The BMW X1 is a subcompact luxury SUV. The first generation was introduced in 2009. The 2021 BMW X1 is part of the second generation (F48), which debuted in 2015. Key trims include the sDrive28i (front-wheel drive) and xDrive28i (all-wheel drive). The original pricing ranged from approximately $36,000 to $46,000. It's popular due to its blend of BMW driving dynamics, practicality, and relatively affordable entry point into the luxury SUV market.
The Good

The 2021 BMW X1 offers a sporty driving experience (performance) expected from BMW, combined with surprising practicality for its size (comfort, value). Its handsome design appeals emotionally, while its fuel efficiency and available all-wheel drive (efficiency) cater to practical needs. The X1 provides a solid blend of luxury and utility, at a competitive price, appealing to those seeking a premium experience without breaking the bank.

The Bad

Some reviewers note the 2021 BMW X1's base engine can feel strained under heavy loads. The infotainment system, while functional, may seem less intuitive compared to rivals. The rear seat space, while adequate, isn't class-leading. Also, be mindful of optional packages, as they can significantly increase the price.

Analysis

What Problems Does the 2021 BMW X1 Have?

The 2021 BMW X1 generally enjoys decent reliability ratings, but as with any vehicle, there are potential issues to be aware of.
Frequently reported problems, while not widespread, sometimes include issues with the infotainment system (glitches, connectivity problems), and minor electrical faults. Some owners have reported occasional issues with the climate control system. Engine oil consumption should be monitored, although this isn't a pervasive problem.

Recalls are relatively infrequent for the 2021 model year, but it's always advisable to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the latest recall information using the vehicle's VIN. It is crucial to check for any outstanding recalls before purchasing a used X1.

Long-term reliability concerns generally revolve around the complexity of the vehicle's electronics. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and fluid checks, is crucial for maintaining the X1's longevity. Some owners have noted that the SensaTec upholstery, while durable, can show wear over time. Overall, the 2021 X1 appears to be a relatively reliable vehicle, but proactive maintenance and awareness of potential electronic issues are recommended. Always obtain a pre-purchase inspection from a qualified mechanic before buying a used model.

How long will the 2021 BMW X1 last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2021 BMW X1 can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years of service. Key to its longevity is adhering to BMW's recommended service schedule, including timely oil changes, fluid flushes, and inspections.
Long-term durability hinges on addressing potential weaknesses. The plastic components in the cooling system can become brittle over time, so proactive replacement is advisable. Also, monitoring for oil leaks and addressing them promptly can prevent more significant engine issues. The infotainment system may require software updates to maintain optimal performance. With proper care, the X1 can provide many years of reliable service.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2021 BMW X1 boasts a comprehensive suite of technology, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features.

Built-in Tech and Entertainment: The X1 comes standard with an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring navigation, Apple CarPlay compatibility, Bluetooth connectivity, and a seven-speaker audio system. Optional upgrades include a Harman Kardon premium sound system. The iDrive interface is generally user-friendly, though some may find it takes time to master all its features.

Driver-Assistance Features: Standard safety equipment includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and speed limit information. Optional driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, parking assistant, and a head-up display.

Safety Features: Standard safety features include multiple airbags, stability control, and traction control. The X1 also features BMW's Active Driving Assistant, which combines several driver-assistance technologies.

Crash-Test Ratings: The 2021 BMW X1 typically receives strong crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). It's advisable to check both organizations' websites for the most up-to-date ratings.

Overall, the 2021 BMW X1 offers a well-rounded package of technology and safety features, making it a competitive choice in its segment. The availability of optional features allows buyers to customize the X1 to their specific needs and preferences.

2021 BMW X1 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2021 BMW X1 sDrive28i started around $36,000, while the xDrive28i began around $38,000. As of late 2024, used prices typically range from $22,000 to $32,000, depending on condition, mileage, and options.
Depreciation is relatively moderate for a luxury SUV. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, and the presence of desirable options packages. Well-maintained examples with lower mileage and sought-after features command higher prices. BMW's reputation for reliability also plays a role in maintaining resale value.

2021 BMW X1 Cost of Ownership

The 2021 BMW X1 lands in the middle ground regarding ownership costs. Insurance premiums are typically higher than non-luxury vehicles. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the front-wheel-drive sDrive28i. Maintenance, while generally predictable with scheduled servicing, can become expensive if repairs are needed, particularly for specialized BMW parts. Overall, the X1 isn't the most economical, but it's also not the most costly in its class. Budgeting for potential repairs is advisable for long-term ownership.

Continuing with My Favorite Model-the Amazing X!

I couldn't be happier with this vehicle. It was made for ME! Its height makes it easy and painless to enter and exit the driver's seat with my arthritic knees....I just slide in & out in nicely! The "head up" feature is very helpful every day. Those are the best headlights ever for night driving. No complaints from this customer-in her 3rd X!

So far so good

The first thing one notices is the quietness of the ride. After that, the handling - surefooted and solid. Love the extensive sunroof. Only owned the car a short while, so hard to comment on value for the money, but loving the easy acceleration of this car and the smooth handling around curves. I wanted a smaller vehicle since usually just me, but one that can handle winter driving and steep hills. The X1 more than fits that bill.

Buying a new BMW X-1

So far, my wife, for whom I bought the car, is extremely happy. It is too soon to judge the overall reliability of the vehicle, since we bought it only yesterday. But the car has the sport and premium pkges, so is fully loaded, with beautiful mocha leather seats and trim: a very elegant interior and I love the "heads-up" display.
