Rating: 4.47
Based on 43 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2007 Subaru Impreza is a compact car known for its standard all-wheel drive, a hallmark of Subaru vehicles. Available as a sedan or hatchback, the Impreza offered practicality and capability. Key trims included the base model, the WRX (for performance), and the Outback Sport (a more rugged hatchback). Model years of this generation ran from 2007-2011. The original MSRP price ranged roughly from $15,000 to $25,000 depending on trim. Its popularity stemmed from its AWD system, making it a safe and capable choice in various weather conditions.
The Good

The 2007 Impreza offers the security and confidence of all-wheel drive, appealing to practical buyers seeking safety in adverse conditions. The WRX trim provides a dose of sporty performance for those seeking fun. While not luxurious, it's comfortable enough for daily driving. It's generally reliable and provides good value for the money. Overall, it is a solid choice for someone looking for a dependable, all-weather capable vehicle.

The Bad

The 2007 Impreza can suffer from head gasket issues, especially in the 2.5L engine. Oil consumption can be a concern. The interior materials are basic and can feel cheap. Rust can be an issue in areas with road salt. The naturally aspirated models aren't particularly exciting in terms of performance. Therefore, careful inspection and maintenance records are critical.

What Problems Does the 2007 Subaru Impreza Have?

The 2007 Subaru Impreza, particularly those equipped with the 2.5L engine (both naturally aspirated and turbocharged), are known for head gasket failures. This issue can lead to coolant leaks, overheating, and engine damage. Oil consumption is another frequently reported problem, with some owners experiencing excessive oil usage between oil changes. It's wise to monitor oil levels regularly. Rust, especially in areas that use road salt, can affect the undercarriage and body panels. The WRX models, due to their turbocharged nature and higher performance, may experience turbocharger issues or require more frequent maintenance.

Recalls for the 2007 Impreza have addressed issues like potential fuel leaks and brake light switch failures. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to determine if all applicable recalls have been performed. Long-term reliability hinges on proper maintenance. Neglecting oil changes, failing to address leaks promptly, and ignoring unusual noises can significantly shorten the lifespan of the vehicle. The 2007 model year falls within a period where Subaru experienced more head gasket issues than later models.

How long will the 2007 Subaru Impreza last?

A well-maintained 2007 Subaru Impreza can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more. With average driving habits (12,000-15,000 miles per year) and diligent maintenance, expect 15+ years of service. However, key factors affecting longevity include timely oil changes (every 3,000-5,000 miles), addressing coolant leaks promptly (especially head gasket related), and preventing rust. Weaknesses over time include potential for head gasket failure, increased oil consumption, wear and tear on suspension components, and potential rust issues. Ignoring these issues will substantially shorten its lifespan. Regular timing belt replacement is also critical.

2007 Impreza wrx STi - already have to replace head gasket at 103k miles. Other than that it's a fun weekend car. Gas mileage really sucks on the STi model 19/24 mpg.

2.5 liter engine with good power. Quick heater output to stay warm. Lots of cargo room in the back. I feel safe in this car, nice solid feel to the ride.
Negative Owner Reviews
Sonic007
Good car. A lot of things about it are different from most cars, sometimes this makes it a little harder or more expensive to fix. Main thing i can say is to look at it well before buying, sometimes the previous owner(s) may have tried to cut corners because of the extra expenses involved in ownership. Also due to their unique boxer engine design, they are know to burn oil at higher millages.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2007 Subaru Impreza's built-in tech and entertainment features were relatively basic by today's standards. Standard features included a basic AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered an upgraded audio system with more speakers and possibly a 6-disc CD changer. There were no built-in navigation or advanced infotainment systems. Driver-assistance features were limited; ABS and standard AWD were the primary safety aids. Stability control (VDC) was available on some trims.

Safety features included front airbags and side-impact airbags. Optional features included fog lights, sunroof, and keyless entry.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) were generally good for the 2007 Impreza. The IIHS gave it a "Good" rating in frontal offset and side-impact crash tests. NHTSA ratings varied but were generally four or five stars for frontal and side crash protection. Keep in mind safety technology has improved dramatically since 2007, so while safe for its time, it doesn't offer the advanced safety of newer vehicles. Remember to consult official sources for the most accurate and up-to-date crash test information.

