, but in the winter it takes a huge dive, this car is not a cold weather vehicle and averages about 13 mpg on a cold morning. The interior is incredibly cheap, toy cars have better build quality as parts of the interior are continually falling off, not to mention the hard cheap plastics they're made of. The dash controls are so-so, some buttons are hard to reach, but radio controls are nice and simple. No rear air vents, a disappointing feature in this day and age, exterior is decent, hood is unattractive, but the car has an overall sporty look. The bottom line is, if you're looking for the cheapest SUV on the market you might like this, but there are much better options like the Ford Escape or the 2010 Equinox.
dont buy xt
I have had 09 Forester XT 4at-s since June of 08. The car currently has 9610 miles on it. Unfortunately, at 9610 miles [Thanksgiving night on a remote road with 3month old & 3 yr old in car-in a snow storm] the car ground to a halt. Literally, the car ground to a halt with noises just like having all of your silverware in the disposal. The check engine light came and literally 10 seconds later the car was dead. Would not turn over..nothing. Subaru road side service came in about an hour and a half; and dropped the car off at a local dealer. Today, I found out that the engine has seized and it needs a new engine. The car was not driven hard and it has had all the recommended maintenance done at a Subaru dealership. I dont get it. I felt like I did all the research prior to getting this car. It was good on paper with the right mix of safety, gas mileage, performance ,cost etc. All I can do at this point is spread the word to NOT buy this car. It has been a very disappointing experience and I hope no one else has to endure what I'm going through now with Subaru of America. I think I'm stuck with a Lemon. Dont believe all the good reviews. I'm sure that Subaru didnt send the kind of car I got to someone who does car reviews.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Subaru Forester's built-in tech and entertainment features were relatively basic compared to modern vehicles. Standard features included a CD player with MP3 compatibility and an auxiliary audio input. Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems with more speakers. Driver-assistance features were limited, with standard ABS and stability control. No advanced driver-assistance systems like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking were available. Safety features included standard front and side airbags, as well as side curtain airbags. Optional features included fog lights and a security system.

Crash test ratings were generally positive. The 2009 Forester received good ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), earning a "Top Safety Pick" award. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also gave it favorable ratings in its crash tests. These ratings reflect the Forester's strong performance in protecting occupants in the event of a collision. While not packed with the latest technology, the 2009 Forester prioritized safety and provided adequate entertainment features for its time.

2009 Subaru Forester Prices and Market Value

The 2009 Subaru Forester's new price ranged from approximately $20,000 to $30,000 depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, depending on mileage, condition, and location. The Forester has experienced significant depreciation over the years. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, overall condition (mechanical and cosmetic), maintenance history (with records), and geographic location (demand for AWD vehicles). Models with fewer miles and a documented service history command higher prices. The turbocharged 2.5XT models often retain slightly higher value than the naturally aspirated 2.5X trims due to their increased performance.

2009 Subaru Forester Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2009 Subaru Forester are typically average for its class. Fuel costs are moderate, with the non-turbo models offering slightly better economy. Maintenance can be relatively affordable if regular servicing is followed. However, potential head gasket repairs can significantly increase long-term ownership costs. Parts availability is generally good, but some repairs can be labor-intensive. Overall, while not exceptionally cheap, the Forester isn't excessively costly to own if potential maintenance issues are addressed proactively. Neglecting maintenance can lead to expensive repairs.

2009 Subaru Forester Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Subaru Forester is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Subaru Forester Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

Compared to its rivals in 2009, such as the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Mazda CX-7, the Subaru Forester offered standard all-wheel drive, which was a significant advantage. The CR-V and RAV4 offered optional AWD, while the CX-7 was more performance-oriented but less fuel-efficient. The Forester's reliability is generally good, but the head gasket issue is a notable concern compared to the CR-V and RAV4, which are known for their excellent reliability. The Forester's interior and features were competitive, but not class-leading. In terms of price, the Forester was generally similar to its rivals. For performance, the Mazda CX-7 offered a more engaging driving experience, but at the expense of fuel economy. If reliability is a top priority and AWD is not essential, the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 are better alternatives. If all-wheel drive is a must and the potential for head gasket issues is addressed, the Forester remains a competitive choice. The Nissan Rogue is another similar alternative to consider.

