The 2015 Tesla Model S is a groundbreaking electric luxury sedan that helped revolutionize the automotive industry. Its sleek hatchback body style offered practicality without sacrificing aesthetics. Model S production began in 2012. Key trims for 2015 included the 70D, 85D, and P85D. New, it ranged from approximately $70,000 to over $100,000, depending on options. It stood out for its impressive range, performance, and cutting-edge technology.
The Good

The 2015 Tesla Model S offers exhilarating performance with instant torque, making it emotionally appealing. Practically, it boasts exceptional efficiency with zero emissions, a comfortable ride, and a stylish design. While early reliability was a concern, many see long-term value in its technology and low running costs.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2015 Tesla Model S include early build quality issues, expensive battery replacement costs down the line, and reliance on Tesla's proprietary charging network. What Problems Does the 2015 Tesla Model S Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2015 Tesla Model S often revolve around the Media Control Unit (MCU), which controls the central touchscreen. Failure of the MCU can result in loss of navigation, climate control, and other essential functions. Early model years (including 2015) are particularly susceptible to this issue. Suspension components, particularly the upper control arms, have also been reported as problematic, leading to premature wear and potential safety concerns. Door handles, which are motorized, are also a common source of complaints, with failures leading to difficulty opening the doors. Other issues include battery degradation over time (affecting range), and potential problems with the charging system.
Tesla has issued recalls for the Model S, including some related to the seat belts and front suspension. Long-term reliability concerns center around the longevity of the battery pack and the cost of replacement. The air suspension system (if equipped) can also be prone to issues as the vehicle ages. It's crucial to check the vehicle's history for any past recalls or service bulletins, and to have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a qualified mechanic specializing in electric vehicles.

How long will the 2015 Tesla Model S last?

A 2015 Tesla Model S, with proper maintenance, could reasonably be expected to provide 200,000 miles or more of service. Many owners report exceeding this figure. The lifespan is heavily dependent on battery health and usage. Owners who frequently supercharge or deplete the battery to near-zero regularly may experience faster degradation. Long-term durability hinges on proactive maintenance, particularly regarding suspension components, battery cooling systems, and addressing any MCU issues promptly. Weaknesses include potential battery replacement, suspension wear, and electronic component failures over time.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2015 Tesla Model S boasts a cutting-edge tech suite. The centerpiece is the large central touchscreen that controls almost all vehicle functions. Standard features include navigation, internet connectivity, and a premium sound system. Driver-assistance features include Autopilot hardware (though software activation was often optional), which provides adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist.
Safety features include automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and parking sensors. Optional features included enhanced Autopilot with more advanced self-driving capabilities (available via software upgrade) and a premium interior package. The 2015 Tesla Model S received excellent crash-test ratings from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It earned a 5-star overall safety rating from NHTSA. The IIHS gave it a "Good" rating in most crashworthiness categories. The Model S features a reinforced battery pack structure to enhance safety in collisions. The advanced driver-assistance systems, even in their early iterations, contributed to a high level of preventative safety.

2015 Tesla Model S Prices and Market Value

The 2015 Tesla Model S originally ranged from approximately $70,000 to over $100,000 when new, depending on the trim level and options. Used market prices currently range from $25,000 to $45,000, depending on mileage, condition, and battery health. Depreciation has been significant, particularly in the early years. Factors affecting resale value include battery condition, mileage, Autopilot software upgrades, and overall cosmetic and mechanical condition. Cars with lower mileage and upgraded features command higher prices.

2015 Tesla Model S Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2015 Tesla Model S can be higher than average due to its high value and repair costs. "Fuel" costs (electricity) are significantly lower than gasoline. Maintenance is generally less frequent than for gasoline cars, but repairs, especially for battery-related issues, can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs can be moderate to high, depending on the need for battery replacement or major component repairs. The MCU screen failure is another potential costly expense. While electricity is cheap, repairs can negate those savings.

2015 Tesla Model S Insurance

Insurance for a 2015 Tesla Model S is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2015 Tesla Model S Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2015 Tesla Model S competed with luxury sedans like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, and Audi A8. In terms of performance, the Model S, especially the P85D, offered superior acceleration. Its tech features were also more advanced than its rivals at the time. However, its reliability lagged behind established luxury brands. Price-wise, it was comparable to its competitors when new, but used prices are now generally lower.
Alternatives to the 2015 Model S include newer electric vehicles from other manufacturers, such as the Porsche Taycan (higher performance, higher price), Audi e-tron GT (similar performance, better interior quality), or later model year Tesla Model S vehicles with improved reliability. If reliability is a major concern, a used Mercedes-Benz S-Class or BMW 7 Series from the same year might be a more sensible choice, albeit with higher running costs due to gasoline consumption. Ultimately, the best alternative depends on individual priorities: performance, technology, reliability, or budget.

Final Verdict: Is the 2015 Tesla Model S a Good Sedan?

The 2015 Tesla Model S is ideal for tech-savvy buyers who prioritize performance and electric vehicle ownership. It's worth buying used if you're comfortable with potential maintenance costs and battery degradation. It's best to consider models with lower mileage and a well-documented service history. A pre-purchase inspection is essential. Consider later model years or trims with enhanced reliability if budget allows. While not perfect, it remains a compelling choice for those seeking a used electric luxury sedan, understanding potential risks.

Overall different in a very good way.

Great car with the versatility you need for daily commuting. Purchased used, and wouldn’t hesitate to do it again. Over the air updates, and a database of maintenance history makes choosing the right one easy.

Amazing piece of technology

the model s 85D has been a great car, few issues other than it eats tires a bit more quickly due to its 6000lb weight an the instant 400+ ftlbs of torque it delivers. Car is very fast and a joy to drive. once you get used to the charging and constraints of EV ownership you'll probably not want to go back to a gas car.
