The 2013 Volkswagen Routan is a minivan resulting from a partnership with Chrysler. Produced from 2009-2014, it aimed to offer a European-influenced alternative in the minivan segment. Key trims included S, SE, SEL, and SEL Premium. Its pricing ranged from approximately $28,000 to $38,000 when new. It stood out for its more upscale interior styling compared to its Chrysler counterparts and VW's attempt to infuse a German driving experience.
The Good

The 2013 Routan offered a comfortable ride and a spacious interior, appealing to practical buyers needing family transport. Its design had a slightly more upscale feel than similar minivans. Performance was adequate for daily driving. Value came from potentially lower used prices compared to competitors. Emotionally, the VW badge may appeal to some despite its Chrysler roots.

The Bad

The 2013 Routan's reliability is a concern due to its Chrysler origins. Watch out for transmission issues, electrical problems, and issues with the power sliding doors. Parts availability and repair costs can be higher than for more popular minivans. Also, check for proper maintenance records and past recalls.

Analysis

What Problems Does the 2013 Volkswagen Routan Have?

The 2013 Volkswagen Routan, being based on the Chrysler minivan platform, shares many of its reliability concerns. Frequently reported problems include transmission issues (rough shifting, failure), electrical problems (power sliding doors, malfunctioning accessories), and water leaks. Recalls have been issued for various safety-related concerns, including airbag deployment and fuel system issues. Long-term reliability is a significant concern; owners should anticipate higher maintenance costs compared to some of its Japanese rivals. Check the vehicle history for completed recall work. The 2013 model year specifically had reports of issues with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), which can cause a multitude of electrical problems. Prior model years (2009-2012) also shared similar issues, so thoroughly inspecting any used Routan is crucial. Consumer Reports often rated the Routan below average in predicted reliability, which reflects these consistent problem areas.

How long will the 2013 Volkswagen Routan last?

A well-maintained 2013 Volkswagen Routan could potentially reach 150,000-200,000 miles or provide 10-12 years of service. However, this is highly dependent on consistent maintenance. Weaknesses over time include increased risk of transmission failure, continuing electrical problems, and suspension wear. Rust can also be an issue, particularly in regions with harsh winters. Regular fluid changes (transmission, coolant, oil) and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial for maximizing longevity. Due to potential reliability concerns, diligent preventative maintenance is vital to extending the Routan's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Volkswagen Routan offered a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included antilock brakes, stability control, and multiple airbags. Higher trims offered features such as a rearview camera, rear parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring. Entertainment options included a standard audio system with a CD player and auxiliary input, with optional upgrades like a premium sound system and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles but included available features like cruise control. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) should be reviewed for specific ratings; results often varied. The optional rear-seat entertainment system included screens integrated into the headrests. The Routan also featured VW's attempt at user-friendly interfaces, though some found them dated compared to newer minivans. Keep in mind technology has moved on so what was good then may seem basic now.

2013 Volkswagen Routan Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Volkswagen Routan ranged from approximately $28,000 to $38,000 depending on the trim level. Current used market prices typically range from $5,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. The Routan has experienced significant depreciation due to its Chrysler-based platform and reliability concerns. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and the demand for minivans in general. The VW badge doesn't necessarily hold the same resale value on this model as it does on other VW vehicles due to its origins.

2013 Volkswagen Routan Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Volkswagen Routan can be costly to own due to potential reliability issues. Insurance costs are likely average for a minivan. Fuel economy is typical for its class. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to the Chrysler platform and potentially less readily available parts compared to more popular minivans. Long-term ownership costs should factor in potential transmission repairs and electrical issues, making it potentially less economical than other options.

2013 Volkswagen Routan Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Volkswagen Routan is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Van with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Volkswagen Routan Compare to Other Van?

The 2013 Volkswagen Routan competes with minivans like the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, Chrysler Town & Country, and Dodge Grand Caravan. In terms of performance, it's comparable to the Chrysler/Dodge models. Features are similar across the class. However, the Routan lags behind the Odyssey and Sienna in reliability. Its price on the used market is often lower than the Honda and Toyota due to its reputation.

Alternatives like the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna are generally considered better choices due to their superior reliability and higher resale value, even though they might cost more upfront. The Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan are similar mechanically, so offer similar pros and cons. If budget is the primary concern, a well-maintained Routan might be considered, but be prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs. The Odyssey and Sienna consistently rank higher in owner satisfaction and long-term dependability. Considering the age of the vehicle, a thorough inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial regardless of the model chosen.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Volkswagen Routan a Good Van?

The 2013 Volkswagen Routan is ideal for budget-conscious buyers who need a minivan and are willing to accept potential reliability risks. It might be worth buying *used* if found at a significantly lower price than more reliable competitors like the Honda Odyssey or Toyota Sienna. Thoroughly inspect any used Routan for signs of transmission problems, electrical issues, and water leaks. A lower trim level might be preferable to avoid complex features that could fail. It's generally not recommended if reliability is a top priority or if the price difference compared to more dependable minivans is minimal. Consider extended warranties if available, but be aware of their limitations.

All you need for family transport, not more

in the base trim, you get a good competent vehicle for a very good price. I needed reliable and comfortable family transportation, and this vehicle fits the bill. Very practical and variable, and comfy enough to run road trips of over 800 miles / day. Handling and drive is alright, considering we're talking about a people carrier here.

Routan is dependable.

Car has been dependable and has met all our needs, including room and technology, especially with five grandchildren, which was the reason for purchasing a 7-passenger vehicle.