Ranks #423 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Subaru Forester a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2009 Subaru Forester is ideal for individuals and families who need a reliable and capable vehicle with all-wheel drive for all-weather performance. It's a good choice for those who prioritize practicality and safety over luxury or cutting-edge technology. Whether it's worth buying depends on its condition and maintenance history. A well-maintained Forester with documented repairs, especially regarding the head gaskets, can be a great value. It's best to have a mechanic inspect any used 2009 Forester before purchasing. The 2.5XT trim offers better performance but may have slightly higher maintenance costs. If AWD is not a necessity, more reliable options like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 might be more suitable.

I bought my 2009 forester with 200k on the click.

I bought my 2009 forester with 200k on the click. She was well locked after but has a few scratches here and there but paint work is still beautiful. Performance is great but she is heavy on fuel. This is expected from an AWD as the engine is pulling all 4 wheels continuously at the same time. No oil leaks, aircon works well. The only major issue I have had was the thermostat falling. I caused my radiator to crack due to pressure building up. I removed it and she is running perfectly. I live at the coast in South africa so our winter temp never drop below 10° and our summer average at 30°. Overall, I'll will be buying another forester with it's great space and power....love it

Dependable AWD

Have a 2009 with 110K miles on it. Very dependable. Averaging 25.8 MPG right now- not too bad for older AWD. I do drive the speed limit and accelerate probably slower than most, and brake easy. Only averaged 24 or so on the Oregon 101 by ocean- hilly, curvy and logging trucks on my butt. Good car. Don't miss my big has guzzler at all!!

Our third Subaru.

We love Subaru cars. We recently purchased an Ascent in the last week and went back to Subaru because we have been very satisfied. The Two Foresters we have owned and a previous purchase of a Tribeca have made us life time Subaru owners

Reliable

Spatial, smooth and AWD, this will become a perfect adventure vehicle. Gigantic moon roof, great audio sound, and a very clean motor. For. 2009 it is definitely a solid vehicle.

Am really enjoying driving this Subaru!

Love the interior. Soft, comfortable seating; very roomy and the hatchback is quite spacious. Has a smooth ride with cold air and warm heat. Also a great sound system!

I loved my Subaru

I am selling this because I need a larger car. Otherwise I would put the money into it to get another 100,000 miles out of it. We took it camping, on road trips, and was my daily driver. The Subaru all-wheel drive system is great. Took us through the snowmageddons we've had the past couple of winters with no problems at all. This would be a great car for a teenager - it's safe, reliable, and stable.

Will not let you down

This car just met the end of its life the other day as someone crossed the freeway in front of me, causing me to t-bone them at about 45mph. Airbags deployed, car totaled, but I walked away from it with a bruised knee, and that's all! I could not have wished anything more for keeping me safe in that crash. This car was a hand-me-down from my dad, and never really let either one of us down. It was spacious enough where I could fit my road bike in it without taking the wheels off, and my mountain bike if I was really desperate. The snow driving was absolutely stellar, very confidence inspiring. You could play around in snowy corners, and it would right itself in an instant. It was not a terribly exciting car to drive, although having the manual transmission did help that. The 2.5L non-turbo was plenty for getting up to highway speeds in a timely manner. Cornering was pretty boring. Subaru definitely designed the car to be comfortable, not sharp. Replaced the sway bar to something stiffer, and it still wallows around turns. Then again, that's not what the car was designed to do. The only real reliability issue we encountered was that the engine developed a tendency to hesitate when accelerating in low RPMs, usually from second gear. Mash the throttle down, and then engine just pulsated until the revs got above 2k. It could have been dangerous in an emergency situation. Bought the car used in 2013, drove as a commuter until May 2020.