2007 Subaru Impreza Prices and Market Value

The 2007 Subaru Impreza had a starting MSRP of around $15,000, while the WRX version started closer to $24,000. Current used market prices vary widely based on condition, mileage, and trim, but generally range from $4,000 to $10,000. Depreciation has been significant, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Factors affecting resale value include the overall condition of the car (rust-free is a major plus), maintenance records (proving regular oil changes and timing belt replacement), and the presence of desirable features like a sunroof or upgraded audio. The WRX models typically command a higher resale value due to their performance capabilities.

2007 Subaru Impreza Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2007 Subaru Impreza are generally moderate. Fuel costs will depend on driving habits, but expect average fuel economy for a compact car. Maintenance can be relatively affordable, although potential head gasket repairs can be expensive. Regular maintenance, like oil changes and tire rotations, is crucial to keeping long-term costs down. Overall, it's reasonably economical to own, but be prepared for potential repairs common to this model, especially head gasket or oil consumption issues. Budgeting for these repairs is a smart idea.

2007 Subaru Impreza Insurance

Insurance for a 2007 Subaru Impreza is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2007 Subaru Impreza Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2007 Subaru Impreza competed with vehicles like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Mitsubishi Lancer. In terms of performance, the WRX model surpassed most of these rivals, offering a significant power advantage. However, the base Impreza's performance was comparable to the Corolla and Civic. The Impreza's key advantage was its standard all-wheel drive, which none of these competitors offered (except the Lancer Evolution, a much higher-performance and more expensive car).

In terms of features, the Impreza was generally on par with its rivals. Reliability-wise, the Corolla and Civic tend to be more reliable than the Impreza, primarily due to the potential head gasket issues. The Mazda3 offered a sportier driving experience than the base Impreza.

For similar alternatives, consider a Mazda3 for sporty handling and good reliability, or a Toyota Corolla for bulletproof reliability and fuel efficiency. If AWD isn't a necessity, these alternatives might be better choices. If AWD is a must and budget is a concern, a used Lancer (non-Evo) could be considered, but research reliability carefully.

Final Verdict: Is the 2007 Subaru Impreza a Good Wagon?

The 2007 Subaru Impreza is ideal for someone needing a reliable and capable car with all-wheel drive, especially in regions with snow or inclement weather. It's worth buying *used*, but only after a thorough inspection by a trusted mechanic, paying close attention to head gasket health and oil consumption. The WRX is appealing for enthusiasts seeking sporty performance, but requires careful maintenance. Avoid buying if maintenance records are absent or if there are signs of neglect. The Outback Sport offers a nice blend of practicality and rugged appeal. Overall, it's a solid choice for a budget-conscious buyer needing AWD, but only with proper diligence.

Toughest little vehicle I know.

This car has been the most reliable, toughest car I've ever owned. It has never let me down. Maintenance is very affordable. Plenty of power for all your lane passing needs and plenty of stopping power even in the most slippery conditions. The AWD system is perfect for washington winters! All electronics still work! I've only had to replace bulbs. Anybody who drives this car will totally love it.

Lots of fun for a very low cost

The sound, the handling, and the joy of driving this 2007 base model Impreza sedan is definitely a diamond in the rough for little cost of entry. Although most know and recognized the wrx and sti models for their performance this model still gives you decent power and similar driving feel along with that symphonic experience exhaust note minus the turbo of course.

Excellent price value and very reliable.

2.5 liter engine with good power. Quick heater output to stay warm. Lots of cargo room in the back. I feel safe in this car, nice solid feel to the ride.

Family Fast

My 07 WRX is the best car I've owned as it combines practicality, comfort, reliability, and performance all in one car. The interior is fairly plain but I'd rather have that than one full of a bunch of luxuries that will only break over time. The manual transmission is definitely a must have. I would recommend this car to everyone who can drive a standard or who wants to learn as it is forgiving to beginners. Only downside is fuel economy goes down fast if you push this car to its limits but the all wheel drive and uphill performance makes it worth that minor sacrifice.
